Part One - Making Soap With Tallow + Studio Tour | MO River Soap

Hi everyone! I'm Holly and in this video I give a small studio tour, make a lye solution, measure oils, and make two batches of essential oil soap! I do share the recipe used and include informational tidbits about soapmaking, but this is not intended to be a tutorial. Part Two is coming on Saturday!

The change in packaging and in soap bar size makes sense with what's going on with the economy at the moment. I'm looking forward to the follow-up video. I'm sure if you put them up for sale on your site, they'll most likely fly off the shelf...lol. I know I'd definitely buy both bars. Tallow? I'm all in!

I started making soap with tallow and lard and I find they make the best soap. I know everyone is different though

What is the difference between tallow & lard

  • @moriversoap

They are both rendered fat. The tallow can be from cattle, deer, bear, etc., and the lard is from a pig.

Have you ever made soap from bear fat? In Elizabethan times in England, it was very common to use bear oil as a hair styling product. (For those who couldn't afford bear fat, dog oil was available. That was what happened to the strays rounded up by dog catchers back then.) I assume it must have some nice qualities for hair and skin?

I used 3% in this batch. It's calculated off of the oil weight but I considered part of the water portion.

That's so sad that you experienced that. Many people use animal fats in soaps. I have never had any negativity from it. I have a new tallow soap video going up today.

Yeah, I think pretty packaging is so overrated the true beauty is the soap or whatever. people can always wrap with paper than pretty tissue paper over the thicker paper.
