Honestly open world would be a great style for sonic, *if done right* . You can't just put in a bland world with nothing to do. Then the player has no incentive to explore, and it becomes boring. Alternatively, you can't overwhelm the player with so much that they don't know where to start. In my opinion, an open world Sonic game needs 4 fundamental parts. 1) The world needs to be big. If the player doesn't have enough space to run around in, then it becomes boring. There needs to be varied platforming and terrain, hazards, enemies, etc, to keep the player's interest. 2) Levels need to have reasons to explore them. Things like collectibles and cosmetics, chaos emeralds so you can turn super, or improvings your characters ablities via some sort of progression system (leveling up, skill tree, changing attributes, etc.) 3) The levels need to look good. They should compliment Sonic's speed and distinct visuals. I want to see environments and graphics on par with Sonic Unleashed. 4) There needs to be some system to help keep the player oriented. This could come in the form of a mini-map, compass, or radar. If the players has no idea where they are going, then playing becomes tedious. These are all my opinions, and feel free to yell at why open-world wouldn't be good for Sonic. But all of these things make me both excited, and nervous for Sonic Rangers. Edit: Welp, they got some of it right.

Open World in a sonic game. Why not, I miss this possibility since Sonic 06 and Sonic Unleashed

I love the momentum-based 3D Sonic fan games like Utopia. The movement is so addicting! I really hope Sega makes a game with that kind of physics some day.

I think the closet we might have to sonic rangers is the open world bumper engine test. Hopefully they find a way to keep it interesting

Utopia isn’t an empty landscape and has actual design and secrets spread around, but yeah things like the Icecap world thing cannot compare

This is my opinion, so I get it if some disagree- I feel like the "Mach State" would be the perfect solution to the boost vs adventure formula. Classic sonic games were all about building your momentum to go as fast as possible, but with the most recent sonic games, that's no longer something you have to fight for, with the click of a button. This gimmick would allow for smaller, tighter platforming whilst still having the potential for very fast segments. In my opinion, it is a genius idea on the dev's part. Take the indie game defunct, for example. That game was all about building your momentum to reach certain areas, and it was a blast! The spin dash would have a role again, too. Idk, I'm just suddenly in love with the concept.

I think that this might be the best way to make a sonic open world gam work. Have you build up momentum to a mach state. That you can control your movements easily while exploring and if you want to speed it up you need to be skilled. If its high speed all the time then that would make it difficult to control without a preset course. It seems that frontiers is keeping boost gameplay which has me concerned,

After seeing the trailer for Frontiers, I can say that these games look a lot better. Mainly on the gameplay part, these look so much more fluid.

The problem with many open world sonic games and fan games in general (as well as sega official games) Is level design You end up having this big open field or level With slopes and loops And maybe random objects and enemies And that's it You created your goal A open world But what's inside doesn't offer anything That can hold the game long enough After you've homing attacked 1 shot every enemy Ran on all types of slopes and jumps Maybe touched a power box or went under water After a day or even a couple of hours You've done everything exciting That you could do in a area Now multiple that one small area until its the entire open world And you've essential created empty space or filler If you do a open world game And a sonic game You need progression Things need to be mixed up in a way that provide players incentive to play the game past 3 days

Exactly my thoughts. You'd need to shift the sonic formula alot. It would be interesting as someone not too invested with sonic and am someone who's only ever played unleashed. I think sonic could benefit from trying something like Mario Odyssey in the sense that they have levels within Mini worlds but involve fights, races, and other forms of progression based around each world or location. One big reason I'm not too into sonic is that it doesn't feel very engaging from a game standpoint (in my opinion this is a me problem rather than the games themselves) It would be interesting to see some big changes in what makes a sonic game a sonic game.

in sonic 06 it was a pain and i never finished it from that time.

These are nice and all, but I hope Sonic Rangers adds more RPG elements. Love those in games-- even Sonic. More NPCs to interact with and some actual villages/towns/cities. I also hope they go back to making rings usable currency in shops. Day and night cycles in the open world as well as maybe making day of the week sensitive features would be fantastic. I was kinda joking when I said it before, but a Big fishing feature could possibly make more sense in this type of game lol. So not just enemies, typical pickups and the EXP + skill tree only.

You should definitely check out Unleashed then; it has hub worlds and NPCs! ^^ Rings are currency, and of course, night and day gimmick. But if it ain't your cup o' tea, that's okay. ^^'

Honestly, you could take these demos as concepts for movement, the exploration aspect of BoTW, and I also think the objective structure of say Just Cause 3 could fit well. Going around destroying Eggman's fortresses, with say mini bosses inside.

It's so immersive it makes you actually FEEL like you're Sonic!

The Open World Test Bumper Engine feels so... melancholic. The way he ran around towards the hill reminded me of Sonic X for some reason. Same thing with the second half of the Icecap World. You know how some people say Sonic runs so much, it feels like he's running away from something? This kinda feels like that.

Sonic utopia is my favorite of the open world fan games 1. Good sound effects 2. Amazing and nostalgic music and map 3. Vibrant colors 4. Lots of everything 5. The super peel-out is back 6. Immense speed

Sonic Utopia feels like an alternate universe where the 3D games were made as an accurate and true spiritual successor to the 2D games. Everything about it felt bright, happy, and nostalgic.

In my opinion, Sonic Utopia is the best kind of Open-World style of Sonic. It's a level, and there's a beginning and an end, but the way you travel from the beginning to the end is through an enormous world with tons of twists and turns and alternate pathways. I would definitely like to see this in a boost game :D

Sonic Utopia and Green Hill Paradise are probably the best open world fan games. Everything from the style to the physics and controls just feels absolutely perfect for controlling Sonic in a 3D space

Greenhill Paradise's Mach Speed Mechanic is a unique take that embodies "speed as reward" philosophy. Sonic Utopia feels like what Sonic's jump to 3D should have been: a natural extension of the aesthetic and design of the base line platformer the way Mario 64 did for its respective franchise. The other 2 have...I guess stuff?
