Hey John. Many believe that artistic innovation stems from artists capitalising on technological innovations - technologists build something and artists abuse it to make... amazing art. This happened in the 80s when synthesisers became available at a consumer friendly price point. Sophie is another example of an artist that capitalised on the innovations of elektron to push the boundaries of pop and electronic music. By this logic, in a decades time we will look back on an artist of today that is doing this exact thing, with today's tools, and say that they are 'ahead of their time'. Do you believe that there are any synthesisers that match the capabilities of the monomachine? It seems to me that many companies are focusing on the reissuing of analog gear, leaning into nostalgia, and not pushing for innovation. Thoughts appreciated!

Not stupid at all omg, but nah this wasn’t based off any prior song. Most of my jams with the exception of the first one are all original compositions made after fucking around on the Mono after 15-30m, not including the time it takes to splice/edit tracks in Ableton in the later jams.

Nice programming of the monomachine. I bought mine back when Elektron put them on sale to promote the Octa... about 8 or 10 years or something. Tbh I never really persisted with it. Unlike the MD, which quickly won my affection, I never quite got into the MM. Part of the problem is that I purchased an Octa around the same time. This unit has a problem with its headphone jack and it got lost in repair at Elektron for nine months, only to be returned to me without repair. So, although my MM works just fine, the wind got knocked out of my sails pretty considerably and the opportunity to connect with the device has seemingly not yet returned. However, it's always been a device that I've held as highly capable so thanks for the demonstration. I should give it another look. ...Genuinely a little surprised to hear that it's apparently in high demand from synth enthusiasts. I didn't think the price would be heading anywhere but up but I'm surprised to see it hitting such prices already. I suppose it might suggest something about the level of prestige that the Elektron brand now holds. That's not to suggest that it's not a cool device but it seems to be selling for the kind of money that could be used to buy a couple, or a few, similarly cool devices.

I've made two 😭 I definitely have to make more though that's for sure! My problem is that I'm still learning how to use the Mono and just learn general synthesis too. In the tutorials I have to explain the user experience on the Monomachine while also explaining aspects of synthesis so that someone without the Mono could apply it to their synth, and as a beginner in both areas it's pretty difficult lol

Oh I have no doubt in my mind that she did real-time tweaks to the actual structure of any given track, beyond sound design. She was an incredibly gifted composer so I would not be surprised if much of the actual arranging of her songs was done live! I can’t say whether I think my way of entirely sequenced PC Music beats is cooler haha, I just take comfort in this genre’s ability to be interpreted by just about anyone with a synthesizer, regardless of skill level :)

I have one I barely use and I’m considering selling it, and there’s no way I would charge people the prices they’ve gotten up to. It’s criminal. The Digitone has taken up all of my time and sadly the mono just sits :/
@JohnLozo3 жыл бұрын
I'm heavily considering a Digitone purchase in the future! Really wanna see what I can do with the "limitations" it has considering there are many features of the Mono that I just don't ever use (.WAV sampling, much of the engines besides the FM and drum ones, etc.). I also think the small form factor of the Digitone might be fun considering the Monomachine necessitates two-handed use. Sad to hear you're not getting that much use out of this thing, but I'm sure you made some really excellent stuff with it! :)

I would 100% be willing to buy it if you do end up deciding to sell it! Ive been constantly searching for a somewhat affordable MNM ever since I found out that SOPHIE used it to sculpt her sounds, but the $2.5k+ prices make it super difficult to justify lol. Ive been wondering if I should just buy a machinedrum, as its the flip side of elektrons flagships, but a lot of the demos Ive heard(especially Johns) push me closer towards the monomachine.
@maxoreilly3 жыл бұрын
@@justinwav3424 love the mono, and love SOPHIE. That being said, there’s definitely cheaper options to get those kinds of sounds, especially if you’re open to VSTs. Feel bad that people are paying so much now to get those sounds. I got it originally because of Avey Tare’s album Down There, one of my favorite “sound design” heavy albums. I’m really on the fence about selling or not, haven’t had room for a full set up in a while so that’s why it’s packed away.
@maxoreilly3 жыл бұрын
@@JohnLozo I think you might really like it! The only limitation I really notice or hit often is the 8 voice polyphony, which is usually when I’m trying to do drums on the ‘tone too. Have considered getting the Digitakt to solve this but Ableton is such a good sampler, among many other things, that I have a hard time justifying it! Would be so awesome if they added some MnM features to the Digitone, or some other flagship frankenstein box that was a combination of both. I did make some cool stuff with the Mono but I rarely actually tracked it. There was one time early on where I was ignorantly messing about in the settings and formatted all of my patterns/kits and that was a real bad day lol. The newer boxes has some really nice safeguards for that and obviously Overbridge is so convenient. The whole DAWless thing is very romantic to me but if I really wanna get some real composition work done, I know I’m gonna have to reach for that mouse and keyboard and just do it. Huge respect for anyone who can create start to finish with hardware sequencers, that’s a real talent.
