    I think the key of this (that you point out with your great experiment) is that the pressure must be sealed in the lower chamber and not leak past the funnel edge. The fix using just the parts of the Moka Pot is to make sure the gasket seals against the funnel. Most people focus on the gasket sealing the threaded lower part of the pot to the top, but the gasket has a second separate purpose: The funnel must also seal to the gasket so that the steam pressure does not leak around the funnel edge and up the "stack" (the part that the coffee eventually comes out of). To make sure the funnel seals: 1.Make sure the gasket is still pliable (incidentally, a brand new gasket doesn't always seal as they are a bit stiff from the factory). 2. Make sure the gasket is clean (i.e. No coffee grounds stuck to or embedded in the gasket). 3. Make sure the top edge of the funnel is clean and free from coffee. When you fill the funnel with fresh coffee, make sure to run your finger over the edge and remove any coffee grounds before screwing on the top. Any bits of coffee between the funnel edge and the gasket will stop the funnel from sealing properly. 4. Make sure the pot top and bottom are well tightened. I hope this helps someone out there :)

    This was an excellent post. I couldn't figure out (even w/a new gasket) what was wrong. I'd hear the water, then a lot of steam, then it would sputter out a 1/4 cup maybe. I feel like I'll never have this issue, again..

    Yeah. I have a Bialetti from back in the 70s. Original funnel. And new gaskets that have been broken in. As clean as I get it I just can't seem to get a full seal without the teflon tape.

    For me a more permanent fix that basically fixes this discrepancy between funnel and bottom pot was sanding down a millimeter of threaded rim. In my case I could clearly see that the rim of bottom part is higher than funnel rim.

    There's one problem though. The metal filter around which the silicone gasket sits is getting slightly hollowed after the brewing. Due to the upward pressure. I reversed it today and it got hollowed out once again. At this rate, I think it will develop cracks and completely give out.

  • @viniciusandrea3251

    @viniciusandrea3251

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@mesri3 I think it's normal that the filter becomes hollowed. Sure, if it gets too hollowed, maybe there's something wrong, but the filter of my smaller Moka Pot, which I've never needed to use the PTFE tape, is also hollowed. Maybe you should try leave it like that and check if the process of hollowing gets stabilized. If yes, then just enjoy your coffee, this is not a big deal.

  • @mesri3

    @mesri3

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@viniciusandrea3251 ok, cool but today, I decreased the amount of coffee powder and the hollowing didn't happen. the coffee decoction also came into the upper chamber more smoothly and more of the water from the lower chamber got used. so I guess I was putting too much coffee powder. thanks for being so kind and considerate in replying. and even bigger thanks for making this video. you gave me a moka pot i had given up on.

    @@mesri3 You guys are having a good discussion here! Can I add that the problem is the design; the Bialetti gaskets, when tightened down only the very outside of the gasket ring gets compressed. So when the pressure starts to build, the water and steam simply escape AROUND the filter basket (bypassing the coffee in the filter!)... LOL mine does that too.. My generic cheap ebay moka pot - by examining it you can see just by disassembling it why it works so much better...

The 3 cup just hasn't worked right (same issue that you were showing here) and I noticed that the basket / funnel was a bit bent and mis-shapen. Not bad, but def not perfectly round. I bought a replacement funnel and that solved the problem. As the Moka works based on pressure, you need to ensure that it is very tight. This is a great tip and I'll remember it for the future if needed! Thank you!

Sits nicely where you put the ptfe tape. I think it was 3 or 4 uk£ for 10. Perfect! Now, it runs silently, the only sputtering comes when all the water has been pushed up through the coffee. My first Mike pot so it took me a while to realise it was working properly.

Because i read somewhere that whenever the steam can find a way out other than the funnel, it will fail to come up. Now it ALWAYS made a good job ! Thank You so so much for this tip !

