Ramone McKenzie’s struggle for employment in the face of autism

JULY 21, 2023: Ramone McKenzie was a picture of dejection as he wondered aloud why prospective employers continue to ignore him, despite him possessing five STEM Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) subjects and certification from HEART/NSTA Trust.
The 25-year-old Rock Hall, St Andrew resident, who has been job hunting for some time, is convinced that he is being treated unfairly because he is autistic - a lifelong developmental disability which affects how people communicate and interact with the world.
A past student of Pembroke Hall High School in St Andrew, McKenzie has CSEC passes in integrated science, biology, electrical engineering, mathematics and English language. He also has level 2 HEART certification in industrial electronics.

The crazy part is he would probably be one of the best employees they ever had.
This made me 😭 . This is a cold world but Jesus I pray this young man will receive employment. You know his heart Jesus do it for him Lord.
I had to watch the video twice. I believe with every fibre of my being that Ramone is going to get a job.

I really hope so, we are all on a spectrum of sorts.
Let this young man start a youtube channel about his challenges in his life. My son is the same thing but each country is different. ❤❤❤

He is normal my lady,He is wonderfully made by God's hands,i work with them and some normal childrens cannot do what these childrens can do,,Hold on mom God's is able hold on you n your son,,
Its sad i feel for this young man i hope someone out there see this and give him a job he deserves a chance and he sound intelligent
I’m so sorry young man. My son is on the spectrum (mildly autistic) so I know the challenges that comes with being on the spectrum. I know it can be tough getting your point across and sadly Jamaica is not big on making accommodation for neurodivergent individuals. Don’t give up though, you will make it! You have a strong mom who loves you very much and you are resilient, so keep pushing, it will get better. I hope an employer will see your story and give you a job opportunity. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers 💛.
More community awareness is needed to educate members of the society about autism so that there is an understanding. Employers need to educate themselves and create more inclusive work environments. I hope this video will garner the help he needs. For too long Jamaica has had a false idea of persons with special education needs and or disabilities. The discrimination needs to end😢
This is why I am not too quick to take vacation or giving kids VACCINES. Study shows it does affect some kids negatively. But with every meds there are side effects. We can't win. I hope someone will see this and give him a Job. At least he is willing to work and not lazy like some grown ass able body men. ❤🙏🏾

True! I didn’t stick to the schedule the government gave me, my 8yo just got her 6yo vaccine. And she’s almost 9 now. They even came to my home when they missed the injections and i refused until I feel they are ready.
MAYBE HE COULD START HIS OWN YOU TUBE CHANNEL !!!! He could come up with some ideas for a channel and start his own business from there, and the star could help him promote his channel
May God open many doors for this young man.🙏🏽🙏🏽
This is an intelligent young man, who should be given an opportunity. Whoever have the heart and wisdom to employ him will never regret it. Society is made up of different types of people, all should given a chance to prove themselves. Never give up young man, I strongly believe you will get something. God bless you!
U can do a KZread channel also.....u speak so intelligent....please put yr story on ur channel and u will see how God take u to the Next level
Vry intelligent young man hope n trust that things will get bettr interm of is illness..mom continue to strong...i do av a son who av challenges too, n even tho he is on adult atimes he makes my heart flatter
I saw this in the newspaper and bought it and show my son because he doesn't understand how autistic people are treated. He too is diagnosed with moderate autism and I tell him each day we will have to create a job for you because I am not expecting someone in Jamaica to hire him. Thank God we are in a era of technology. KZread is there online trading, he can do computer coding because I know he cant become a doctor he makes too many mistakes so I wouldnt encourage him in that field. But their is hope. If this young man can fix computers he can create a job for himself. Right now I have a friend who wants someone to fix phones and computers for him.
My son has the same spectrum and he's almost 12 he's very smart and intelligent and loving and by watching this video😓😭😓😭😓😭helps me to understand him and love and stand up for him more dan before these kids are just like us but more ADVANCE cuz in our age we could not relate nor do or as quick as them with brain skills Jamaica we need to have an individual industry for these kids may god bless u ramone this is just a test u will make it bro❤❤❤🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I feel so sad for this young man lord help him to get a job lord please answer his plead 🙏🙏🙏😭
Lord he needs you now more than ever plz help him .
I hope that by listening to him someone out there will give him a job because he sounds very intelligent and I know there is a place in the world for this kid may God open a way for him and somebody will give him a job if it's even to try him and pay a small amount until he developed the experience that they said he need do is he going to get experience if nobody will give him a chance this kid is intelligent and willing to try giving him a break please
I have faith in God that he will do something for this young man and his family… don’t loose hope .. God will deliver .
Wow I love wen you said you av hope you're very intelligent son someone is gonna give you a job soon because ur story is very touching just stay focused.
I pray gods blessings on you young man for speedy young man i have an adult son in jamaica with mental challanges the difference mine does not want to work in america here where i live autistic people all challenge people are well taken care of and are periority for jobs blessinge young man youll be fine listening for great things keep heart love you beautiful soul
God will bless him. One of my close family is austic. Things will work out. He needs try H.E.A.R.T or government. employment programs. Nevermind, things will get better.
BTW, he's cute too.
Near or far, we are praying that Ramone's desire for employment is met and he loves his duty and his dedication and willingness is rewarded and recognized on the job and amongst his fellow workers and community. Let get it together Jamaica and the government leaders in leadership; we are certainly failing the people and children/students whom lack the accessibility and accommodations to school, job security, livelihood and treatment in loving kindness
With God all things are possible, you have to have faith and endurance things will work out when it's your time no one can stop you it's just time you will and you're going to get a job just be patient and keep job hunting there is light at the end of every tunnel
IF HE WAS IN ENGLAND HE WOULD HAVE BEEN fully employed, he would not be discriminated against !!!!
May I inherit half of your strength.
He is such a smart and intelligent young man. I pray that employment will come his way. I feel his mom’s pain. This video made me tear up 😢
These folkes are very analytical and work very well in analytical jobs, such as forensics, data analytics, statistics etc. If someone could help him in this area they would be surprised at the value they would add
Amazing young man 😢❤
Pray many business and entities start to be considerate and make basic accommodations for persons with disability to be apart of the working class and help to make an impact. The government all agencies needs to have in each work place, enact and implement positions and internships to individuals who are disabled and who needs disability accommodation to get gainful employment and make a Difference ❤
Be encouraged son god is great there is nothing to hard for him that he cannot do, he will see you through. God bless you❤❤❤
Mom God his able just stay strong u and ur son this story is very touching but keep the faith young man
Omg.. If I could I would but I pray someone will offer him a job❤
Breaks my heart , this young man deserves a chance, his very intelligent and more then capable to hold a job and grow in it, despite his condition! That is to appreciate him even more…
Praying for him
I will pray for you
Handsome young man God got you 🙏 stay strong mommy

