Mom sacrifices job for autistic sons

#jamaicagleaner
Shakira Bryan Davis, the mother of two sons who have been diagnosed with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is seeking financial assistance to offset the costs of psychoeducational assessments.
The assessments, which cost $65,000 each, are required for seven-year-old Samuel and six-year-old Caleb to be placed in a special education school.

This situation is a great deal; the government needs to offer support. I'm exhausted just watching. Pray for you, mommy.

I pray that God send help. If I was in your home country I would have helped. The response of some people is soooo disheartening. It shows lack of empathy for others. Intelligent boys. God continue to watch over them and strengthen their parents.

My God, my God, lady I feel your pain. I am a parent of a now 32 years old Adult with Autism and you don’t have to tell me “ a mi fi tell you it nuh easy mi dear” The only difference I’m living in the US with my child and the resources are bountiful. But I admire your grace and patience and love for your children. You have two children which makes it even harder. Continue working hard, it’s hard work daily. I have been through it and continue to go on. The ignorance in our Jamaicans towards persons with disability is atrocious. These people are not normal until it’s their turn . The Hispanics and other nationalities are very sympathetic towards their own; our folks are a set of deplorable they way they behave towards the mentally challenged; it’s a disgrace. Those old idiots out there I have got no sympathy for them when they treat others a certain way. Continue to speak out and stay strong for your kids , they need you.

Just watching this video seems so overwhelming for this mom. One would think that a medical professional such as a nurse would understand the nature of autism, but like I always say, some a dem don't belong in this profession.

I went further than your suggestion, I pressured the NHS in the UK to do an MRI scan of my son's upper body. Guess what were revealed? A diseased ear drum, with eustation tube too narrow, diseased sinus, diseased tonsils which were too large and nodules on his voice box. 😢 He was given an urgent 3 in one operation operation.

Depending on the level of autism some of them can be controled. My son had melt downs but I had to punish him and show him this is not the way. He was diagnose at 12 with moderate autism and adhd. Covid was the best thing for us. When I pulled him from the prep school and teach him myself he improved a whole lot. I cried and ask why and then I said it could have been worst. A lot of people thinks he is normal because I show him how to mask to fit in. Therapy is expensive for real. And it cost me over 200k just to diagnose him. I had to push for it because the pediatrician said he was fine because he figured out stuff he gave him in a minute when he was 2 years old ans I saw signs. He did his pep exams and was place at a traditional high school. So a lot of them are brilliant is just time and effort they need.

Wow this is sad, alot of us Jamaicans are very ignorant. High levels of illiterate people, therefore you will find reactions as what's she was talking about. People are. Ot aware of disabilities in Jamaica there is hardly any information until it reaches your doorstep God forbids then you know what these people are going through. It's just the other day a disability act was put out. It's sad we portray ourselves as this loving at of people when truly our hearts have grown so cold. May the God of Abraham have mercy of this family. Thank God there is a husband, tired of seeing single parents in the country.

Sending you love mommy❤️❤️. It's so hard in Jamaica. There is not funding in Jamaica to help children like ours. when I was living in Jamaica I didn't get any help for my son. Living overseas now with my daughter I get 2 teacher aides to support my daughter and the government gets her 30k each year in funding for therapy, private swimming and talker to help build her vocabulary. You are a wonderful mother. sending you so much love and blessings 🇯🇲🇦🇺🌹🌹🌹. Do not give up on your sons. Keep going even when things are hard. They will make it. It's very hard but keep trying. many ppl in Jamaica do not know anything about autism. they think the kids are rude. Keep the faith. love always to you and your boys

The Learning Centre in crossroads does psycho-ed assessments that were more reasonable than anywhere else I tried. So try that too.