    Your video was a real revelation to me, Vini. I had always thought that the sole purpose of the gasket was to stop the coffee that enters the funnel from escaping through the screw thread that binds the two compartments. It had never occurred to me that the gasket is also there to stop steam and potentially hot water escaping from the lower compartment through the gap between the rim of the funnel and the rim of the lower compartment. Your demonstration shows this brilliantly. This has made me understand better how my Moka pot works. But it has ALSO made me question some of my fundamental assumptions I had made until now about what is happening in my pot. I have learnt over the years that each time I replace the gasket, I can expect a livelier brew for the first five or so days, in which the brew takes longer, there is a clear and throaty sound as it rises through the column in the upper compartment, and it will start sputtering earlier. The more the gasket gets seasoned, the more the pot returns to normal brew times and to a silent trickle as the coffee comes out of the column. I had assumed that the new gasket provides a firmer seal, that this raises the atmospheric pressure in the pot, and that it is this that causes a longer heatup time and a livelier brew. But I am now wondering whether the reverse is true: that the gasket needs time to perfectly mould itself to the rim of the pot, and so the first brews are longer and livelier due to a less efficient seal (and consequently *lower* atmospheric pressure in the lower compartment) and this is why a new gasket can cause longer heatup times and livelier brews. So can you explain which of these two (or maybe neither) is so?? If I can understand better how the Moka pot works, I wil be able to make better Moka coffee and more easily resolve some of the problems we can encounter from time to time 😉. ------------------------------------------- After well over 10 years (probably nearer 20) of making Moka coffee daily, I can honestly say this is the *_best_* and most useful KZread video I have ever seen on the Moka pot. I very much hope you will post more videos with tips on how to further improve our Moka brewing skills ☕! ------------------------------------------- By the way here is the context of how I came across your video: I had just changed the gasket on my 3-cup pot and, though I am used to a new gasket causing a longer brew with sputtering starting much earlier for the first five or so days resulting in an over-extracted flavour, this time I was getting alarmed that it was remaining the same for much longer than five days (with the sputtering starting right from the beginning of outflow) and with no immediate prospect of resolution. I then found your video that explained *_so well_* what was happening. I first followed *@blobscott's* advice in his post (written _"1 month ago"_ at the time of my writing this post) and then, though experiencing real progress, felt nevertheless that progress was insufficient and so added your trick of adding PTFE teflon tape to the rim of the funnel. I'm not sure whether the PTFE tape added further improvement or was just duplicating what I had already achieved with @blobscott's advice, but certainly the result is already a great improvement on what I was experiencing until then. I'm still experiencing long heatup times, and a livelier brew (i.e. faster outflow, & some noise as it rises through the column) but it is no longer sputtering from the beginning of outflow. The sputtering comes at the end as it should do. ------------------------------------------- So anyway, I very much hope you can find time out of your doubtless busy schedule to answer my question from paragraphs 3 and 4 😁.

    Hi! Sorry for the late answer. I hope to find you well and healthy! Well, unfortunately I don't have the answer to your questions. I have to admit I'm not a experienced coffee maker, I just applied my experience from my formation in Physics and from my Laboratory experience for making my PhD studies. My hypothesis, tough, is that there is no considerable difference in the atmospheric pressure inside the boiler when the rim between the funnel and the boiler. But maybe I'm wrong and you seem to have much more experience and knowledge in this topic than me! I'm just a coffee lover who wanted to fix his Moka Pot and help everyone who were facing the same issue : )

    you don't believe how thankful i am for this, i had tried EVERYTHING! I had mastered a smaller moka pot pretty well and bought a bigger one from a flea market a while back just to notice it sputtered like hell every time i used it no matter what I did and it was so frustrating when nothing i had done with the smaller one worked on the big one, even when adjusted for the bigger size. BUT NOW IT WORKS FOR THE FIRST TIME AFTER MONTHS OF TRYING! for some unknown reason i actually even had this tape in my closet after several konmari purges; not even knowing what it was i had kept it for years, so i guess now i found out why? :D THANK YOU

    Great video, I’ve only had this problem once, and it was when I bought preground coffee. Usually I grind my own and it works great. The preground coffee was made for drip, so it shouldn’t have sputtered. Not sure what happened. Regardless, great video and a genius solution to the problem. I would love to see other tips with how you brew your moka. Hot water vs cold water at the beginning, what grind size, and how much heat you apply. Thanks!

    This is brilliant. Using Moka Pots for years, and mine was making good coffee, even though it was leaking at the chamber joint. The gasket was hardening, so, I changed out the gasket. After putting in a new gasket, had gurgling from the very beginning and not all the water would boil out. Looked at this video and applied two rounds of pipe joint tape as instructed. Works like a charm, and as an engineer, knew this made complete sense as soon as seeing the video. The coffee is stronger, too. It's one of those, "now why didn't I think of that" fixes. If you have an older pot, try this before you do all the fixes with the grind of the coffee, the water temperature, the fire temperature, etc. Over the years, the funnel and chamber fit get out of round, and this solves it. Thank you!!!

    Thanks for you video, it helped me solved my problem after installing a new gasket, i think my problem was a combination of several things, deformed funnel, new gasket probably no seating in as well as the previous one and not screwing the top enough as i did not need to tighten it too much before. The PTFE surely did not do any harm but the water was coming up before i added it. My previous gasket was absolutely fused to the pot.