God bless you and I will share your story … they are still humans out there and I believe someone can come with a great job offer 🙏🏽
He is well spoken
If he went to the USA they will employ him 😊
Ahhh man 😢, God bless him. Wow, Jamaicans are so ignorant and judgemental at times. Things like this makes me so happy, I live in a country with knowledge and resources. Everyone is given an opportunity, regardless of who and what they battle with. This young man is so smart and intelligent. But God will do it for you and him mom. My heart breaks, because I know the stigmas that surround disabilities. I'm praying for the favour of God and blessings over your life 🙏💙🔥🥰. So proud of you

You sound ignorant when you make a statement like that because if you know the history of the country that you live in and the way they treated people with special needs you would not make comments like that. I know I a particular country that they normally treat people with special needs so gruesome, that they had to introduce laws to protect them, and I don't see Jamaica at that level. It is good that these cases are highlighted that people will become more aware of what they people are going through and not just view them as " fool, fool" (that is the term that some Jamaicans normally use to describe them), but see them as individuals that can make contributions to the society, some Jamaicans are too negative, always criticizing, but never having any solution.
He will overcome!
You are fighter Vannet.
Oh my this is hurtful
Person who are in certain job are not qualified, but because of links i know Ramons is capable
It is ashame on every institutions that this young man had seek employment and was rejected because of a sickness that he didnt not buy at shop. I hope those who interview him doesnt get sick!! What a heartless world we are living in. Had it not been for the grace of God some of us would be like this young man or worst. Jamaican employers wake up!!! Wake up!! Wake up!! Jesus soon come everything right now is pointing to the coming of Jesus Christ.
Mom, stay strong. Your Prayer will be answered. God is able
Get him to learn a trade....trust mi it's not over.....we have to fight for what we want.....mummy please put yr head together
If he was in America he would be employed
Honestly if he was here in England he would be working come on jamaican where is the love every one deserves a chance he speakes very intelegent help him please
This is our country this is Jamaica who cares?
As Tupac says keep your head up Young brother, you're facing trials and tribulations but with your great spirit And your mother's love and by putting your faith in Jesus! You can and will overcome any mountain 🏔️! In Jesus name I pray amen!
So sad. I hope he get a job soon..
This is so sad. I wish I could employ you
Ramon you are highly intelligent , so think global rather than local. Create your own job!! I suppoft the suggestions that you should start your own youtube channel. Document your experiences, challenges and triumphs. Start a plant nursery (if only 20 people give you 3 plants each, wow! You're in your way!). You can get free and cheap plants from RADA and thr ministry of agriculture). 2. Go into apiculture. There is a worldwide shortage of honey, and everything produced by bees is valuable! No wastage. Those closed doors are a sign that your best employer will be YOU! YOUR GREATEST CHEERLEADERS ARE YOUR MOM AND THOSE PEOPLE WHO COMMENTED. i guarantee that your 6 monrhs apprenticeship witb yourself will be 100% rewsrding if you start a youtube channel and record youd daily activity in a short 5 minute video go do it!!!
He needed Aba therapy , in Jamaica we dont care for these special people. The government needs to do more. I also have a year old twin who is on severely autistic so I know the challenges , she is also non verbal so it's a big challenge, luckily he is taking. I believe he will get help😊

Vannet is a very supportive mother. Going through college Ramone was a baby and she did well being a mother, wife and student. Vannet your son will be employed in Jesus name. No is the other way around. He probably wont survive in jamaica but if he migrates he will. Hopefully he will soon get a job but in the meantime take the suggestions to do a KZread channel sbout living with autism in jamaica to bring awareness and Hopefully a change. He'll also earn from KZread. Then when he gets a job he will have two earnings. Jamaica a hole dung!!!
Why not asked the church for help even in video graphic and some one to sit with him to show him how. They learn very fast and remember things.Jesus Christ help this young man in your name amen.
TELL U BOUT THIS RACIST UNFAIR SHALLOW MINDED PEOPLE IN JAMAICA

Am watching this in tears because my son has autism and downsyndrom and am telling you it's not an easy road but in God do I put my trust.
You know is that vaccine mash him up the same thing with my grandson. He was fine all alone until that vaccinations.
