Black Canyon 100k Trail Ultra Marathon - Running Through Snow, Mud and Water

Спорт

Join Nora and Simon's epic adventure running Black Canyon 100k Trail Ultra Marathon - a point-to-point 100km ultra marathon along the Black Canyon Trail in Arizona! Running together was not about being the fastest, but rather, having an amazing adventure, pushing our limits, and importantly, supporting each others through adversity! And yes, we passed the "IKEA Test"
Curious about the trail running gear I use and recommend: check out this link

Black Canyon Ultras is an ultra marathon organized by Aravaipa Running and comprise both Black Canyon 100k and Black Canyon 60k. We ran the Black Canyon 100k, which is arguably the biggest 100km race in the USA! It's both a golden ticket race for Western States 100 miles, but also part of the World Trail Majors series. ... But that's something for elite runners to worry about.
As for us, we're much more interested in the fact that we had many friends running this weekend, and that the trail is absolutely gorgeous! This year was special too, as the start received some snow the night before the race. So we ran in snow, mud, water. The temperatures were freezing, later hot, and much later freezing again. Lovely... But we're tough cookies!
We had a wonderful day pushing our limits, but importantly, supporting each other and keeping a smile all day.
Next for me is Jackpot Ultras 100 miles - Feb 17. I'll be aiming for a sub24!
As always, thanks for watching!

I did the Black Canyon 60k and was excited to say hi to you and Nora at the expo. I didn't know she was doing the 100k with you. How wonderful. I loved watching the two of you kill it in this video. Sending you both congratulations. I live in North Phoenix, I can't believe you both hung out in your vehicle. My husband and I totally would have let ya chill at our house since we are empty nesters now. It was friggin cold. I would not have been able to sleep. Great job getting it done with all the crazy phenomena you both experienced.

Ah thanks! I guess I should have said it. It really wasn't too bad with the cold - we have a big comforter which is cozy (and almost romantic...as far as sleeping at Walmart can be romantic...). The main issue was more the rain - it's really loud. But we were fine!

It sure is! Adventuring like that (either racing or just simply going out just the two of us) really brings us together.

That snow is unusual for that race. So muddy! But, you both did amazing! I love the mountains/hills in the background and the rolling trails. Great job Simon and Nora on the race and of course, on the video too.

Inspired by Your Journey & Seeking Advice Hey Simon, I hope this message finds you well. As an emerging ultra runner and fellow starting KZreadr, I've been greatly inspired by the authenticity and clarity you bring to your content. Your unique approach to communication has encouraged me to embrace my true self in my videos, a lesson I find invaluable. While my message today isn't directly about running, I must mention how your insights and experiences in the sport have been incredibly beneficial to me. They're raw, straightforward, and devoid of unnecessary fluff-qualities that make your videos not only educational but also highly enjoyable. Thank you for being such a significant source of inspiration and encouragement. I wish you the best of luck in your upcoming 200-miler and all your future endeavors. This year, I'm set to take on the Grizzly100 in Belgium, a challenge I couldn't complete last year due to a knee injury at km 66. But I'm determined to conquer it this time around. Before I sign off, I wanted to get your perspective on something. What are your thoughts on processed foods and their potential to cause inflammation in the bloodstream, leading to energy loss as the body combats these toxins? Thanks again for your unwavering inspiration. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Best regards, Mark

I don't think I'm an expert on nutrition. But high level, I think "processed food" is a bit of a wildcard term that can be extremely broad and undefined. Technically, any level of steps would mean something is 'processed' - so cooking, baking, etc. Making cheese is a process, etc. So basically for me, first, it really depends what one means by 'processed'. And so it's more of a spectrum in my mind than just "is it processed - yay or nay? I guess we're talking more 'ultra processed' like candies, coca cola, donuts, ice cream, etc. So even for those, I think I'd want to focus more on specifics than a broad category, and that context matters. Take for example fries. Is it healthy? Well, no, probably not. But moderation makes it totally fine to have some and enjoy them. What about Coca Cola - well typically I'd say unhealty,...but the main reason it's unhealthy is that it's highly caloric and has no nutritional values like vitamins or fibers. So it's empty calories. But in the context of long distance running - that's kind of what you need. If you can digest it after 80km, then let's have it! You won't run 160km eating only lettuce and carrots. As for inflammation - very tricky! There's certainly a link between inflammation and some food. Because there is undeniably a link between gut microflora and just general state of our immune system (and that comes from someone who knows a thing or two about immunology....). But we don't know why or the exact mechanism, so it's all speculation and anecdotal I this point. And I don't think "processed" is necessarily the factor however. I've heard anecdotally that for some people, eating either onion or garlic can worsen their arthritis. Similarly, high sugar content (aka corn syrup, aka see coca cola above) can worsen their inflammatory bowel disease and/or arthritis. So it's not a stretch to think it could affect joint pain in running. And we often associate "processed" with high sugar content - so there you go. Not a direct link, and I'd rather focus on food content than a broad 'processed' label, but it's at least something worth thinking about. Now more practically, should that change how we behave and what we eat? Well, the science isn't clear, so it's hard to give clear evidence based advice. Which means, we fall back to the good old - "if you have issues, why not try a few different things and see what works best for YOU". As for myself, I definitely still eat processed food - I can't imagine doing ultras without any. At some point, it's just near-impossible for me to eat anything but that. So race day - anything goes. If I don't puke it, I'm happy. In a day to day life, I try to be healthy but don't go nuts about it. It feels that anything in moderation will be fine - at least for me.

For the list of calories at each aid station, are you consuming all that "in" the aid station or taking it with you? Also Nora said "gratitude stage". I like It and will start using it. I have been calling it "the grind" but I like the positive spin. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

How do you both deal with running in wet socks? Did you change them at aid stations? Interested to know because this would be a recipe for blister disaster for me - great job too 👍

  • @runningwithsimon

    @runningwithsimon

    4 ай бұрын

You’re right. Nora had a bunch of blisters after. I didn’t do much but the tape my feet ahead of time. If there weren’t so many crossing I’d have either change socks / shoes or remove them at crossing. But there were just too many. Feet got wet from mud snow too but that dried once it got warmer.
