There's so much potential for this- it just looks fun in a way the old school games were- but in 3D. The feeling of Sonic being pinballed around, using momemtum to gain speed. A lick of graphical paint and some tighter level design and I'd throw money at it.

What’s crazy is this build is from like 2016. They haven’t released anything other than this build. The devs are still hard at work at this game, from the update videos it’s looking so much different, in a good way. They rebuilt the engine from the ground up and have added several new zones. The model of Sonic is looking more like Saturn/Jam-era, which is a very good fit imo. They were hoping to release last year but they needed more time.

Yeah, the creator said The full game would be out by 2020 and that It would have another demo with more zones and bosses before then, but since the dev team has gotten much bigger since then, they scrapped a lot of things to redo it and make it even better. We might have to wait, but considering the fact that this is just a last minute tech demo, there will be a LOT more in store.

One has care and heart put into it and was made by a very small team for a small tech demo. It is greatly detailed and has hidden easter eggs to explore that call back to other levels despite that. You could spend hours just running around. The other is literally just a fresh coat of paint on the same level every new sonic game that you try your hardest to blast through to see what else there is in the game. What matters here isnt presentation in this case. Instead its execution. Which was done better here than most sonic games. If sega made green hill zone half as fun or interesting as this nowadays, people wouldnt complain nearly as much as they do now. At least thats how I feel about it.

Edit: This is all directed towards Murasaki Fox. If you're reading this, thank you :) I'm dead serious when I say this: This is a fangame that only has one level, but it's still the best 3D sonic experience I have had since Generations. If you could get in contact with SEGA and convince them to buy your idea and hire you, Sonic Utopia could become the next sucessful 3D Sonic Game. It has so much potential it's insane. The controls are amazing and when mastered you feel like a total badass. The sound effects and music is stellar and the pitch of sonic running changing the faster he runs is super satisfying. If this game got levels designed a bit more complex to fit the gameplay style, got a small story to fit into the game and all those things a official licensed game got, I bet my damm butt that Sonic Utopia would end up being a praised and famous 3D Sonic game fans would love for decades. Even with just one level and only one goal, this game is still a joy to come back to and addore just how much potential Sonic Games can have. You have my full respect for this masterpiece you have created :)

These are easily the best movement mechanics in any 3D sonic game. Actual rolling physics. That's the entire reason Sonic exists. He can roll into a ball. I don't care if you change everything else; music, graphics etc. These movement mechanics are essential for a Sonic game IMO.

to be fair i think green hills is just a proof of concept level. Also the multiple routes through a sonic level is a big part of the classic games, which this one obviously takes heavy inspiration from. To make the levels linear would ruin the freedom and vibe in my opinion.

@@eegernades Now, what would actually be a pretty cool idea for sonic would be a sandbox like this where you have tons of stuff to find and seamlessly enter levels, sort of like here, where you enter a cave that is sort of like Labyrinth Zone...only you have to find it, maybe accomplish some goals to reach it, and then just...enter and progress onto other stages or overworld. Adventure kinda did it, but the areas feel more like hub worlds where you just find a couple things to access levels (Not really holding it against the game, which was very innovative for the time). The same idea applied to a HUGE, fully explorable world like this, with rings and enemies and stuff to find (And, most importantly, FREEDOM to run around like this) would really be an amazing thing to see.

@@TitoTheOG If I remember right, the project got canceled. The developer is the same guy who did the demo for "Sonic Overture", another canceled project. He's amazingly good at making these things, but he's a huge perfectionist and wasn't happy with the engine, so he scrapped the entire thing. The thing is, from watching these videos, literally the only thing that I can see that's even slightly off is that some textures for ramps and things don't line up properly with the walls they're attached to, but considering this is a fan-project and not a for-profit commercial game where the developers are paid to perfect every little thing, that's more than understandable. Honestly, it's projects like this that make me wish that the developer would release at least some sort of code for other people who want to use it. Hell, even just the level resources would be nice. It's all custom-made hand-placed terrain rather than distorting the hell out of a large single-texture plane to make "mountains". It's probably the most beautiful-looking open-world Sonic fangame there is, let alone one with near-flawless physics and animation.

  • @Densester

@Daniel Benavidez imo no, the reason Utopia is lame is because it feels floaty and lacks the more in depth moves the other engines have. Not to mention, the level showcased is lame too, it's open but not really that interesting. It's not like Spark 2 where you have a very interesting main level layout, and then you can jump INTO the background for more interesting goodies and speedrunning techniques, it's just kinda open to compensate for the fact Sonic takes a billion years to fall to the ground and because it's not as fast as the newer engines. It doesn't have more potential than Project Hero, that engine already feels like a fully fledged game in terms of mechanics and controls, and Spark 2 IS a fully fledged game, you can buy it right now if you want.

What would be cool is if the game wasn't in stages per se, but if it was one large ass world as one stage and as you go you cross over into other zones. No loading screens, no end to the zones until the VERY end, etc. Just one big world with a semi-linear path that leads all the way to Eggman's base. Buuut whatever the creators have in mind, im sure we'll love it either way 😂

Agreed. An open world (or something like that) Sonic game is an unexplored avenue as far as I know, and it certainly fits. Traversing huge distances at tremendous speed and exploring the world is definitely something I feel fits the Sonic aesthetic. In a hypothetical full-budget Sonic Team version, it could even involve you running into various other characters, or encountering various cities and towns under attack by Eggman as you make your way to the big man's fortress.

Okay, real talk, this is how 3D sonic should be, at least from a gameplay perspective. With the older 2D games, there were branching paths and huge maps with loads of little secrets and crevices. In my opinion, this is the perfect 3D equivalent to that. Sega tends to make far more linear levels nowadays, with only one defined path to the end, and only small diversions with stuff like red rings or medals. This game showcases how 3D sonic should play, with vast areas and branching paths both on a horizontal and vertical level, and you’re still able to feel like a speedster without making the stage feel minuscule. You can take any path you want, and it always feels like the right way to go. This is how you do stage design for a 3D Sonic game.

Unbelievable. The controls and camera look so perfect for a 3D Sonic. Incredible work from the creators here. With some level polish with a goal and boss and all of that, but the same level of freedom (i.e. no forced on-rail camera stuff like the Adventure games, more like a 3D Sonic 3/Knuckles - like it is already) with multiple stages and themes and so on, + a story of course, this can be the Sonic Mania of 3D Sonic games, and likely one of the best around, period. All of the crazy stuff like controls and momentum and camera and all of that (basically the hard part) is done already it seems. Not sure where it stands with the water physics and all that but that aside, all it needs now is more levels, and bosses, and a story (even if it's just told in between level comic style cutscenes or something). Anyway sorry, this is just really damn awesome.

This looks super solid! My only complaint is that the flickering/strobe effect caused by the two shades of green on the grass. If there was some cel-shading filter that makes cool speed lines that breaks up the flickering or even a slight blur at the bottom of the screen when going top speed. I think it could prevent headaches or seizures in the long run. Other than that, the platforming, the speed, the music, this is so damn good.
