Momentum in Sonic Utopia

Ойындар

Most satisfying game I've ever played!
This was just a random run I did of the demo, and I hope it motivates you to start up Sonic Utopia and play around with its amazing physics.

"Sonic Utopia is a fan made game which imagines Sonic in an open world setting. As the video demonstrates, it's more high-speed parkour than platformer, coming across like a meeting between SSX and Yooka Laylee. According to its creator Mr Lange, Utopia is "an experiment that not only tries to expand on Sonic gameplay in an intuitive way in 3D, but also aims to capture the best of Sonic's style and tie it together in a cohesive experience. Nearly everything in this demo, from art to sound to the gameplay engine, was made from scratch."

@@21kHzBANK21kHZ sure it's empty. But look at the movement? You can't look at that and think that doesn't look fun to screw around with for a couple of hours!? The whole point of sonic is momentum, the better you learn a level the faster you go. Speed is the reward for being competent with the game. As you can see in this tech demo. Frontiers looks painfully slow and there are no momentum mechanics at all. However I agree that the movement is only part of the whole that makes a good game. Frontiers definitely needs more to do and to make moving as Sonic fun

@@Razorstolemycar From the current gameplay, Sonic Frontiers looks stiff just like Forces and a lot of other 3D Sonic games. I’m not sure why Sonic Team refuses to do momentum-based physics and more free-flowing movement like Sonic Utopia does. Sonic Utopia has no budget and they’ve got it right. It made sense in the late 90s and 2000s, making stages super linear due to hardware limitations, but they have such a big opportunity here now. IMO, I get this unshakable feeling that Sonic Frontiers is looking to fall short when watching Sonic Utopia vids. Utopia art style and at least *some* of its momentum-based physics + control would have been better.

This game kind of does that. I think the only issue with this demo is that the various obstacles are placed haphazardly. As I played, I could make a mistake, fall, and think, "Ha ha! My mistake. Wow, this is fun!" But after a while I started looking around, wondering how the heck to get anywhere. I saw this one spiraling strip of land that I never could manage to get to. It's not just that it's fairly large, but that there is _no_ sense of a path at all. If this were made into a proper game, I think that this needs to be addressed. It doesn't need to be an obvious race course, but some level of direction would be better. You shouldn't need to replay a level 10 times before you have any sense of direction in it.

With the exception of a few minor surprises that are decent like Sonic Colors and Generations, Sonics current direction is awful. Secondly, Mario odyssey wasn’t entirely original in itself, Nintendo has already done games like that. Third, A hat in time is considered to be a “Mario Odyssey-Clone” but it’s not hated for it. Plus a Sonic Odyssey style game would definitely have Sonics personality. Like I said, give him huge open worlds to run around and explore in. Honestly Sega should be paying the guys making Sonic Utopia because they understand Sonic more than Sonic Team which is hilarious. First Sonic Mania and now this.
