When it's in locked position are you able to still get it open off the holders?

When it is locked you can not move it at all . If not locked and put on a set of stairs, it will have give so easy for a kid to fall down the steps. If locked thou, the screen will not flex or give. Hope that helps

I read in the manual it says not to install at the top of the stairs(which is of course half of the reason we buy these things)Have you had any problems with the babies and the gate?

If you don’t lock it, it will give and will allow a kid to still fall down the stairs. Something you always have to remember to do when your using it. My wife always forgets and the kid almost fell once. But when it’s in the lock position it will not allow the screen to move at all and works well for us.
