AMG M156 V8 Refresh Part 1: W164 ML63 Engine Removal... and Why??

Welcome to part 1 of a multi-part overview of what it takes to reseal an M156 V8, from valve covers to lower oil pan. In this video I primarily focus on removing the engine from my ML63 using a Harbor Freight 1 ton engine hoist and 1000lb stand. I will be replacing every gasket I can think of along with various sensors and mounts along the way, especially those that are much easier to access with the engine out. Stay tuned as I refresh this 120k mile M156!

    I recently had to do this job on my C63 M156. Apparently, its happening more and more with age on these engines. So much respect for doing this. Myself and many others are terrified to work on these cars. Can't wait for more updates!!!

    I had to replace my leaking radiator on my C63 amg on Christmas Eve also. It was not an easy task but I was lucky to get it done. Good luck brother

    Eagerly awaiting part 2 of this series! I must have watched all of your M156 videos over the years. Question for you, why does the lower crankcase section on some M156s have 3 machined "vents" on some but not others? Is it a difference on the M156 between C63 and ML63 applications?

    So much to edit, and mistakes have been made along the way! Luckily nothing too serious, but lots of labor involved as you can imagine. The engine went back in the car successfully, but lets just say I had to take a head off soon after haha. I haven't noticed the vents on the crank case, are you referring to the upper and lower oil pans? The ML63/R63 (and CL63/S63/SL63 if I remember correctly) are all front sump, so they have the lower oil pan toward the front of the engine. E63/C63 are rear sump. So the components below the bedplate are in different locations.

    Orielys and advanced auto parts have free tool rentals for AC recovery, that way you don't waste your refrigerant. Then pump it back into the system.

    My bed plate is leaking as well. I’m interested in doing this job too but I have concerns about it. To me it’s not as simple as just a re sea of the crankcase. You are removing the main bearings and re installing them can create oil pressure problems since they are seated from factory when torqued and change shape when tightened and loosened. How do you feel about this?

    Well, I've already done it and the main bearings were in decent condition. I probably would have replaced them if I were to do this again honestly, but after consulting a few AMG master tech friends, they said not to worry about it and just clean up the crank a little and go for it, which is what I did. I suspect that some day if I ever get myself a shop space and my dad no longer dailt drives this ML, I will probably replace them. For now though, no issues

    подсказка. из 164 кузова проще тягать с коробкой, но без раздачи. она легко снимается на полу. а вот в 166 уже не прокатывает так)) электрическая рейка с задним поддоном портит все)) приходится ронять передний редуктор еще. но тогда с раздачей выходит. А так мотор то еще особо не течет. ко мне обычно приезжает уже просто кусок грязи с двум я дырками. для залива масла и слива 🤣

    Do you know the part number for the intake vacuum connector? Mines is old and loose and im not trying to spend 4 grand just for something so minuscule

    Are you referring to one of the vacuum connections up front? Or at the back of the manifold

    Lots has happened haha, long story short, I made a mistake but nothing fatal. Haven't had time to work on the car as I've been back at school 150 miles away, but the engine has been back in the car for awhile, most parts I needed are already at my house ready to go

    Nothing wrong with that! This is for people like me who enjoy a good project. Not always about cost, although i’m sure for many it is, especially as some of these M156 powered vehicles plummet in price.
