Like everyone else, here's my interpretation. This encapsulates living with functional depression perfectly, at least in my experience. To keep yourself from wanting to die, you start to give yourself something tangible to live for, like an event you want to go to, a goal to achieve, etc. This unhealthy cycle repeats, once that event has passed or that goal is reached, you have this need to find something else to live towards, because without it, you can't give yourself the need to live. Eventually, there are no more goals to strive for and nothing new you want to do, you've done everything that is worthy enough to give you the reason to live. That is when you move onto people. Having someone as your reason to be alive is so incredibly damaging to both parties, not just yourself anymore. "I need you to love me more" suggests that this is person is your romantic partner, of course, but how the chorus continues illustrates how burdening it can be to have a persons love be why you live. The repetitiveness of the lyrics along with the seemingly chaotic piano and increasing tempo gives this anxiety and urgency to the listener, much like how you'd feel if this person does not love you more and more and more then you'll lose your reason to live and you'll be left with nothing.

This makes so much send. I was trying to understand what all of the imagery meant like how she rode in with someone and left alone

I feel like she is speaking directly to us, her fans. She is grappling with trying to improve her mental health and finding healthy ways to ease her crippling depression while also being a performer and dealing with her adoring fans that shower her in love which can de-rail the healing process as it is an extremely potent but temporary high that leaves you empty when the curtains close. Truly healing is hard work, it is tempting to just bask in the artificial love of our parasocial relationship with her but just like drugs, its a cycle and the high is never as good as the last so you keep chasing that first high, practice poses you've performed a million times, you're a puppet on a string going through the motions. The solution? Love me more audience! MAYBE if you love me more it will be enough to drown the emptiness out. But at the end she shows she is self aware and all though the words are saying "I need you to love me more!" she is staring into the camera, shaking her head no, telling us, her fans that that's not what she needs, "Please don't do listen to me. This song is my Ego speaking but my trueslf knows the only true happiness comes from doing the hard work to find love internally". But depression is the thief of motivation and self-care is hard and draining. So she's back at square one, depleted of all energy to work on herself so you see her getting back on that motorcycle, the cycle begins again and she surrenders herself once again to the sacharrine, hollowing, conditional love of her fans. not sure how much of this is projection through the lens of my own crippling depression and how much is actually what she's trying to say but this is my interpretation.

you’re definitely keen. i think the second person “you” found in a lot of the lyrics in laurel hell could refer to past lovers as well as fans and critics. all these unresolved emotions of wistfulness, desperation, frustration, and desire that she’s always written about in terms of romance have finally matched with her relationship with her musical audience. and its discomforting and unusual to realize it, but that realization dresses the whole album. also i hope you find a way out of your depression, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

This song is beautiful because it functions on so many levels. On the one hand at face value it’s about a relationship, wanting someone to be so in love with you, with such an outpouring of emotion, that it “makes you whole” or fills you up, and drowns out your insecurities. On the other, it’s about needing to love yourself more. The entire video she is interacting with iterations of herself: she’s driving herself on the motorcycle, she’s asking the doll her to let her in, she’s mimicking the poses of her drawn self. She wants to change via self love, but doesn’t know how.

its about her relationship to artistic/ self-worth under capitalism too, similar to Working for the Knife. She's broken on a hospital bed while she watches herself getting applause after a performance on TV. She's lost in a hall of piano keys, but they aren't they "key" to the house where her performative self lives (the puppet refusing to let her inside wears her 2018 live performance outfit). She's re-performing artistic renditions of herself, slamming her face into the painting to get flowers rained on her. Is she begging for selflove, or is she asking an audience to validate her existence? a part of the lyrics is "when I'm done singing this song I will have to find something else to do to keep me here." It's a common turmoil for artists under capitalism. You put yourself (especially your trauma) into art as a mean of expression, only to have it commodified-- valued by money and clout, instead of being valued for everything that you are

