Mogollon Monster 100 miles Ultra Marathon - Going in Blind

Спорт

Only 3 weeks after Leadville 100 miles in Colorado, I’m running Mogollon Monster 100 miles Ultra marathon endurance race - a point-to-point 100 miles of trail running in Arizona, along the Mogollon Rim. This was my 10th 100 miler ultra trail marathon I ran this year. With its 6 climbs up the rim for a total of ~18,000 feet of elevation gain, this race organized by Aravaipa Running is one of the rare non-lottery Hardrock Qualifier.
Curious about the trail running gear I use and recommend: check out this link

Running Mogollon Monster 100 miles ultra marathon is challenging, and only 3 weeks since my last 100 miles ultra marathon isn’t much, but what truly scared me was that those 3 weeks were extremely busy with work. Between work, training, healing from the last race, hiking with Nora, and traveling back and forth and back and forth from CO to CA to AZ, managing this channel - I simply didn’t have to prepare for Mogollon Monster 100 miles ultra marathon race. The extent of my preparation was to only glance at the aid station chart and noticing that there were very few of them, and that many were over 10 miles apart.
What’s more, Nora has helped on so many races this year, that we decided she should take the weekend “off” and go do her own adventure! So I went in solo, and because I didn’t have time to figure out aid station or course, I also didn’t have time to pack any drop bag. Instead, I simply filled my bag with a bunch of food, extra clothes and light for the night, and went in this 100 miles ultra marathon run in the dark. Fully blind.
I’m not happy I came in so underprepared, and that’s very atypical for me. I don’t typically spend THAT much time coming in a race, but I do have my check list of basic information I want to know (e.g., when is sunrise/sunset, where do I expect to be on the course, where should I have drop bag, what’s the temperature range, what gear do I need, is it technical?). But not this time… All I can say is this - don’t try this at home! These stunts are performed by professional under the strict supervision of experts and healthcare professionals.
Luckily, Aravaipa Running always organize great race with fantastic support, helpful volunteers, and attracts the best of the best when it comes to friendly runners. It was amazing running with you all day and night (and day again…)!
Next stop, The Bear 100 miles ultra marathon in Utah - Sept 29! It’s the last big mountain race of the year!
As always, thanks for watching!

    That's right - and that's a key message I'm trying to display with this channel - trail and ultra aren't just for athlete and all. It's also for people with a pretty sedentary work that have a taste for adventure!

    That does NOT make sense! Why would Chewbacca, an 8 foot tall Wookie, live on Endor with a bunch of 2 foot tall Ewok? Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, if Chewbacca lives on the Mogollon Rim, you need to like this video!

    Answer: Chewbacca and a Ewok were next to each other in the woods going poo. Chewbacca looked down at the Ewok and said: "Hey Ewok, you ever had trouble with poo sticking to your hair"? Ewok looks up at him and says: "No". Chewbacca then grabs the Ewok and wipes his butt with him.

    It was! And yes, although I'm not super 'strict' about it - for example running 2 of them in Sept, but none in Dec. It's more about picking races that are fun, but trying to not race more than 3-4 weeks otherwise I'll get injured...

    Thanks for this recap, I was out there with you, but finished closer to 35 hours: It’s no doubt a tough and unforgiving course. I too noticed not having any company in the final stages this year, last year we had a group of 4 from Geronimo into the finish. This year I had no one in front or behind. Between Pine Canyon and the finish, didn’t see a single person. But only half the field finished this year. Congrats on yet another finish! Your a Monster!!

  • @runningwithsimon

    @runningwithsimon

    I can only speak for this year, so hard to say if this is typical or not. Day time was fairly hot. We got very lucky with the cloud and little drizzle, otherwise some of the climb would have been even worse. It's good to carry extra water for some of these mid-day climbs. Night was pretty comfortable, I think I only wore a long sleeve shirt, and that's really mostly because I got cold from the sweat. T-shirt maybe could be ok-ish if you are cold tolerant. I was carrying much more than this long sleeve (buffy, hat, gloves, rain/wind breaker) simply because I had no clue and prefer having too much than too little.

    I think if we can handle New Hampshire's muggy hot summers and icy cold winters, we've got a good chance anywhere! Good luck, go represent! Edit: and our beastly little mountains! 😂

  • @runningwithsimon

    Sorry to hear about the injury - I hope you can bounce back! I have a fairly demanding and stressful job actually, so yes, it can be very hard (and some times impossible) to find enough time to train, race, travel for race, and make these videos. But I think coming from pretty demanding job, you get used to prioritization, schedule management and planning.

    Congratulations on a hard won, impressive finish! What a tough but gorgeous course. Seeing you actually running after 103 miles was awesome. Nora is such a great partner to run you in like that! Do you find that races get easier as you progress through the year, or do they get more difficult due to accumulated fatigue/ niggles? Edit: did the boys ever get to buy the erection for mom??? 😂

  • @runningwithsimon

    @runningwithsimon

    10 ай бұрын

    I think the accumulated fatigue is certainly a factor. Now just out of The Bear, I'm feeling it for sure. I think even starting at Leadville I'd say I have been underperforming. Which is totally fine by me - I don't really care about finishing time (as long as I finish). But the risk of injury is a real problem so I'll make sure to get some rest after Javelina next month
