During the 2023 Spring breeding season, our cameras captured the moment when eight Eurasian Great Tit eggs hatched. The story begins with the emergence of the first chick from its shell. It can be seen pushing and pulling as it tries to break free. It uses a tiny tooth called an ‘egg tooth’ to make an opening in the shell. It then manoeuvres itself until it is free.
Nine eggs were laid in this nest, but only eight hatched. It’s not uncommon to see one of two eggs fail to hatch; this is one of the reasons they lay so many. The likelihood is that the last egg was infertile.
Unfortunately, only three chicks made it to the end and fledged.
