/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Ok so Monkey Man is now out and Dev Patels action packed film packs a punch that that's made it one of my favourite films of the year so far.
Throughout this video we're gonna talk about it's deeper meaning and also what we thought about the movie. If this is your first time here then welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul. This is the channel where we go bananas and breakdown all the big movie releases. Obviously it's heavy spoilers ahead and if you enjoy it please hit the thumbs up. Dont forget to subscribe if you enjoy the video and we'd of course love to hear your thoughts on it in the comments.
With that out the way, thank you for clicking this, now let's get into Monkey Man.
-
Now the film itself opens with the story of Hanuman and we get a crash course on the legend. I'm not too familiar with the Hindu deity but obviously the figures iconic and has influenced a lot of myths and stories. In the beginning we learn Hanuman was looking at the trees which is when he spotted a juicy shiny mango. Reaching for this he realised it was the Sun and the other Gods punished him.
This ties heavily into the film and it's here that we're also introduced to Kid. Now in the film he takes on several different monikers including Bobby which is the name I'm gonna use for the video. Turned out that when he was younger his home was raided by a corrupt police force in order to strip the people of their land. This was under the guidance of Baba Shakti who's a religious figure that's been attempting to gain power in the country. Using his followers and the police as a weapon he's stripped the land from people and has ruined India's infrastructure. Now he's in bed with the politicians as they head towards a landslide victory on the night of Diwali.

Yes! A lot of people weren’t happy with the close ups and shaky cam but it was all used very well and strategic. It showed the claustrophobic, trapped nature of an animal backed into a corner and the need to become violent and brutal to fight your way out no matter what!💪🏿💪🏿
Love the symbolism when he bleaches the monkey mask white. It was foreshadowing of that the darkness all around (corruption and violence) was about to be extinguished by the light.
The movie shows how religious figures and other leaders who are part of the system does not respect god(using the sandals of nonviolence as a weapon)but uses god as weapon against people(like to build factory with slave labor which he says is commune with volunteers etc) In ramayana ram destroyed evil on Diwali with the help of hanuman, in this story dev patel is hanuman helping us(asking us) to fight against the corrupt system making us ram who fights against rhe system

The reason this film was not released by Netflix is due to the political environment in India at the moment. The film is critical of right wing government mistreating marginalized people, and the government in India is taking aggressive measures against government criticism, including threatening to raid and jail the executives of companies that release any media that is critical of the government. Netflix was afraid the film would compromise their relationship with the Indian government and put them at risk, so they were willing to let it go. Additionally, one of the producers on the film filed bankruptcy, which left it with no financial support for release. Jordan Peele saw the movie and thought it deserved a full release and wanted to support, which is why Monkeypaw stepped and has so heavily promoted the film with Peele's name as executive producer.

completely incorrect Modi the leader of the "right wing" Indian govt has the highest support among all the leaders of the world by their own people. This means upto 80% of Indians support Modi and the "right wing' govt. This is available as a survey report at the Morning Consult website a western polling firm. The farmer protests were driven by Money derived from a terror group the Khalistanis who are based in canada and want to break India and create their own separate state. Whatever the agenda these guys want peddled, Indian govt and people are having none of it. Indians run India they see fit. Also the amount of political polarization is one the least in India where modi, and his "right wing" govt is expected to win a third term at the greatest landslide election victory possible. Compare this to your own countries, the near civil war USA and the completely broken UK. Dont take my word for it, see " 2023 Edelman Trust Barometer ". So before you peddle your half informed knowledge about the rest of the world .. first understand that you now absolutely nothing while there are people living happy in places you want to judge as backward, happier than you

The tabla (hand drums) player is musician Zakir Hussain. He has played as part of many bands, notably Shakti, and performances and when he does he's playing very fast for a LONG time. It was pretty funny to see him get tired out during the call and response training he did with the MC. I was delighted to see him get a few scenes to just show off!
I watched it this evening. I love all genres, but action/thrillers are my favorite. I gave this movie a 10 - its stunning and it's the first movie ever (to include The Raid: Redemption - which is a favorite) - that I wanted to immediately rewatch. I'm excited for others to see it. Beautifully shot, the action is just like - whoa - and there is a really cool element that I won't give away in terms of how characters are used as he moves beyond his original core motivations to keep them a priority while also expanding. SO GOOD.
I got a sneak peek two days ago and the action is tight. Dev did good fights, and the emotional scenes with his pain came across well. Hope he gets to continue growing as a director.
Not related to the video but just want to show appreciate to the channel. I appreciate that instead of milking other trending topics, you guys do other shows instead. Keep up the great work, Paul and Team.

