As a Tigers fan, I prefer the blown call. How many pitchers have thrown perfect games and don't get remembered? He will always be known as the guy who got screwed

@@DrVarner usually, yes. But in this case the throw beats the runner by 2 steps. If his foot was over the bag about to step on it, that would make more sense for the "tie" if that makes any sense lol

Jim Joyce did him the greatest favor. If he calls that right, it’s a perfect game nobody ever remembers. Now we all talk about it and know it was a perfect game, regardless of the record book

It was a bad call but I don't like the idea of changing something that happened after the fact. (And no, this is not remotely comparable to changing a hit to an error or vice versa--that's bookkeeping. It's not taking something that happened and declaring that something different happened--the end result is always the same, that the batter reached base.)

"1 game for grabbing jersey" you do that to an ump and MLB will give you a week .. or longer

Jim Joyce was not banned from Galarraga games for the blown call. He isn't allowed to participate in those games because Joyce and Galarraga co-authored a book on sportsmanship after the blown call and are now considered business partners.

It wasn’t actually the call that got Jim Joyce banned from calling Armando Galleragha games it was the fact that after the infamous call the two of them co wrote a book about the incident and MLB didn’t want the risk of Bias accusations against him

Jim Joyce was a good umpire outside of that bad call. Which he owned it. If we had reviews back then it would of been a perfect game

That Galarraga one hurt my damn feelings, not even a Tigers fan. I remember that one clear as day.

The really sad part is that out of the thousands of cases in which umpires deserve discipline, these are the only cases of it actually happening. Furthermore, I don’t even think Joe West (Beltre) or Jim Joyce deserved the discipline for the things here. MLB’s priorities are just beyond fucked up. Especially considering that the Mike Winters case pretty much happens every other week nowadays.

West deserved to be disciplined for making a personal attack on a player. MLB didn't suspend Joyce, they just chose to be careful about his schedule, and it wasn't the first time something like that happened. Whether or not it became public, Ron Luciano was supposedly not scheduled to work Baltimore games because of his poor relationship with Earl Weaver.

He didn't get to work playoff games for a few years. With his current lawsuit, I don't think MLB can keep him from working them. At the very least, they can only get away with him working non-high profile series.

There's a few umpires that seem almost jealous of the fame that MLB players get. Joe West wanted a piece of that & Angel Hernandez definitely wants fame & glory he thinks he's deserving of. Instead of trying to be the center of attention by one upping the players, maybe he should focus on being the most accurate & fair umpire instead. If he wasn't protected by his union, he would never be able to continue doing the worst possible job any umpire in the history of MLB baseball has ever done. He's not just missing a few calls to be noticed. He's making the wrong call on a huge percentage of pitches

Umpires seen to think they are the most important thing on the field and their not and I really can't believe that some of these umps don't get clubbed by a bat.

One game suspensions aren't enough. Missing one game's pay doesn't hurt them that much.

a game or 2 or 5 or 10.. a season… not enough. These loser umps need to be fired for being dog water at their job.. if I do a bad job at my work I would get fired -they need to be replaced by Hitrax or something

Everyone rightfully shits on Angel Henandez, but it was Joe West who taught him the bones about umping....West was shit, day in day out!

Angel Hernandez’s three overturned calls in a playoff game cost him the World Series that season, so he was unofficially “suspended” for the rest of the postseason.

Jim Joyce's inclusion is unfair and incorrect. He wasn't banned from umpiring Galarraga games because of the call. It was because the two of them later wrote a boko about the experience and the league didn't want the appearance of any impropriety.

Sam Holbrook should have been banned for ljfe for that blown "outfield fly rule" bs against the Braves in the 2012 wildcard game. Yes, i know it's called the infield fly rule but that ball was nowhere near the infield.

If MLB retroactively took away perfect games when a dp occurred resulting in only 3 batters that inning, then Galaragga MUST get credit for one.

I don't care for baseball (highlights are cool but games are boring for someone with severe ADHD) and it bothers me

If we really remember the umps names, they are not doing their job right.

MLB Umpires do not have a clear evaluation matrix for their job retention. We need better-quality umpires who do not just spread their authority to toss out players. Accuracy first than your emotional regulation second. Grow up MLB Umpires or they need mental health training as part of basic umpire training.
