I’m thinking of putting one of these at the top of our stairs for our baby (soon to be toddler). Would you say it’s safe? Could a child crawl underneath?

Does the retractable gate only open from left to right? Where i need to put it, on the left hand side there are obstructions but if i could swap it over, it would be perfect. It wont work to flip the retractor holder upside down, as the lock mechanism will be on the wrong side, facing the ground then. Thanks
