Mobius Cam Pt.II A Solution To Jello?

Ғылым және технология

This is a short video with a possible solution to the jello effect caused by vibration from the motors or propellers. The topic has been talked about quit a bit on the R/C Groups Forum. Unfortuantly for some reason the resolution of the video doesn't look as good as what the original file was. Here is a few links that are associated with the video:

This is a thread on the R/C Grpups regarding the Mobius Cam and GPS interference:
www.rcgroups.com/forums/showth...
DJI Phantom support forum on R/C Groups:
www.rcgroups.com/forums/showth...
The Mobius Cam is a great cam for the price at about 1/5 the cost of a GoPro. The resolution is impressive for it's size weight and cost. There is a CMOS sensor in the camera which might be the reason it is a little over sensitive to vibration. There has also been some reports of the camera interfering with satellite reception. I had no problems while it was mounted upside down and below the satellite antenna. I used copper shielding on the camera mount board just in case. I suggest you read the forum threads on both the Mobius and Phantom before you invest your money.

    This video is one of the best instructional video I have seen in a long time! One is a great introduction which shows the structure properly. Then when you show how good this work in real life, makes me start to think about buying all the parts that you have. This has been a great commercial for both Mobius and DJI Phantom. Good work!

    Paul, your idea is great and I didn't have any light surgical tubing or fuel line but did have some vacuum hose which might have worked but also could have been too stiff? I then got the idea of using some 300 ohm twin-lead. This was real easy to setup using two copper plated circuit boards on the XK Detect X380. The layout consisted of two boards with 4 short twin lead lengths. A RunCam HD was mounted on the bottom side of the board and the backside twin-lead lengths were shorter than the front lengths which angled the camera down a few degrees. The front lengths were 4.5 inches and back ones were 3.5 inches in length. I ran a test on it and like your setup there was very little jello and the props on this quad are a set of 9 1/2" carbon fiber props. The props replace the DJI 9450 props and these had to be drilled out and balanced. I am going to order some surgical tubing to replace the twin-lead cable to save weight. Thanks for your ideas!

    Hi and thanks. The raw clip was much better even after the video editor. The resolution was better and there was smooth panning without dropped frames that make it look jerky. For some reason the KZread reduced the quality of the upload. J

    Hello Rick, Ya know the more I look at that it seems like there are dropped frames of something. I wonder if something happens when KZread compresses the video. I'll have to take a look at the original again. I might be better off setting to 720P-60 to compensate for the panning when the copter is in yaw and rotating on it's axis. Thanks John

  • @DadHav

    I think Rick could be right also. Actually I thought of filling the tubing but then thought sound and vibration travels really good through some liquids. I think incorporating longer tubing is a great idea as long as it can be in a configuration that keeps the camera stable, Maybe the X. Magnets are pretty much out because the compass interference. You can't even have keys or a cell phone in you're pocket when you calibrate before flight. I'm sure there can be improvements though. Thanks John

    Thanks for the demo and for thinking outside of the box on your anti jello solutions , I am favorably impressed with the Mobius unit regarding cost and capabilities . Happy to see you turned off the sound on this fly around which prompts me to inquire as which component is the most noise offensive , motors or props and do you have any suggestions for noise suppression or elimination . Thanks for your time and demos .

    Hello Jack, The worst of the noise for me is with the props and I don't know of anyway to to reduce the effect. these white props are noisier for me than a set of carbon fiber that I use and I think that's because the soft plastic cavitates more than the carbon fiber. Thanks for watching and the compliments. John

    I rigged up something similar to what you did after seeing your video. I didn't have any RC fuel line and tried some old vhf twinlead cable and it did help on a X380 quad. I then tried some aquarium tubing but it would kink so I never really wanted to use it. I am thinking that surgical tubing would be the best. The first trial was a lot better than any mount that I have tried including several carbon fiber plates with the rubber ball mounts. The props have been balanced with all my testing and your idea was the best. Most of the fellas flying the X380 use the stock gimbal shipped with the XK Detect X380-C. I fly FPV and the weight is critical for a long flight so a heavy gimbal is not good and besides, if the quad happens to go down the extra weight means you will have a lot of damage. I seen a review from Copter Hubsan flying with the stock X380-A camera/gimbal setup and it appeared to look real good with very little jello. The problem with jello comes in when flying in the wind and with high throttle. I went ahead and ordered the camera/gimbal setup and was surprised to see very little jello in the video. I did find out that the camera was a Mobius in a different cover! The Mobius software works with the camera and looks real good for customizing the camera. The Mobius cameras are pretty impressive and far cheaper than the GoPro cameras. I do have a GitUp Git1 camera but mounting it is a problem without a gimbal. The better camera the Git2 which has gyro stabilization should have been the one I ordered. The first test I did with the Twinlead was using a RunCam HD which which has given good results. Thanks for your ideas and happy flying.

