This is the BEST how to do video with clear and concise narration and why and how something is with the objectives explained. I have never seen this before in a training video. NEVER. Proper marks and kudos to you on that alone. You would think that this man is an educator or training professional. He never loses his cool or becomes frustrated on camera. His calm demeanor and likeability make him a youtube star.

If you have this much passion and attention to detail to restore what is arguably a fairly unremarkable car good on you. Yeah I like the 2 door mk3's, had two of them back in the 80's, one was a yellow 2.0L then a couple of years later I had a black 2.0XL with a bored out engine. I build and race large scale 32cc rc petrol cars, to date I have 7 of them so I want to make a strong shelving unit to house them all then put it on wheels, I'll need a fair bit of box and angle steel, hence the need for a mig. Found your channel via a youtube search for cortina restoration and yours was at the top of the list, oh I'm on episode 30 of Ruby, watching about 2 per day, fantastic!!! totally hooked!

More entertaining than anything on that box over Christmas. Bloody good work friend. I took on a mk 3 in the 90s. Needed a fair amount of welding but a house move intervened. It was a '73 saloon. A bit of a rarity I thought because it was an "L", but finished in the dark metallic green often seen on GXLs. It was the only saloon I've seen with a front bench seat and longer gear lever. Always regretted not saving that one.

@@PeteCswampy I served my Auto Electrician apprenticeship at Pye Motors in Lancaster when it was on Parliament Street, started in 1978. I bought a Cortina L reg Mk III trade in. Original colour was Yellow, it had been badly sprayed Red. That had the vinal brown interior with the front BENCH seat with the old umbrella handbrake. The handbrake didn't work so I decided to remove the bench seat and the old umbrella handbrake and fitted 2 front Black velour seats out of a GLX and a floor handbrake. Being an apprentice I used to spend all my lunch break taking bits off cars in the scrap yard across the road from us. I swapped the L dash for the GLX dash and fitted and wired the 4 gauge centre console also from the GLX I ended up retrimming the car with GLX Door Cards etc. I even sprayed the brown metal dash panel Black, nearly gassed my self in the car with spray paint fumes lol. The silly things you do when your a kid lol. One of the apprentices bought my special Cortina, mind you he also bought my Special MK I Escort off me previous to the Cortina, One of the treatments I did on the escort was to fit the gauges out of a Corsair GT the speedo and rev counter went in the MK I dash binnacle and the temp, fuel, oil and amp meter out of the Corsair went between the 2 circular face vents it looked so cool lol. I then got my first loan and bought an MK II Capri L in black that got the special treatment also lol.

Looks like its flying together! mad mike will be watching these with envy!! as you know by now cleanliness is key to a proper weld. I started to just use (zinc) weld thru primer on one side of the panel, due to the fact it interferes with the weld to much, if you just put the zinc on one of the panels (the side with the holes in it) you have a clean surface to plug weld to, but you will still have one layer of zinc sandwiched between the two panels, or don't use any and then just wick some into the seams with a paint brush after its welded or and use compressed air blower to blow the paint into the seams. There really is no perfect way! just food for thought.

maybe that front panel is a catch all, designed so it fits mk3,4 and five?, ive seen that with mini panels, one for all versions and modify it to fit. is that little widget on the battery tray to support the corner of an expansion bottle, or washer bottle, i mean it might not even be used on your car, but if the same panel is on all models, it could be off the 2.3 ghia or any model really.

In regards to pads V discs on grinders: I'd be inclined to use a grinding wheel to take all the weight out of welds initially... Then change to a grinding pad to finish up... 👍 It's up to you...

seems to me when it had the front end damage might of been a three way and this was the car in the middle, it was later on when the mk4's were out and they only had mk4 parts so they made it fit that or it was all they had left in the spares bin

top work there, can I just say something about my experience with spot welding and i'm not criticizing your work I worked for many years in a sheet metal work factory doing spot welding ,and I found the best welds were to have the welder on high amps and have the timing/duration short as possible because long durations burn up and over heat the tips , also the tip shape is very important and needs to kept in shape [regular cleaning and shaping] I found the best size/shape at that the welding tip be tapered down to 6mm flat at contact area for both top and bottom tips, this was on flat sheet .8 mm material , not sure if you can regulate adjust your amps on that machine ? the one in the factory was adjustable both on time/duration and amps, as I say i'm in no way condemning your welds they look fine just giving you some of my experience .