@cashwin45
Ай бұрын
@@MegInWhispers This theory is such a stretch because it's nowhere implied that officer Singh knew any of the people in the main character's village before he was sent to get them out forcefully. He's just a goon of the Baba Shakti, and only went to the village in the first place because of him. First he visited along with the other officers to ask the people to get off the land, showing the papers, and then when the people refused they returned with weapons and burned the village down, and that's when he assaulted her because he's just a despicable human being. There really is nothing more to it than that and it's never implied otherwise so I don't know why you created this theory lol especially when the main character says Singh didn't even know his mother's name. I don't think he targeted her specifically when he first attempted to a$$ault her and then killed her, he just is a power-hungry horrible human who likes seeing defenseless women in pain.
Honestly, I really liked the first half. The world of the underclass in India and Dev playing the opportunistic jobber who pushes forward with his plan no matter how underprepared he really is. But then they include magic to explain the massive 180 in ability and it kinda falls flat for me. I do like the implication that he's always been a great fighter, but he's more focussed on penance through self-mutilation than actually embracing his full strength. I feel like they could have hinted at that more and left the magic stuff out.

Yooooo I was thinking his martial arts prowess and the way the myths described hanuman really makes me happy that this is my modern day live action monkey king
I loved this film just seen it today I loved the themes the story telling the character development over the course of the film and when the action happens it’s so intense and the theme of emotional pain and childhood which I felt every emotion this character went through the film is relentless so people say it’s slow beginning but I loved the the backstory slowly revealing the high elites and the mythology I loved this film for me is a 10/10 it’s a masterpiece deeply emotional revenge story and I loved the INDAN CULTURE ❤a MASTERPIECE
this film touched on a lot of things going on in India: political struggles, using religion as a tool of manipulation, gender inequality and the mistreatment, police corruption etc. Such a heavy movie. The way the movie was shot, camera work really brings out the chaos and unpredictability of the situation there :") Kudos to Jordan for being daring enough to produce this masterpiece (on a topic which he probably knew little to nothing about but able to see the importance and symbolism), for allowing its theatrical release to share this with the world.

Beautifully filmed, well acted, tight, tense and action packed. Monkey Man delivers on every level.
It definitely takes inspiration from John Wick, but I also feel like some Slumdog Millionaire made its way into the film. Seeing the real corruption going on in India making a spot in the film just made it feel so real and applicable, and that religion is used to further corruption. Ive seen people trash this movie, but I'm so glad it's getting love. Definitely getting it when it comes out in physical

