Sammy endured so much hate when he was in the army himself but, he used that to make him basically one of the greatest humans that ever lived. Yes he had his flaws but, who doesn't. There isn't one time I did not smile when I watched Sammy perform even to this day thanks to KZread. Thanks for posting anything Sammy as his legend will live on.

Sammy could sing, dance, act and even ride a horse. This was one of the better of Dick Powell's mini movies

Dick Powell is a legend! Not to mention, Sammy Davis Jr. with James Edwards! this is outstanding

James Edwards was a very talented actor and writer. It is too bad he did not receive better roles . Roy Glenn was also a superb character actor. That voice was incredible. Thank you for this wonderful rare download displaying black talent in a western. As I recall growing up as a child, I loved westerns but there were very few blacks in them despite the fact that about one in four cowboys in the old west was black.

Sammy Davis was the total package . He was on stage from age 3 until he went home to God. There is a beautiful monument at Fort Leavenworth commemorating The Buffalo Soldiers. Its build into a waterfall with multiple mounted soldiers in action. General Colin Powell was responsible for it being built.

Did the Buffalo soldiers express the same sentiments as the Europeans? I would like to understand the prevailing position of the Buffalo soldiers as people "caught in the middle" so to say. Thanks

@@galesayers Wrong! Poitier was a carbon copy of matinee idol James Edwards, Belafonte was a pale copy. Edwards was blacklisted by Hollywood because of his outspoken politics and his openness for dating white-women. In other words, he was way ahead of his time.

One of those Dick Powell t.v. series that were usually fronted (as in this one) by the prolific actor/producer himself until he became ill with cancer in the early '60s. His death early in 1963 made the front-pages, even in obscure provincial newspapers.

Nifty-little story of the U.S. Cavalry. There should've been far more of this kind of programming back in that era. I blame it on the advertisers who sponsored these shows & to whom the networks were beholden. Who's to say we'd've run the networks any differently, had we been in charge at that time? As in so many of the old-westerns, it's absurd to see the portrayal of Native Americans as speaking fluent-English; nevertheless, I still very much admire this episode, a good-yarn that captures a feeling of general-realism, despite relatively-harmless inaccuracies. I always try to remember "the play's the thing"!

'Harmless inaccuracies'? It is coloured by some one's own brand of war paint. So it paints with the paint of bias. So if it was just a few little 'Harmless inaccuracies' then the murderers wouldn't need statements such as the Last bastion of Law and Order, Justice & Civilisation. Please explain how mudering the occupiers for their home land is 'Justice' or a little harmless inacuracy'?

I abhor the absurd way Native Americans were treated in movies & TV programs of long ago but I think we can cut this particular episode a little slack---not much but a little.

In 1960 there was a TV show called, "The General Electric Theater". One of the weekly shows was called, "The Patsy", NO, not the Jerry Lewis one but a drama with Sammy as a new army recruit. He ends up in an all white platoon and the guys immediately start giving him a hard time. Then as the story progresses, Sammy keeps trying to do his best and get along but to no avail. One day the troops are out practicing grenade throwing and one of the guys who had a practice grenade, a dummy one, pretends to pull the pin and accidentally drop it in the middle of the guys. Sammy sees the grenade hit the ground and he jumps on it to save the others from the shrapnel. The guys first start laughing and then..............as Sammy realizes what happened, he slowly looks around and the guys stop laughing realizing that he was trying to save them even though they had been so mean to him. They all start feeling really badly about the joke. Of course, things change from that moment on and he is honored in the platoon.

I'm no expert but I don't believe Apaches would have attacked across open ground like that.

First off; They show all the men shooting at the Indians during the first attack. They all have hand guns.........no rifles. When they go to see if the Sgt. is ok, they are carrying rifles. All 6 men attend the funeral............WHO's on look out! Then; Nice of the Indians to wait till the funeral was over before attacking. When the two Indians approach for a "pow wow", Sammy, who was ready to just shoot at the three approaching Indians that were not even giving a war cry, here, he unbuckles his gun belt to talk to them. They could have knives under their vests and the one guy was carrying a war lance. Sammy's waist is about a 12 in this show. Then, the Indian in charge tells the soldiers that they will wait an hour for them to send out the Comanche. Who is the Indian's watchmaker? How do they even know the concept of "time"? It must be an Indian handicap to have such bad eyesight as not to be able to see that "Sgt. Sammy" was on that horse. He should have painted his face like a good Indian would have. That would have at least given his troops more time to get away. Also, why did the other guy ride straight into the Indians when he went for help? He should have left at night and in the other direction. Then, he could have circled round to the fort. I believe the name of the fort was Fort Fart. You know, cause the army eats a lot of beans............. Beans and coffee, a recipe for disaster.

Why wouldn't native Indians have a concept of time? Time had been part of most societies awareness over the previous 6 thousand years. Myans and Aztexs also knew of time. Nomadic tribes who migrate for reasons of seasonal changes were migrating because of time, in one sense. There had been hundreds of years of contact with Europians before the USA War of Independance. So the average native would have to be a real retard to know nothing of time. But that is not meant to imply that the concept of time was a gift to natives from Europians as they already had their own sense.

@@MikeGreenwood51 Yes, the Indians did have an awareness of time but in days and months as they watched the sun rise and set as well as the phases of the moon. The South American tribes like the Mayans & Aztecs carved large stone calendars but it made it hard for them to tell small intervals of time like a minute and especially an hour. When you consider that strapping a stone "calendar" to your wrist to use as a time piece, it makes it difficult to ride and shoot.

Thanks for showing this film - first time for me and I enjoyed it. All good actors to boot!

And some Native Americans may say that that was a dam good thing as well. They were locked in repeating tribal wars killing each other. Many were tribal murderers, robbers and renegade theives who killed and raided other more peacefull settled tribes.

They didn't call *themselves* the Buffalo Soldiers. It was a moniker that the Aboriginal Turtle Islanders (America) gave them because of their dense, curly hair - like the animal they venerated. It was a term of respect and reverence; they were considered to be brave and worthy opponents. They were given more due by the tribes than the European descended troops. Many of those soldiers were Aboriginal themselves yet their heritage was stolen and obscured. They have always used melanated peoples against one another. --------------

It is raised in Danny Glover's TV film, Buffalo Soldiers, Sidney Poitier's Buck and the Preacher, and Rafer Johnson's Soul Soldier. In fact, the tagline for Soul Soldier is this: "They were black troopers who fought and killed the red man for a white government that didn't give a damn about either one!" I'd thought the story was ok. I'm from the same town as James Edwards. He would be a superstar if he were still alive. Hollywood has come a long way since 1959. He was a bit of a rebel,he didn't like playing in some of those movies.

If a 'dreadlock Rasta strolled in from Africa'! Why would he be anything to do with The Buffalo Soldiers of the film or Buffalow Bill. There happens also to be Buffalos in Africa along with water Buffalo. But clearly the film is depicing events in the 1800s. So those Buffalo Soldiers in the film predate both.
