I Bought an R129 SL500 with 240,000 Miles

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Yup that’s right, I bought a 1997 R129 SL500 with the 5.0L M119 quad cam V8. I love this car already despite it already giving me issues. Sorry for the technical difficulties regarding the audio but hopefully you enjoy the video! Lots of work to be done, and excited to share my R129 ownership journey with you.

I have a 1999 SL 500 I’ve owned for 2 years now. It came from Florida and is an absolute joy to drive. Getting ready to turn 38,000 original miles pretty soon. This car is definitely destined to be a collector item without a doubt. Triple Black and all original paint and never been damaged this is my keeper.

Super keen to follow your progress. I have a 98 and the rear hydraulics just leaked. I'm familiar with that special tool after many hours of cursing. Wish I had found your video sooner.

Hey a fellow Gaucho! Your right on the money about the facelift R129. Everything about the pre-face lift looks way better, especially with an AMG body kit. But the pre-facelift M119 Engine harness and caps and rotors are definitely issues. Fortunately you can still source pre-face lift 93-95 OEM upper wiring harnesses for the SL500s, and caps and rotors have to be changed every 50k miles or so, but fortunately neither are difficult to do. Look forward to see you redo all the bushings and suspension components and a new fuel pump!

Haha yup! Preface is a much cleaner design for sure, if I can source bumpers and side panels from one I may do that, the current bumpers require a respray at the very least. I might not mind it as much once I throw some monoblocks on. Biggest thing I did not want to deal with is the CIS mechanical fuel injection! New fuel pump is already in and it starts right up, getting ready to do some work under the valve covers soon

Hopefully you find out a fix for the starting problem soon, as an owner to a M103 300E I feel your pain 🫡atleast your car doesn’t have the mechanical fuel injection.

I had a '92 - I hope you don't have the same problems as me - first was the convertible roof - but don't know if yours has hydraulics like mine - good luck

Yup my roof is inop as shown in the vid haha. They're pretty much guaranteed to fail on ANY R129, so its not a matter of if, but when. Around $780 for all the parts from TopHydraulics with upgraded seals to get the roof working as it should, which isn't bad at all

Well better have deep pockets. Older SLs have endless electronic gremlins plus lots of expensive repairs and delayed maintenance. Then the green insulation fails.

I have all diagnostic tools, do all the work myself, and have a post-biodegradable wiring harness car. Have plenty of resources at my disposal including many friends who own W140 S classes, R129 SLs, and early W210 E classes with similar control modules. This car is significantly simpler relative to my other cars.