Just watched it today in the UK. Loved it. Quality!
Excellent review.
Best movie I’ve ever seen! I’ve never experienced that many emotional swings, in a 2 hour span. So much symbolism. Rings heavy with today’s landscape. IMO, better than John Wick. Which one? All of them!
I will say the baba shakti's reference to "cycles of violence" isn't meant to be a legitimate critique of Bobby or the movement in his wake, they are pointing out that the state (which has a monopoly on violence) will often weaponize people's desire for peace and compassion even if the state themselves are the perpetrators of violence, and it has often been tied up with religion as well. One of the most prevalent instances of weaponizing nonviolence is how states will often co-opt the activism of radical nonviolent figures they hated but only after they are killed, one of the most famous instances of this is Ghandi who happened to be a big inspiration for MLK and the same thing happened to him as well. An interesting through line with them is that they were also Christian, Ghandi was raised Hindu and he didn't reject Hinduism but he did embrace Christianity, and earlier in the movie we see at one of the ring fights that there is an open hostility to Christianity. It's worth noting that Christianity has existed in India for a long ass time but it's relationship with India hasn't been the same the entire time, specifically the relatively recent memory and remnants of British imperialism and fascism. Additionally India's far right politics also have a frighteningly strong connection to the actual N*zis, because the N*zis also co-opted Vedic culture including Hinduism, during WW2 because India was still part of the British Empire a lot of conflict took place over there between the British and the N*zis. But the N*zis didn't just fight over there they proselytized their interpretation of Hinduism, created propaganda for Indians, and created Indian militias that fought for them. After WW2 ended the people in these Indian N*zi Militias didn't just go away, and the propaganda didn't just stop. So we see in the movie not just a material conflict but also one of religious interpretation, we see from Bobby's perspective that his relationship with Hinduism is heavily tied to hope nature and his relationship with his mother, but the Baba Shakti views Hinduism as a vehicle for controlling and repressing those he views as less than human. And then we also meet the people from the church who also practice Hinduism but unlike the baba shakti they do not pathologically advocate for nonviolence and they have a different understanding of gender from him The movie is also about how Fascism and Capitalism are fundamentally aligned with each other, showing how the wealthy population's excessive and exploitative lifestyle is protected and assisted by the fascism of the state
I can't wait to watch this over the weekend.
I think I saw an Easter egg for Slumdog Millionaire with the kids asleep on the street
Thank you Paul.
Hanuman was never punsihed by gods. When hanuman was little he wanted to reach sun but was interupted by Lord Indra who hit him with his hammer. Hanuman fell down on earth where Lord Pawan(Wind god and lord hanuman was born because of his blessing) was angry with indra. so Lord Brahma revived Hanuman and gave him Powers. (Additional Info: Indra and Pawan are not gods as in what the term applies , they are devtas the one who gives without asking for anything in return . The True God is Formless Brahman and his 3 forms Brahma(Creator) , Vishnu (Protector) and Shiva(Destroyer) )

Just watched it. Fun stuff. Great first film. Pacing is a lil off. It’s not perfect but a solid watch imo.
The story is simple (which I like), and the acting and presentation are well-done (which I also like). This movie as a whole is a vibe, man. Glad it's out there. But there are, in my opinion, a couple of tiny loose ends to the story.First, in act 1 Bobby peeked at Queenie opening her safe; I honestly thought he was going to do something about that later. Also, I'm a bit confused about Alphonso. Bobby did him dirty, three times. (first Bobby manipulated Alphonso to get close to Rana. Then Bobby stole and wrecked Alphonso's bajaj, and third he accidentally made Alphonso his accomplice and then abandons him for the rest of the film, causing Alphonso to live like a rat). Relatively-speaking, Alphonso is innocent and Bobby ruined his life. He should be furious.

I was dissapointed by the movie. Yes the action is well done but the story is incoherent and feels too random in some places. The revenge plot is OK but when it gets to the fight with Rana he hesitates and loses the fight while he is a free fighter.. after that he just shoots 3 polices officers. After that he magically survives being shot and falling in an Indian urban river aka sewer. And in the end its al connected to this guy we only knew from TV. I missed build up of the characters and the characters that were well developt just dissapeared, like Alphonso and Sita.
The only reason i took interest in the movie is cus i saw a meme saying that transgenders give you super powers
What’s crazy is I made that comment that this looks like an Indian John Wick on Facebook today. It blows my mind to hear you say that.
Patel is the bomba
Here's my cross over wish list- If you know the Mahabharat: Monkey Man: Hanuman John Wick: Ram FYI: The tabla maestro: Ustad Zakir Hussain;
Trailers made it seem like it was gonna be a action packed movie. Idk i was expecting hohn wick style fights and by that i mean a lot. They could've easily done him failing the kill the general at the beginning then having the city try to kill him having those fights and then him going to the end and fighting. Idk it was way more "filler" then i expected

So your advice is basically to copy JW 4? Really? No wonder we end up with so many generic, terrible films. Monkey Man is great just as it is.

That does happen tho, he's running from the cops and gets in a bunch of fights as he does

This is feeling like a paid promotion to me for some reason… Paul seems a little by the book on this review
