Ministering to the LGBTQ Community: A Personal Journey with James Martin

Jesuit priest and editor at large of America Magazine, Father James Martin, SJ, talks about his personal journey ministering to the LGBTQ community. For Martin, working with people on the margins, walking with the excluded, has always been part of his Jesuit life. Early in his career, he began writing about the LGBTQ community because he felt these were people in the church who had very few people to advocate for them. Then, after the 2016 nightclub massacre in Florida, he was deeply concerned about the lack of public support from Catholic bishops which inspired him to write a book, “Building a Bridge,” emphasizing the simple but life-changing tenets of respect, compassion, and sensitivity.
Martin is the best-selling author of “Jesus: A Pilgrimage, The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything” and “Learning to Pray.” He has written for many publications, including the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and he is a regular commentator in the national and international media. How do Christians justify their hate and prejudice when Jesus preached love? If you feel you're in any place to judge, can you cast the first stone? I'll pray for you 🙏

Just my two cents. (And it is probably only worth two cents.) I think the problem with James Martin and Pope Francis for the laity in today's Church is the issue of clarity. Throughout history the Church has always tried her best to provide clarity to its members. From the beginning of church regarding circumcision and the books of the bible to modern day regarding the Latin Mass and the issues of LGBT community. James Martin and Pope Francis seem to create more confusion instead of more clarity. This is why there is so much frustration in the Church today! For those that go to daily Mass who are active in their parish and to hear daily news that only bring more confusion to issues that should be clearly defined only gives the laity a 'shaking of their heads' confusion and seems to be a purposeful attempt to sow confusion instead of giving clear answers. Jesus treats all sinners with LOVE. He also says "go and sin no more". I hear James Martin and I hear half a gospel and can only think of Paul Harvey saying, "and now the rest of the story" that other half is never said.

I'd have probably stayed more religious if the church didn't make my life hell growing up and cause me to hate myself at the time for who I was and how I felt. I'd like to see the church be more accepting and perhaps one day I can walk in without having to be afraid of those around me. My sins are my own as are yours and only god shall judge me

Slowbro, I’m sorry you had that experience. So much hate has been peached and practiced by those who take God’s name in vain. Please don’t equate the sins of those who act hatefully with the God who is love. Don’t let some dumbasses drive you away from God.

You need to talk to a real righteous person with real salvific faith (not anyone in this video that's for sure) who can help you overcome your sin and the errors that are telling you your sins are a private matter. Scripture teaches us that no sin is a private matter within the Body of Christ. Those of the world will seek to keep sin in darkness for their own comfort such that they can continue in the sin and the works of inequity against God...but the Holy Spirit does not inspire such an approach to sin within the Body of Christ as is taught throughout scripture. To be in the Body of Christ, you do have to gain the power of Christ over your sin such that you no longer fall to it. Christ/God/Holy Spirit can do that for you but you have to truly believe, which is the first step in overcoming our sinful nature. No one who is walking in the Spirit of Christ is accepting of sinful ways.

If Miss James Martin is catholic priest, he is definitely no saint. his talk is contradicting: welcoming lgbtq community and chasing out faithful Catholics from the church will never be condoned by the saints.

Jesus preached love, not hate and fear. If being lgbtq is in a sin, I pray that on judgment day Christ sees the good one's done and not their sins. If the lgbtq are condemned for finding love, for your sake, I hope he forgives you for your persecution of them, as it is not our place to judge.

Father Martin is saying God made a mistake in making a man in a woman's body or a woman in a man's body. Father Martin needs to read the Bible again and pray the Rosary continuously and incessantly instead of showing all the time on television and talk shows because the TRUTH is God never made a mistake in His CREATION. By Father Martin's endorsement of the LGBT, he is saying God made a mistake in His creation, he is a devil's advocate.

Why do you assume a married couple is having sex? It seems that you think the only reason to get married is to have a moral sex life. I think you are jealous. Sex is not that important to many couples. Love is important.

It's funny and no surprise see people's comments on religion issues, like "I'd have probably stayed more religious if the church didn't make my life hell" or "If god is a just god, there simply would be no words of prejudice", etc. Most often time people would like to have a personal, subjective religion and understanding of God to fulfuill, to fit their own passions and vices, but they're wrong. And this priest is gay, besides leftist and cultural marxist, and do not at all represent the Church. He should be ashamed to support gay people, because gay behavior is directly contrary to the milenar teachings of the Church.

Luke 17:1-2 [1]He said to his disciples, 'Causes of falling are sure to come, but alas for the one through whom they occur! [2]It would be better for such a person to be thrown into the sea with a millstone round the neck than to be the downfall of a single one of these little ones.

He continually says 'LGBTQ' community as though there was a community of interest. He seems to accept this as completely unproblematic, accepting without question a history where TQ has been politically and ideologically tacked on to create a community of shared oppression where no such shared interest exists. Orientation is not the same as the wish to transition. And the homophobic, misogynistic, child harming extremes of TQ are becoming increasingly apparent. I wish he would use some Jesuitical discernment about this.

So we have a heroic heretic misleading his flock. Mr. Martian, how are you helping these people get to heaven when you are holding their hand to hell by your affromation? The road to heaven is long and narrow. On your judgment day when YOU are asked : What did you do to guide my brothers and sisters to my kingdom? If I were you Mr. Martin, I would start thinking about your answer NOW!

Maybe the Bishops didn’t say “gay or LGBTQ” because they saw the victims as human beings and not their sexuality.
