Mk3 Cortina 'PROJECT BRAMBLE ' first inspection

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

First official inspection of this 'rescued form a field' Mk3 2 Door GXL Auto 2.0 ford cortina. I have repaired the brakes and fuel lines allowing me to drive the car. Car has been stationary and in the field since 1983. Its quite incredible it fired up and drive. Bodywork was not bad considering the situation. Could have been much much worse. 32 years of weather has been attacking this car and it still starts. All hail the ford pinto. Bulletproof. NOW BEING RESTORED! Check my films.

I've got as much if not more respect for someone rescuing my favourite car ever as I do for the heroes that rescue and foster cats and dogs and other mistreated animals. My grandad had a 2litre Ghia in a sort of bronze colour. 4 door manual trans' My Mum used to borrow it and we went on holiday in it. Not lying she got it up to about 98 mph maybe 100 for a bit which at the time was super impressive. God it was a beautiful car. Literally my favourite car design ever. Keep up the good work, I hope it lasts forever.

I had a 1973 mk3 2000xl estate which I passed my driving test in, the examiner commented that it was a large car for a test. Really loved that car and did over 200000 miles in her, oil and filter change every 3000 miles but did fit a new camshaft oil feed pipe every 10000. The car was waxoiled thoroughly from new and never had any rust on it until it was stolen and written off. Biggest headache were the rear void bushes, had to have a new set almost every year. Fantastic to see this one being rescued and restored. I take my hat off to you sir.

In 1978 my uncle had a 1972. 2 door electric blue 2000 GT. i remember it had black cloth tombstone seats, the only cloth ones i've ever seen, the first owner was in the Army, stationed in Germany, while there he ordered the Cortina in UK spec, The car came to England when he returned. Rod.

I know this might be one of these 'my dad had one of those' comments, but my dad had one of those. Bronze(?) 2 litre GXL K-reg 4 door, replaced later by a yellow M-reg 2000E 4-door, both with vinyl roofs and both manual transmissions. He was a GP so they both did a lot of miles in the Scottish Borders early to mid '70's. The mechanicals were unbreakable and they never let him down, but back in these days within a year rust would appear on the lower door panels and sills, so the bodywork went well before the engine/transmission. Fascinating to watch. Subscribed to Cortina heaven right here on the PeteC channel.

Years ago 1970 i worked in Ford Parts ..so as you can imagine i know a lot about MK111,s ...i remember doing camshafts and followers ..doing insurance jobs all the body parts ..bonnets ..wings and the part numbers i,m 64 now lol ..bonnets are 16612 ..wings 16005 ..16006 (left and right) . The last car i rebuilt was a MK1 cortina ..i put a new engine in it 1500,, with the 1300 diff you could fly away in second gear lol . Also did Ford Anglia and put a 109 Classic short motor (1340 cc) in it ... which i bought redundant stock for ......£15 in 1973 ...the 1200 head fit on it no problem ..these days cars are rubbish ..nothing but electronics and crumbling alloy ..you cant touch them like the old ones . Great to see this video its worth the rescue... to keep this car alive and amazing how everything worked out after standing so long ..brilliant !!

Terrance well spotted and thank you for the comment. Sorry for my late reply, yes you are right very rare too considerign the orginal colour on this car is Silver Fox which intself was rare on any m3 cortian let alone a 2 door gxl. its automatic and has red interior, again rare, also its a rare crossover model with later wheels Ford Allsports, 1972 K reg built in January. The restoration project is being fully documented on youtube., it follows hot on the heels of my previous restoration PROJECT RUBY, i have a twitter feed (@pno922k) and a patreon (www.patreon.com/cortina) to document everything. I wanted to leave it looking standard but give a bit of kick under the bonnet so I installed a little 289 V8 It sounds very sweet and purrs along

In my first job when I was 18 I was sent off to Leicester for a day to inspect a building site. I had ordered an Escort from a car hire company but when I arrived from the station they didn't have one. I was given a 2 litre Cortina GXL instead. I got in, the instruments were buried deep in the dash, a long red bonnet stretched out in front of me, the engine went vroom - I lost all sense of responsibility and became one of the Cortina Boys! Incredibly I managed to return it intact. I have always thought the Mk.3 was a fantastic piece of styling and they still look good to me. Designed in Detroit, I presume?

This post made me smile. What I'd give to go back to my early childhood when people would dump 60s-80s cars all over the place in car parks, when I guess they weren't worth anything for scrap metal. There was a 70s MK2 Vauxhall Viva and an early 80s Skoda Rapid/Estelle dumped in my local church car park for what felt like years. Used to see them every day on my way to primary school and it made going to church (pre-atheist days ;) worth it, just to grab a badge or two off them each week. I loved them and as a kid dreamed that I could make them work and drive them. One day they disappeared and that was that. What I'd give to go back in time, put them in a garage and learn to restore them with the help of the brains on KZread here. I got introduced to a guy who runs a Ford restoration business in Kent last week and his workshop is full of classics being restored from the shell up. I love the stuff that we used to see so commonly once upon a time. I don't care if it's a 1 litre Fiesta or a cosworth, to me they're all worth something! I love seeing cars like this brought back to life. I've always been into cars but never really messed with the mechanics until literally a couple of months ago when I decided I was gonna watch a few KZread vids and service my cars to save some ££s. I've got a first year MK3 1989 Fiesta outside now that's just failed its MOT on brake work. People have told me to just weigh it in but it seems wrong to kill a working retro car that's becoming more and more rare. So to hell with that, I'll save up my pennies and get it fixed up in the new year. Or teach myself how to fix some of the things. I'm gonna cost it in oil to keep the corrosion at bay (plenty of rust as you can imagine) and look forward to it being my daily driver once we're outta winter. But I digress! These cars are the best.

@@PeteCswampy no sadly I had to abandon here up in Stranraer when she just wouldn't start....full tank of fuel and ready for the final trip home to Penrith. I left the keys in her and the paperwork and had to get a taxi to Penrith....in an even older mk3 estate car.... I've always regretted having to leave her as she was truly a great car, cruise all the way home and hammer around the back roads of the countryside.... We drive them hard back then, as they where meant to be. Keep saving them, they are the best model they made. Charlie

I live in Michigan USA. Back in the 1960's I had A Cortina MK 2 GT 2 door use to road rally in Watford Mi with it until my brother totaled it. I have a lot of the parts from it R/L complete doors with glass, starter in a whole lot of others parts. If you or know somebody that is interested in Cortina parts leave a comment to me here. I am in the Detroit Michigan area in the US.

Lovely nostalgic footage my father had a 1.6 XL in Monza blue with black vinyl roof bought it new in 1973 until I wrapped it around a tree in 1985 and binned it for good. 50 mph crash but car just disintegrated but got out with just broken leg, thing that scared me the most was had to cut myself out as couldn't undo seat belt but lucky I had pen knife in pocket. Sorry dad (if you can here me)

Silver Fox with the black vinyl roof and dark red/burgundy interior, that's going to be a fantastic looking car when she's finished, if you keep her original, and that gearbox is truly amazing for a car that sat for 32 years, the way that drops into gear so quickly and smoothly I doubt if it needs more than a fluid change and filter to be fit for plenty of service. I'll bet that's a genuine low mileage car...
