Create unique and vibrant soaps with this red oil

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I show you how I made soap with sea buckthorn fruit oil. It’s a beautiful and unique oil that can be used to create naturally colored, vibrant soaps. The oil is pressed from ripe sea buckthorn berries and it is high in antioxidants and carotenoids.
Sea buckthorn fruit oil has a very unique fatty acid profile that makes it great for soap making; it is high in palmitic, palmitoleic and oleic acid. Unfortunately, the color does bleed through, making the lather orange, but it doesn’t stain the skin.

Sea buckthorn soap recipe:
Recipe calculated with soapee.com/calculator
Oils:
90 g sea buckthorn fruit oil (15%)
180 g olive oil (30%)
30 g castor oil (5%)
90 g shea butter (15%)
60 g cocoa butter (10%)
150 g coconut oil (25%)
Lye solution:
135 g distilled water
10 g citric acid
88.9 g sodium hydroxide (82.9 g if not using citric acid)
(38% lye concentration, 5% superfat)
Additives:
10 ml fragrance oil
Cure the soap for 4-6 weeks before using on your skin.
○ Citric acid information
When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap.
A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water.
These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap.
A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases.
Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level.
How much citric acid should be added to soap?
Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight.
How to use citric acid
Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye, or make a separate solution of citric acid and distilled water and add to the oils.

Sea buckthorn in where I live is very expensive and it’s mostly used in cosmetics and not for soap making. We use sustainable red palm oil to make even much more reddish orange soap. It doesn’t stain nor lather is orange like that. Btw, vitamin E is not going to survive saponification process. So no matter how much vitamin E the oil may contain, the soap will not have any vitamin E left in the soap. What survives is the antioxidants oil soluble colors like carotenoid (red) or chlorophyll (green), which in turn when body absorbs coverts to vitamin E in your body. So it’s not the actual vitamin E of sea buckthorn oil, it’s the carotenoid itself.

I wouldn’t make claims of what survives or not the saponification process, just a suggestion. I have made soaps using teas with different botanicals and I can tell you that something survives the saponification process based on the fact that they lather much better and they feel really good and smooth on my skin, something I don’t get if I make the the same but omit the teas. Same thing when I added other additives like honey. So for this reason I encourage everybody to test it out and see for yourself!

What a beautiful soap. I love the color and the finish came out smooth and consistent. I truly love your videos and find your approach very interesting. You seem to have a connection to the process, which, in my opinion, is the reason your soaps turn out so perfect. Thank you for sharing your insights.

I have gotten some Indigo and rhubarb powders and made some wonderful soaps and my friends and family really love them and I love the lather, but I only use 20% coconut oil as it dries my skin to much, I'm 60, so I need moisturizing lol! I also started using citric acid which I've never heard of using till I found your channel, thank you again. 😊 ❣💞 Stay safe.