    Hey Analog Man, Ha, I never up graded my stereo from a tube set. You might guess there's a reason. Ya, good luck with trying the fuel line, it solved the problem for me. Try to find som soft line. I'm gonna try going a little softer yet with some surgical tubing. Of course you know balance is important. I don't know if I mentioned it but I got some good results by balancing the motors with the use of a cell phone vibration analyzer ap. So far I have never had a problem with interference with the Mobius on the Phantom. I'm using a copper clad board between the camera and the Phantom just to be careful. Good luck and let me know if you try the fuel line. John

    ***** Hey there DadHav. Ya, you figured out the reference in my handle for sure! Lots of great "tube stuff" out there. Although I've got lots of digital, I'm still using analog a lot - by choice. Anywho, I just tested my 1st fuel line cam mount. It worked very well, but not perfect. As you suggested, I need tubing with more flex. The ground clearance on the 350 QX is restrictive and forced me to make really tight bends with the fuel line. Still, I believe this is going to work out fine. I also deployed copper foil tape on my new cam mount and GPS is still locking OK. I also have it inside the body of the quad just to be safe. BTW, the place you're flying looks amazing! I'm also in OH, a bit south of Cbus. Praying for Spring!!! Thanks for the reply man. I'll keep you posted on my cam mount progress. Oh, I'd really like to hear about your motor balancing process!! Hi Paul, your mount should work good on most cameras and they might have to be tuned by using different lengths of the plastic fuel line. I am not using a Mobius camera on my X380 instead I'm using the RunCam HD and the reasoning is that after reviewing several reviews on the Mobius there was interference caused by the camera since it's not shielded. I hope they have corrected the problem. I checked the RunCam HD and it has a coating on the inside for shielding and so far no problems with it running FPV. I was wondering if anyone has tried surgical hose which is available off of Ebay? I am thinking that different lengths need to be used like for the rear of the camera in order to tilt it down. You have a real good idea which will help people get started with the quads and cameras. Thanks for the video.

    Nice! I think Rick Reyes might be on to something with the X-pattern mount. If this was my project, I'd experiment with different types of tubing, or maybe filling the tubes with a liquid of some sort, e.g. oil. But all in all, you have pretty much eliminated the jello already. Well done. P.S. How about magnetic mounting with the dampening material (e.g. foam) in between magnets? How would the magnets interfere with the camera/aircraft overall?

    You might be right about the liquids (I'd still want to try the oil, just for the heck of it). Maybe the tubing material itself is the key to ultimate results. Have you tried some of the sound and vibration dampening materials that the professional car audio industry is selling? They are supposedly very good, albeit some are pretty expensive. Much better than bituminous or rubber sheets, though, which work mostly by adding weight which in turn reduces vibrations.

    Not sure if anyone has mentioned it.. i was having a ton of jello with the mobius, what a lot of it ended up being was the camera not fitting in tight to the slide in case. Once I mounted the camera directly to the copter (sans slide case) my issues were resolved.

    Hello David, If you plan to use a gimbal you might have some improvement also, but keep in mind prop and motor balance should be the first thing you go after. I balanced the motors by using a vibrometer program on the cell phone. I just put the phone against the plastic by the motor and without the props on I added some tape pieces on the rotor until I checked the vibration. Good luck J

    Luis Alvarez Hello Luis. I balanced my rotors using a vibrometer application on my cell phone. With no prop on the motor I touch the phone to the end of the arm by the motor and watch the xyz wavelengths produced by the vibration. I used the silver reflective tape to balance the rotors because it is a little heavier than regular tape and the color matches. I randomly stick a piece about 10 mm wide anywhere on the rotor then move it around until I see the vibration at it's lowest point. I then add or subtract tape for fine tuning. I hope this might help some. The only other thing I can think of is trying thinner surgical tubing on the mount. John

    Hello, The boards are coper plated circuit boards. I think I got them from Radio Shack. You don't have to use these though, any thin fiberglass or plastic would work. I thought the copper would shield the camera from the circuitry but many have made this mount without any shielding.

    I see you are from Ohio? I live in Canton, OH and primarily motovlog and post videos on KZread. I've flown RC aircraft for years. Problem here in the Canton, OH area, is finding places to fly. Most parks/schools have banned it. I purchased a v262 quad to start out with. Will be purchasing a Mobius soon. Looking at these different mount options. I sell polymers/plastics for a living.. Sound abatement and vibration dampening is an area I have some knowledge in. Great video and nice job on the mount....

