Mitsubishi Triton 2024 review - dual-cab 4x4 ute test (inc off-road) | L200, Athlete, pickup, bakkie

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Is this new Triton pick-up truck a breakthrough moment for Mitsubishi?
The brand has put years of blood, sweat and tears into the development of this new-generation 2024 Mitsubishi Triton, which -- unlike the last model -- has been rethought from the ground up.
That means a new chassis, new wheelbase length, a bigger body, stronger towing capacity, better on-road dynamics (with Australian tuning for the suspension and steering!), more off-road capability, a more powerful twin-turbo engine, and a seriously reworked interior with more space and comfort than ever before.
It is, seriously, a competitor for the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, and still maintains a price advantage... but the price is now higher than ever before.
So, is it worth it? And should you buy one? Watch til the end for my verdict!

Credit where it's due, pretty good review. Watched others this morning that said the rear had some jitter on the road over bumps - kind of a given when it's unladed. My drive experience with the GSR was opposite to what others have said, and found it to be compliant enough for me not to notice. Your review has been less nitpicky compared to others, so kudos for that.

You need to take every review with a pinch of salt, too much bias I reckon, especially from the Ford and Toyota reviewers. You buy what you want, go and drive it yourself. I have driven Toyota for many years and will stick with Mitsi for this one, buying the GSR

Matt, firstly great review, I liked the offroad bit to see what this thing can do off the beaten path and how child seats and the rear air con works in this(no one else really talks about that sadly. Secondly you forgot to mention the Cannon in the alternates, its bigger than this and it has a larger and more practical tray(its got a step ladder to get in there plus its dampened ) and the isofix situation in the rear is more usuable(plus it has under seat storage).

technically 4H is what would be described as 4x4 On-Demand, yes its confusing as Mitshibishi should just call it 4A as Ford does. If you have super Select II and want AWD mode then just switch to 4H and you will be in AWD mode but you would have to do it every time you restart. Whatever you do, don't put it in 4H-LC on non slip roads.

I have know alot of d max owners and navara owners who have written off and destroyed their trucks on wet slippery roads, Having an option for full time awd is something I won't compromise on, if you come from driving a car and is now looking at trucks , Chances are you came from a front wheel drive car, it's not the same , trucks are mostly rear wheel drive biased , easy to lose control around corners and on wet roads since the back is lighter it's easy to spin out on wet roads. With full time awd , you won't have this issue. Fwd car and rwd ute handles totally different , for a beginner to utes, get a full time awd one like the triton

Whilest a good improvement from the previous model, they should have done more , since its a brand new model, but looks like they are only playing catch ups, and even could not do a full catch up. 150 kw n 500 nm, though just a number, but definitely plays in the mind of the buyers. A damped tail gate, proper rear AC vents for aussie summer, rear disc brakes should have been added, and they could have added a bigger centre screen too. That's where ford trumps others. Ranger has a great packaging, which easily overshadows its reliability.

Thanks for a nice, balanced review. I like that you don't hold back. And dark headlining is godawful! You mention child seats, and I'd be keen to hear what a mother thought of elevating a chunky 3-years-old up into a child seat, and where she'd put the pram whilst taking the vehicle to the supermarket when this commercial vehicle is given family duties. I'm also wondering if Mitsubishi is really reaping the benefits of its alliance with Nissan/Renault, because the Outlander has garnered some excellent reviews, and now the Triton looks to be heading in the same direction though I'm not in the market for any diesel-engined vehicle with a rear suspension that was old in my great-grandfather's day. I'm old enough to recall Mitsubishi releasing some excellent vehicles and then leaving them on the market for far too long without upgrading them - perhaps due to a lack of money to develop a new version - and I hope those days are in the past because when Mitsubishi gets it right, it is _really_ right.

Be careful what you wish for. I have a 22 GLX+ and fit an "afterthought" Alpine head unit that sits offset from the dash and can tilt, which helps reduce sun glare. The big screens fixed into the dash cannot be adjusted and are difficult to see in harsh sunlight.

is it needed though? if the final drive ratio is right there is no need for an extra 2 over-drive gears, also as Matt said the transmission appears to downshift on inclines, that is actually better as the engine is not labouring in 6th gear, on the other hand it would make for an ordinary drive if the gears are shifting between 6ths and 5th which suggest not enough torque (or in this case turbo lag) to pull top gear.

My Rexton is Euro 6 diesel with reduced NO2 but C02 emissions are above 200g same like other Euro 6 engines. If the government is only concerned about carbon emissions then what is the point of Euro 6 diesel?

The elephant in the room is always that all the damned Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara, Toyota Hailux, Ww Amark and all the other small Pickups are that their cabins are not big enough and therefore the cars are WAY too expensive because they are simply useless as family cars. The cars cost the same as SUV cars and are also more expensive than SUV cars, but you only get half a car compared to the SUVs. There is simply too little legroom in the back seat and the cars are also too narrow. A man of 183cm cannot sit comfortably in the back seat of any of those pickups because there is NO LEG ROOM. So what the hell are we paying for when we can't have our 17 year old sons and daughters sitting in the back seat. THE CABINS ARE TOO SMALL AND WE GET TOO LITTLE CARS FOR THE PRICES OF THE CARS. Why isn't anyone talking about the damn problem with the small cabins. No legroom equals the fact that the cars cannot be used for families with children aged 15. Too little legroom.

As having the previous top spec as a company vehicle it was OK. The front and rear suspension just didn’t feel as if they were working together. Nice feel from the front and truck like from the rear that felt better when carrying weight. At least the front end design was statistically safer for pedestrians. Just don’t understand why they are making these wider with a much higher front end like the American ones, where the pedestrian deaths from these has gone up! Same for push bike and motorbike riders as a slopping front end means collision with pedestrians and the like will have them go over the bonnet. The oversized tall fronts simply push them forward and you then drive over them with less than ideal vision for children. I won’t be asking for any of the new ones for this reason.

I wonder why manufacturers bring new model vehicle out and yet fail to recognise simple things that other manufacturers fit. You mentioned the rear gate not being damped, the lack of lighting in the load area, cheap and nasty type tub liner in stead of a spray in one, no cover and unusually, one top tether making it more onerous to fit multiple child seats. I like the styling but pricing and failings let me down in a purchase decision.

I'd say no. If you've got the coin for a Ranger, go a Ranger. I'm making the choice to not spend Ranger wildtrak money and Getting the GSR. I have driven it and personally it was a fantastic ride and surprisingly better and tighter than my 2020 Ranger PX3. Is the suspension at the next gen ranger level - no, but it's damn close in my opinion. Have seen another reviewer say the rear jiggled over bumps, no shit. That's what happens with an unladed rear. I didn't find it to jump around in my drive, so really one must ask, what tire pressures were they running on the review car? I know if i got around 3-4 psi too much, my Range becomes a little jiggly. Anyway everything is subjective these days. As much as I wanted a new gen Wildtrak, I think i'll stick with my GSR order as I don't think I'm getting a lesser driving experience. Yes, there are some things the Triton should have that it doesn't, but that will drive the price further up - people are already complaining about prices across the market, and Mitsubishi will do just fine where they have priced themselves. Don't cancel, go to a dealer on the weekend and take one for a drive. If they have the outgoing MR model, take that for a spin, then jump into the new MV to get a sense of how it's changed. It'll be worth your while!