Thanks for the video Pete, she's looking bloody awesome!! Is there a modification or design 'enhancement', other than rusting issues you would change about the MK3? I know you're aiming for an original as possible look, but with your years of experience, what would you change?
@PeteCswampy
5 жыл бұрын
wow , great question. I certainly would not alter the styling. In terms of how it drives, no change, im struggling here.......errr...im so loyal to the concept i cant hink of anything, i know that sounds crazy, perhaps the interior light, it was a little weak, but then all cars were, oh, yes, i got it, the heater blower, you have to boost the motor to get decent airflow and noise reduction, so yes heater blower!!!! I have maanged to graft in a high power blower unit and keep it looking factory (on ruby) this mod, funnily enough is NOT COVERED in any of the films, its something i did later on, the heaters and fresh air on Ruby are now howling fast!!! but QUIET, the orginal airflow system (designed bty DELANIAR) was lacking, a fact backed up by press reports in MOTOR magazine. I cant think of much else, but its a great question!!!! pete

@PeteCswampy

thanks Adam, respect mate to any panel beater and welder, what is zintec~? curious and always want to learn. what do you think of braze for cvery small pinhole repairs, just fired the oxy up and its made a great job of plugging some small pinholes, nice finsih, the clean metal loved the braze. I used pre fluxed rods and just fed the braze in, the pinhole vanished, flatted back and its solid. what you think? all the best, Pete, Cortina City
@RW-bi2rp

Zintec is zinc coated steel, you can leave it lying around in the garage for years without it rusting, it looks like the coating that you have on the shell (after being dipped) has that matt grey finish to it. Its about the only stuff I will use, as adam says, its great.

Your attention to detail is fantastic, I especially like the way you show us panel welding in great detail. I am restoring some farm machinery with lots of panel welding needed . Your tuition has helped!

This is truly excellent. If I was a millionaire (I'm not) I would ask you restore my car.

There really is no perfect way! just food for thought.

you do amazing quality work, but I cant see how you can even come close to being able to break even on one as rough as this bramble bee was.
hi pete car looking good
maybe that front panel is a catch all, designed so it fits mk3,4 and five?, ive seen that with mini panels, one for all versions and modify it to fit. is that little widget on the battery tray to support the corner of an expansion bottle, or washer bottle, i mean it might not even be used on your car, but if the same panel is on all models, it could be off the 2.3 ghia or any model really.
In regards to pads V discs on grinders: I'd be inclined to use a grinding wheel to take all the weight out of welds initially... Then change to a grinding pad to finish up... 👍 It's up to you...
Zintec metal is galvanised coated smooth grey finish, just clean up the area your welding, the normal metal rusts in hrs if not treated, with zintec last years, best thing is to look it up? Good luck with the project.
@todddenio3200
5 жыл бұрын
be careful not to breath the fumes from welding galvanized metal. it is extremely toxic.
seems to me when it had the front end damage might of been a three way and this was the car in the middle, it was later on when the mk4's were out and they only had mk4 parts so they made it fit that or it was all they had left in the spares bin
Do I hear the sound of the mighty AC/DC and back in black in the background? 😍
top work there, can I just say something about my experience with spot welding and i'm not criticizing your work I worked for many years in a sheet metal work factory doing spot welding ,and I found the best welds were to have the welder on high amps and have the timing/duration short as possible because long durations burn up and over heat the tips , also the tip shape is very important and needs to kept in shape [regular cleaning and shaping] I found the best size/shape at that the welding tip be tapered down to 6mm flat at contact area for both top and bottom tips, this was on flat sheet .8 mm material , not sure if you can regulate adjust your amps on that machine ? the one in the factory was adjustable both on time/duration and amps, as I say i'm in no way condemning your welds they look fine just giving you some of my experience .
@PeteCswampy
5 жыл бұрын
thanks duggy!!! i can adjust duration but not amps, i find if tips are clean and metal clean it seems to take well
nice to see under the battery plate/ panell.and the mountings.i need to remove mine ,,to klean up..to be shure nothing bad is happing on the underside..hope to just drill the6 top welds..and carefull bend it aut to klean and paint..and bend it back..and redo top velds..have the engine inn..so no Space for horensontal drilling

Hi Pete, loving the work. I understand Wigan College has a good Media course, perhaps you could enrol Cortina Kitty on the camera module to help things along? Although you may need to edit out 'bottle-top football... 😉. Btw what was that little metal tang for?
@PeteCswampy
5 жыл бұрын
Alastair, thanks, I think the metal tang was the battery overflow drip tray, a little tube that comes out of battery lets fluid leak out and i think this bracket catches it out of the tube, just a guess
Thanks for the video Pete, she's looking bloody awesome!! Is there a modification or design 'enhancement', other than rusting issues you would change about the MK3? I know you're aiming for an original as possible look, but with your years of experience, what would you change?
@PeteCswampy
5 жыл бұрын
wow , great question. I cant think of much else, but its a great question!!!! pete
I'm also a panel beater and welder, I use zintec metal for repairs much better that standard steel
@PeteCswampy
5 жыл бұрын
thanks Adam, respect mate to any panel beater and welder, what is zintec~? curious and always want to learn. what do you think of braze for cvery small pinhole repairs, just fired the oxy up and its made a great job of plugging some small pinholes, nice finsih, the clean metal loved the braze. I used pre fluxed rods and just fed the braze in, the pinhole vanished, flatted back and its solid. what you think? all the best, Pete, Cortina City
@RW-bi2rp
5 жыл бұрын
Zintec is zinc coated steel, you can leave it lying around in the garage for years without it rusting, it looks like the coating that you have on the shell (after being dipped) has that matt grey finish to it. Its about the only stuff I will use, as adam says, its great.