Had a similar experience throughout all of elementary school. Bullying stopped since I moved to a different part of town and started middle school, but I was a super shitty person and started to just sorta bully and annoy others, was super toxic to my friends plus I had a ton of internalized homophobia so that was fun. Now I'm in HS, changed as a person and got better but I have severe social anxiety and I'm scared to approach people because of all the mistakes I've made. I started skipping classes because I'll just have panic attacks from the littlest thing and then I just start sobbing 💀. Hope things are going better for you Kylie!

my way and how i interpret this song : i think this song is about staying alive to feel loved, or have a relationship or to be loved. "i need you to love me more" means, to love someone more and more everyday so everyday is even more worth to live, "drown it out" is to drown out the bad things in life. the other person mitski will find, is the next person she will be in a relationship with, because the other person already gave all their love and now she has to find a new lover so she can stay alive and feel loved. "how do other people do it", "another day to come" is just her asking herself , how other people can live with only a certain lover and a certain way of living, and the repetition of every day. how can people live like this? this song is about someone battleing the life they're living and the suicidal thoughts or tendencies by relationships. even though they wanted to start a new life ( as seen in the start, "i will be a new girl") but they failed, so now the repeat their old coping mechanisms and patterns so they find "something else to keep them here", bc finding someone else. sorry if this is repetitive or messy, that's just my way of seeing it!

Your interpretation is completely true, if that's what you see in it. I would say it's about self-love. Which is what everyone needs to learn, before being able to love another. There are a couple of signs in the video that hint to it. 1. The scene in the television, when people are throwing garbage at her while she is performing on stage. This and the lyrics are kinda suggesting that her career is over and she has to look for something new in her life. 2.The puppet (clearly herself) that she is trying to interact with. ...Not letting her in the house, when she can't find the fitting handle to the door. Maybe something off with her communicating to herself? Who knows. 3. The battery pack in the burning newspaper roll. It's coming from the past so maybe she is burned out... 4. The Cleansing in the white room. Again, she interacting with herself in different (power)poses. Fighting with herself. Lying on the floor trying to recover energy. Turning the cold shoulder... Maybe denial... And what not. All stages of the long, hard and (sometimes) painful process, when you go through a crisis and try to find back to your (new)self... But in the end... She's back on the road. And the red (love) traffic sign switches to green. I adore that heart btw! All this is pure self love to me. Not just buying yourself nice things, doing sports or being in a relationship. All fine and good, but truly loving oneself means to tackle the bad stuff as well or you'll never be satisfied. I just heard about mitski yesterday for the first time (found a great video of Boy Jr supposedly from tiktok doing a marina and the diamonds impression mitski style😍) and I must say - this is some intelligent, impressive women and her videos are just uhh. Sooo good.

I agree with your interpretation until at the end. But Respectfuly thoguh😅. Mabey it's just her mind playing tricks on her and trying to convince her she will fall into these coping mechanisms. Hence there is a doll always reminding her of her bad traits, like feeling small, helpless, and repetitive. It turnels her vison. But as she says love me more we see her with more pictures of herself. Mabey she is trying to get out of it by reconizing her habbits. (Hence also her copying herposes.) Then we see her stuck her head through the all. She could be trying to thikk outside of the box. And with the water she is reflecting on it. Until finaly she leaves. And what do we see a heart. She has battled her deamons herself and has learned she needs to love herself too. Sence hownwe see her with the jacket riding off alone. She could meet with her lover. But I feel as though it has a more hopeful message. But that's just my optimistic mind.

this is a fucking masterpiece. i love where’s she’s going with the album.

I personally think it's about her career in music business, like the first few lines indicate she might have chosen wrong thing to pursue. She kinds of regret it and feel tired in the business (this parallels the Working for the Knife lyrics), but want people to "love her more" so that she can continue making music. That's my interpretation, though.... Anyways, I love her music so much and I hope she makes it big and not feel too overwhelmed by her sudden rise in popularity recently.

