ML63 M156 Rebuild Update - I Almost Destroyed It

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Figured it has been a long time since I posted the first M156 rebuild video, and I should probably give you guys an update of what has been going on. Still working on detailed videos of the entire process... including fixing what I messed up along the way. Thanks for being patient with me!

About lapping the valves. In these motors, in fact, the valves cannot be lapped. Personally, I always grind the chamfers on the valves and cut the chamfers on the seats on the machine. and I collect it without lapping. If you're interested, I'll tell you why.

As per recommendation of AMG techs and friends who have worked on the M156 before, I lapped them. The affected cylinder now makes 245psi of compression while cold, which is about the same as the rest of bank 1. Well within factory specification.

@@SamAbraham it's about the valve seat material. Beryllium bronze is gaining abrasive. In general, there are many nuances in the repair of the cylinder head. It makes no sense to rub the valves and achieve tightness on the removed cylinder head. when tightening the cylinder head, the geometry of the seats is distorted. It is necessary either to cut the saddles with a false plate, or simply ignore the slight vibration after assembly - the valve seats are being worked on. It's all been gone for a long time. a perfectly lapped cylinder head does not pass the vacuum test on the block. There is another important nuance - the wear of the guide rail. Personally, I have not rubbed the valve for about 10 years. After milling the valve seats chamfers and grinding the chamfers on the valves, no fine-tuning is required. If there is a decrease in compression due to the valve mechanism, I would still not grind the valves, but mill the chamfers on the machine. Another reason I forgot to mention is the width of the working chamfer.

@@motor943 Drove it 30 miles today, and it feels great. Before lapping the valves did not seal. After lapping they did.

What kind of silicone rtv did you use for the bed plate? About to do this job myself and have seen that the best would be anaerobic sealant

It’s a Mercedes specific sealant that must be used for bedplate and both oil pans along with the timing cover. I’ll link it in the next vid, don’t have the part number on hand

Say how did you do the compression test and how would I find out if I have a bent valve also, I have same ml and I’m getting some weird behavior intermittent

Compression tests are pretty standard on any engine you just need the tool that will fit the M156 spark plug diameter (12 or 14mm can’t remember at the moment). But if you have bent valves your car wouldn’t really be running at all without dying, you likely have other issues

Such emotions... I'm not trying to devalue your success, don't think, you're great that you figured it out and did it yourself. When I went through my first motor, the emotions were exactly the same, but now it's a routine, and another wound-up motor causes emotions comparable to those from drinking a can of beer... It has become so commonplace for me. It was only after your video that I thought that I really do very complex and high-quality repairs in the style of pakistan truck. Unfortunately, these are the realities of life in Russia... On my 204, I assembled the m273 piece by piece, and swapped it. I have a video where I assemble the cylinder head, and the lights are turned off, And I assemble it under the light of flashlights))

@@rudy_w210_5 well, yes, a dead engine that is disassembled for spare parts does not care which floor it was put on. Especially the pistons that went to the trash don't care. Unlike you, at least I do something more than tapping on the keyboard. 😉
