In this video I show you how I make a simple cold process olive oil / castile soap with added carrots. Olive oil makes a very mild & gentle soap that’s suitable for sensitive skin. Carrot puree gives the soap a natural yellow color.
Remember to wear proper safety equipment when making soap. Gloves and eye protection are required.
I calculate my soap recipes with this lye calculator: soapee.com/calculator
○ Cold process castile soap recipe with carrot puree:
Total batch weight: ~860 g
600 g olive oil (100%)
100 g distilled water
70 g cooked and pureed carrots
10 g citric acid
83.2 g lye (77.2 g if not using citric acid)
(31.2% lye concentration(including the carrots), 5% superfat)
8.4 g lemongrass essential oil
3.6 g ginger essential oil
Cure the soap for at least 4 weeks before using it on your skin. Castile soap benefits from a longer, 3-12 month cure.
○ Citric acid information
When citric acid and lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap.
A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water.
These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap.
A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases.
Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level.
How much citric acid should be added to soap?
Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight.
How to use citric acid
Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye.

    I love Castille soaps! I have some that are aprox 1 years old and they're so gentle. I even have a nice lather with them. I made a carrot and hemp seed oil loaf tonight, I can't wait to try it. This is stunning and I will have to try this method of adding to the oil. Beautiful and Thank-you for sharing.

    Thank you so much🥰 Adding sugar helps with bubbles but carrots already contain sugar. Low bubbles is pretty much what you get with 100% olive oil. With time the lather does get better, but it's still more creamy than bubbly. I prefer a bastille recipe with 70% olive oil and 30% coconut oil.

  • @tellervo.

    @tellervo.

    3 жыл бұрын

    There's no set ratio, it depends on how much water you want to use in your recipe. For this recipe, the carrots make up about 40% of the water. Since the carrot puree is not 100% water I used more water than I normally would. If you have a very high water vegetable like cucumber you could replace the water with it completely. I hope this makes sense😁

    I must ask, how do you get the essential oil fragrance to 'stick' in your soaps? I can't get the fragrance to remain no matter what I do, I have used ecocalc, and different brands of oils.

  • @tellervo.

    @tellervo.

    3 жыл бұрын

    Firstly, I tend to stay away from essential oils that are know to fade really quickly, like lemon and orange. I also think that essential oil soaps are a different thing than fragrance oil soaps and accept that some, although not all, will have a lighter scent. One option you might want to try would be to anchor the essential oils by adding some clay and letting it sort of swell a little before adding it to the soap batter.

    Great video, I love carrot soap!! Carrots are a great natural colorant, although, as someone mentioned, there's nothing like red palm oil to give you a gorgeous, long-lasting yellow color. Really liked that you add citric acid to the soap recipe, I NEVER had issues with DOS in soap again, after making it a mandatory ingredient. By the way, I'd advise to give minimum 8 weeks to cure castile soap. Less than that and the soap might dissolve too fast in the shower. Cheers!!