A lot of retro 80s stuff only goes so far, and often the slick production or some other element brings you back into the present. the way i see this, this song is talking about validation and being a “gifted” or “special” person. “i could be a new girl”, referring to how the pressures so much, and you hate it and want to get rid of it, but you can’t. “but when i’m done singing, i’ll have to find something else to keep me here”- nothings enough, you have to constantly put out content and proof that you’re who you’ve been labeled as for others, or you lose everything. “there’s another day to come”, no matter how good you can keep up the illusion that you’re “special”, you have to do it over and over because everyone expects you to, and it’s so tiring. the chorus for me is obsessively repeating how once you’re in that spot you want validation, and want it more and more because once you start getting it you can’t be without it. wanting to be the “special” or “gifted” kid, but the pressures so much and it’s exhausting to keep up, not to mention trying to compete with others, hence the lyric “how do other people live, i wonder how they keep it up”. there’s so many more lyrics i feel like build on this, but it’d be too long. just my personal interpretation :)

EXACTLY bc its like your self-worth is completely based on getting validation from other people that you ~really are~ special or that your work really is good, but then you lose track of the person you are without the achievements and approval

I love how energetic and fiercely expressive her videos are when it comes to movement. She's always doing all sorts of stuff and I just can't help but feel feels.

I recently came to terms with my diagnosis of BPD. This song instantly reminded me of it. "But when I’m done singing this song I will have to find something else To do to keep me here" It just reminds me of the complete emptiness I feel when my life is not about other people or I am not loved. It reminds me of how uncomfortable I feel when my sister hasn't said "I love you" for an hour. I feel completely empty. Every time she says it I feel full, but it's temporary. "How do other people live I wonder how they keep it up When today is finally done There’s another day to come" It just never ends. And I know I shouldn't be this way. Like she says, it's an itch I want to scratch.

i know that it probably wasnt the intended meaning of this song but it also hits me right in those bpd wounds. like im begging the people around me to love me just a little bit harder to keep me feeling full just a little bit longer

@@morgandenton4565 I don't think there's anything that indicates it wasn't the intended meaning of the song! I don't want to diagnose people but A LOT of Mitski's music has BPD vibes. She's a very private person but I'm sure she has a pathology of some sort.

I have dependant personality disorder, personally, and I feel that honestly. Like there's just this incessant need to feel like your life is full of love and you're cared for. Especially at the end when Mitski changes the lyrics to "I need you to love me more, love enough to clean me up." There's always a part of you that knows you shouldn't love so irregularly. You want someone to fix it for you. Clean you up. With so much of her music it's just so raw from the perspective of a personality disorder. "I will be the one you need, but wait, I can't be me without you" from Geyser. The raw emotion when she blurts out "I miss you more than anything" in Francis Forever. The first verse of Why Didn't You Stop Me. The earth-shattering loneliness of Nobody as she descends into just repeating the titular line over and over again. "Do, Me, Ti, why not me?" from Washing Machine Heart. So much of her lyricism has helped me to cope and find comfort in her music. It reminds me that I'm not alone in what I'm feeling. As terrifying as it is to have DPD, it isn't something I suffer from on my own. So much of Mitski's music not only helps me come to terms with the way I interact with the world, but to view myself as more human for it as well. TL;DR I love Mitski

I love her enthusiasm and energy. What she strives to convey. Her view on life.

Ok does anyone else notice at 1:30 that there’s a different melody in the left ear and in the right ear. I was listening with only one headphone on and noticed it then. The right ear is high pitched and is lacking most of the piano notes, while the left side has all the piano

there's something i really love about mitski's choreography in her music videos. i find a lot of music videos nonessential to the listening experience, but with mitski's i do think you should try to watch them at least once if you can to really get the full measure of what she's trying to say. there's something about her use of movement and dance that, no matter whether it's uncomfortable, erotic, funny, pained, joyful, or sad, it's not superficial. there's meaning to it.

I am a guy and I love Mitski, this song of hers specifically. I have been through a lot and relate to her songs, I proudly say I love Mitski because regardless of gender, songs are art and art can be appreciated by anyone and everyone.