    Hey Mr. Polymers. You've probably run into my friends Roy and Jason at Aerotech hobby shop then. We have some things in common. Years ago I was in the injection molding business in Hartville and was Engineering Manager for another molding company by the name of Different Dimensions which was on Killian Rd, so I know a little bit about plastics as well. Of course we like the R/C hobbies and I'm a Chevy kind of guy also. In my years I had a 58 a Corvair, 63 SS convertible, 64 SS convertible, 75 Monte Carlo, and still have my 1992 Corvette. When I was a kid more than 55 years ago I had two Lambretta motor scooters. One was the blue and cream colored 175 cc and the other was a very old 150 with the tubing style sport frame. Great fun for a 14 year old. I know what your saying about finding a good place to fly. I think the Canton club flies somewhere in the Sate Rd / St. Peters Church Rd. area. I'm in the Corsair Model Airplane Club that used to fly at the Summit Fairgrounds but we lost the field to the parks. We fly out in Kent now on property that used to be part of Rocky Knolls golf course. Maybe our paths will cross some day. Keep me posted on your Mobius experience. John

    ***** Yes. I'm familiar with Aerotech. Years ago, when in college, I built my first gas powered trainer. A guy by the name of Bob Budash? who owned Modelers Haven did a test flight for me. Found I had a bad warp in the wing since I did not build with a wing jig. That was 34 years ago. Have flown off/on at Stark branch of Kent State until it was banned. Have recently purchased a few helicopters including a 6 channel variable pitch heli that I have a hard time controlling. Since I motovlog, I like to post various KZread videos. I thought the quad would be great as a means of getting aerial video. So, thought I would start cheap with the v262. I really like the DJI Phantom, but not in the budget with kids still in college. I'll subscribe to you. My brother in law owned property at Mohawk just to take his boat and ski. I've been there a few times. I think he has long since sold the property. Maybe we can get together sometime when I get better with flying these things. LOL.. Best regards.. Terry

    A hobby shop would be a good place to start. There is nothing special or tricky about it. I'm not sure you have to use circuit board material like I did. You could use carbon fiber, fiberglass, plastic or probably aircraft ply. Simple wooden dowels or aluminum tubing would work instead of carbon fiber. You could use part of the plastic GoPro mount where I machined the swivel part. A little bit of R/C fuel line and you're all set. You could always stick some sticky back copper or aluminium foil on it for shielding if you think you need it. John

    Ok, thanks, I certainly hope so, I've only been flying a few months and found the phantom 2 used from B & H Photo so decided to jump into a larger bird. The Phantom is a big step up from my Alias, so of course fear losing the thing if I don't watch how I fly and what I attach, was thinking the small Mobius was a safe bet due to its size. Doesn't sound as if your having trouble, so hopefully I'm lucky here to, as the interference doesn't sound as if it's consistent from one bird to another. Oh well I'll keep reading the threads. • @DadHav

    @DadHav

    Mike A Hello Mike. I used double sided 3M tape that is about 1/16" thick. This is a black super high strength tape. You can find it in most hardware stores though, you will notice it's about twice as expensive. I clean surfaces with alcohol before using it and if I remember right I also sanded the soft finish off the Mobius Cam mount. I also have a piece of the tape under the little swivel mount that is screwed to the Phantom. Don't forget you can buy extra mounting parts for the Cam, so you don't have to worry about using one up. Goat, I try them from morning to night along with any other human on earth I would imagine. You may have to enlighten me a little bit with a more qualifying comment. My limited knowledge of Isaac pertains to three laws which explain what happens with actions and reactions to mass as it pertains to movement and stationary objects. I'm sure the laws read on what is happening here but it is just as easy to say vibration transfers to the cmos sensor. We all know that much without reading physics books. You could be helpful by explaining how you would use any of the laws to overcome the problem. Here's an example: The motor vibration is an action and the reaction is opposite sending a wave through the plastic hull, camera mount and finally to the CMOS sensor of the camera along with other parts of the airframe as well. This is expected as explained by the laws of motion, but doesn't help to finding an answer to the problem. My guess was to minimize the Action with balance and get in the way of the Reaction with a shock absorber. I think Isaac would be happy to see us in reference of his material though. J

  • @GoatZilla

    @GoatZilla

    The word "inertia" came from the idea that an object has an "innate property" which resists change in its movement. We know this today as "mass". To get rid of jello, take your camera and secure it to the heaviest object in the craft which can be isolated. That's usually the battery. Then, as one unit, isolate that from the source of vibration. Granted, on your Phantom, your options are a bit limited. But then again, that makes it an area for innovation. The guys flying the more open designs have no excuse.

  • @DadHav

    @DadHav

    10 жыл бұрын

    GoatZilla Well, you certainly know what you're talking about. Ha, no excuses for the flying hardware stores right. What attracted me to the Phantom was the clean lines, and even what I did with this mount seems to be a compromise to the nice looks of the ship. You're right, using heavy objects in the mount system is a key if you can work with it. The mount I built here was inspired by someone who hung a board below the hardware store copter and on the board he had his battery and camera. The board was hanging on braided wire like for hanging pitchers on the wall so the combination of weight and suspension actually stopped the vibration and also gave the mount sort of a gyroscopic affect that made the video very smooth. Hmm, but it was unacceptably ugly. So far this seems to be working. I may go back and rebalance the motors with the cell phone vibration ap and call it quits for a while. Thanks a lot for the constructive reply. I thought you'd be mad at me for mine. John
