Sorry there haven't been jams this past week everyone, just have been getting more familiar with this thing after many of you incredible producers gave me some very helpful tips!

Oh I have no doubt in my mind that she did real-time tweaks to the actual structure of any given track, beyond sound design. She was an incredibly gifted composer so I would not be surprised if much of the actual arranging of her songs was done live! I can’t say whether I think my way of entirely sequenced PC Music beats is cooler haha, I just take comfort in this genre’s ability to be interpreted by just about anyone with a synthesizer, regardless of skill level :)

dude thank you so much these videos are a game changer. couldn’t imagine wrapping my head around this beast but it’s a dream come true to see a little bit into how SOPHIE might of got some of her unbelievable samples. i’ve genuinely been looking for a video on making sounds like this on _any_ synth for literal years now, to finally see it on an original monomachine of all things is too good. thank you!

@@JohnLozo you're really doing amazing with it and you get better in every video! it's so fascinating and it makes me so happy to finally get a good look at this synth and this sound design process that has captivated me for so many years. so glad i came across your videos, it seriously puts a smile on my face every time i see a new upload :]

I say I suck at making music practically everyday and this channel has just absolutely exceeded any of my expectations of "popularity". The self deprecation runs deep with much of my inner monologue, but you just gotta push through it and post stuff and *some* amount of people will care! Then what matters is the content you put out after and interacting with those who genuinely care about what you're doing and learning from what they're saying, slowly but surely you gain confidence through that :) All this being said, MAKE MUSIC ! ! ! POST VIDS ! PEOPLE WILL CARE !

Of course! The arp is absolutely insane on this thing.. once I started using it more as a tool for sound design than crafting melodies, EVERY engine on this thing just opens up

first of all, LOVE these vids!! for someone who’s getting into fm synthesis and sound design because of the likes of ag cook and SOPHIE, they’re really helpful :) just wondering how much you got your monomachine for? after SOPHIE passed away it seems they’ve been skyrocketing in price, if you know anywhere that sells em for cheap lmk!!

Thank you so much for the kind words! FM synthesis is so eclectic, while the monomachine is certainly a fascinating instrument in terms of sound, I’ve succeeded in making PC-like tones with VSTs like Fruity DX10, an FM synth plug-in that comes pre installed on FL Studio. Don’t break the bank should these prices sadly keep going up, software is better than paying up the ass! I payed 2k on my Mono after the seller (on eBay) sent me an offer $200 off their $2200 listing. As of right now I think eBay is the better place to find monomachines, purely based off the trends on Reverb, I love that site but if there’s any advice I can give you on where to buy a Mono, it’s “don’t buy it from Reverb”! And hey, maybe Elektron will idk check out the interest of recent monomachine vids (and its famous users) and reissue it ;)

Hey John. Many believe that artistic innovation stems from artists capitalising on technological innovations - technologists build something and artists abuse it to make... amazing art. This happened in the 80s when synthesisers became available at a consumer friendly price point. Sophie is another example of an artist that capitalised on the innovations of elektron to push the boundaries of pop and electronic music. By this logic, in a decades time we will look back on an artist of today that is doing this exact thing, with today's tools, and say that they are 'ahead of their time'. Do you believe that there are any synthesisers that match the capabilities of the monomachine? It seems to me that many companies are focusing on the reissuing of analog gear, leaning into nostalgia, and not pushing for innovation. Thoughts appreciated!

John, you're giving away too many secrets, lol. If you set FB and LP to like 120-6 you can control that unwanted feedback. Also for clang and also DEP and DEL between 40-60 range sounds good. Use x6 or x12 on the arp for normal speed tracks. You can also choose a note for each arp step by holding down the step and hitting the up and down keys. If anyone's trying to sound like SOPHIE as easy as possible, load a FM-PAR set the FREQs to 4 and go max on the envelopes, play a pattern at 160 then play with env1-3 in the 85-127 zone, you get UNISIL etc vibes. If you recently got a monomachine and are frustrated, you will be. Honestly take your time and get acquainted with it, it's really its own thing. The joy really comes from experimentation with it not emulation, which I kind of pointless because you really can't safely save anything on it even with the +drive. Sometimes Patterns and Kits just up and change by themselves outside key tracking setting.

I KNOWWW LMAO I've just discovered so much about this thing in so few months, I had to share! The arpeggiator is just insane! And yeah I know I can get rid of the crazy feedback on the chorus, when making the original patch a few jams ago I turned that up all the way to exaggerate the chorus sound- in those jams it helped the clanginess effect, in this jam not so much haha. Also thank you so so much for the tips! They are no doubt going to be invaluable to my understanding of this incredible instrument.

It IS a headache to learn (as are most things) I got this back in mid October and only just started to feel confident enough to post vids about it! But if you’re dedicated enough and have some experience with synthesis and its language, you should get by pretty fine :)

So this is how these complex beats are done, it’s all arpeggiated lol

This comment has been keeping me away from the arp recently haha!! Been trying new ways to get complex beats without resorting to how chaotic the arp can get and it’s giving me some interesting results! My most recent jam doesn’t use it whatsoever and I think I have you to thank for that creative push!

I can’t speak for the uploaded but the Elektron manuals are incredible. I own a Mono, Machinedrum, Analog Rytm, Analog Keys, and Octatrack and all of their manuals were really thorough but easy to understand.

the monomachine is more expensive that I was expecting,, not gonna get it anytime soon unfortunately 😿

Especially with these resellers marking up prices it’s the worst time to be thinking of buying one rn, however the Model:Cycles is $299 and is such a steal for how much it can do! I suggest looking into that device if you’re looking to make SOPHIE-like jams on a budget :)
