Gay and Christian, No Contradiction | Brandan Robertson | TEDxLSSU

NOTE FROM TED: This talk represents the speaker's personal beliefs and interpretation. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
In this talk, I will weave together my journey as an LGBTQ+ Christian pastor who began within the evangelical tradition, was forced into conversion therapy, and after that failed to ‘heal’ me, I moved to reconcile my faith and sexuality. After spending a decade studying the Bible and Christian theology, I was surprised to find that the anti-LGBTQ+ interpretations of Scripture were wholly inconsistent with a historical approach to the Bible, and discovered a long tradition of queer people within the pages of the Bible and throughout Christian history. In this talk, I will share my thoughts on why homophobic interpretations of the Bible are plainly incorrect and how LGBTQ+ people can reclaim their place as rightful members of the community of faith. Rev. Brandan Robertson is a noted author, activist, and public theologian working at the intersections of spirituality and social renewal. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

God laid out the foundations of our design in Genesis, our sin blinds us to that perfect original design, and until we are "born again" we will not be able to see the kingdom of God. (John 3:4). Don't take it from me, nor this man; both of us are lost sheep, read the Gospels and see how God has revealed himself to us, and beware, do not read the good news looking for it to conform to you. I agree, building on this; although orthodox traditions are _great tools_, it's only when they are used as such, with present and past context and Gods greater wisdom in mind. But neither should Christians become the other extreme, not gathering together in unity, as some have resorted to in the past; as this is stifling as well. One can learn much in solitude, with only the holy spirit and your own contemplation's. But I've learnt that the greatest growth is from practical fellowship, and being encouraged by others love for our heavenly father.

Homosexuality is only a problem for us if it's being taught that it's acceptable within our religion. According to the Bible, we are not to judge those outside of the church, but those within the church who teach falsehoods are to be driven out and expelled. People can do what they want in their own homes, but if you enter our house, you have to follow the house rules. That is very fair. You are free to leave if you disagree with the house rules. Divorce is prevalent today but it's not the place of the church to uphold its rules amongst non-Christians. Those who believe in divorce (unless it's due to adultery) are not Christians. Jesus said "Whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another commits adultery.” If you disagree with Jesus, you have removed yourself from the church.

The man's recognition of the woman as one like him and thus as suitable is the explicitly stated reason for marriage. Think it through. If a man is only capable of recognizing a man, for precisely the same reason, he should marry a man. "Fornication" referred primarily to men using female prostitoots. Same-secs behaviour was not in scope, although I would hazard to say that the same ethic applies.

I'm familiar with the Hebrew of Lev 18:22. For clarification, it does not contain the terms you referenced. However, I suspect you are thinking of the LATIN translation of Lev 18:22. That would likely contain those terms because LATIN is where Paul TRANSLITERATED 'ArsenoKoitai' from. This is why the word is not found in ANY GREEK LITERATURE other than Paul's writing and those who discuss Paul's writing. I reached this conclusion several years ago when somebody I knew from a seminary noted that scholars didn't know where the term came from. I hypothesized that maybe, because Paul was a LAWYER (law being an interest of mine), he needed an EXACT legal term that did not exist in the Greek. So, I checked the LATIN (the language of Rome that had conquered the world at the time Paul wrote this term), and there the roots were. I have written about this discovery and have a much stronger theological model than you could imagine about this very subject matter. Once you see what I discovered, you'll never look at translations of the Scriptures the same way again. Regarding the many contrary comments I've read below; -Those 'Christians' scoffing at your analysis are actually blaspheming in matters they don't understand & doing the very thing Peter warned that lawless men would do with Paul's writings: Destroy themselves & their listeners. Who is being excluded from Christianity? Only one type of person, he who rejects the sin payment paid in full by Jesus Christ Christianity isn’t about one particular sin aka homosexuality, no it’s about any sin is contrary to God’s holiness As per scripture: “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” ‭‭James‬ ‭2‬:‭10‬ ‭KJV‬‬ Even if you manage to keep from 99.9 sins and sin even once you will be separated from God because he is Holy aka that is to say without sin He cannot allow even one sin into heaven, just look at what one sin has done to earth, how much pain and suffering and destruction has surfaced from one single sin, this is why to accept Christ is to accept God and to reject Christ is to reject God Either Christ paid your sin debt you’ve incurred thus your soul is sin free by his sacrifice or you will pay this sin debt by your separation from he who is Holy aka God You decide!!!!

One who is broken and contrite before God is a person God will not turn away but one who justifies there sin before God will suffer the penalty of all sinners without saving grace. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.

@@Octvaerum I've heard that argument a number of times, over the years. It's true they don't hate the individual (Christianity doesn't hate anyone because of their weaknesses), but the rest is a false argument and I'll explain. If someone you cared about was driving home on a road that ended in a dead-end and a cliff, would you try and convince them to stop and turn around and get on a road that actually leads home, or when they said, "don't stop me. This is a nice easy road and I'm comfortable and I finally got my driver's license and this new car. Are you trying to prevent me from enjoying my drive? You're not stopping others from driving. Why are you picking on me? You must hate me!" If Christians truly hated those with same gender attraction, we'd keep our mouth shut and just let them drive off a cliff. But we can't. Being a true disciple of Christ means we must love and care for everyone and many of those experiencing same gender attraction are our family members of loved ones. We care enough about them to want to do all we can to convince them not to drive off a cliff.

The Bible is literature in which one can learn of unconditional love, tolerance, forgiveness, and living your best life. It was written by man in the context of its time. I do not think it should be cherry-picked for verses for the purpose of weaponizing the language to exclude this or that group. The call to followers was based on the ability to welcome all and lead others to the path of forgiveness, love, community, acceptance, selflessness, and honesty. We would be dishonest to focus only on homosexuality or a few other sins when there is inherently nothing sinful about it . Quite honestly, it’s sad to see Christians focusing on certain things when far greater injustices exist. You will do a disservice to your creator for turning others away from this path.

The early church began to identify as Christians because it was just about the only thing some of them had in common as God began to call people from all nations and groups. The word “Christian” is a sweet term and reminder of our commitment to follow Christ and not the world. In a sense you do “have to be” a Christian in that you must be a follower of Jesus.

Where in this universe did that come from. Jesus is the center of Christianity and him to follow only. Sounds like you're a follower of brandon instead to make that statement. Everything brandon teaches are lies. He's admitted he's not a Christian which is a follower of Christ and that his beliefs are based around Christian beliefs. That right there is a alarm going off. The main people who agree with him are those who want to go against Gods creative order and still be accepted by him. A homosexuals behavior goes completely against what God ordained and there's no other way. I never here brandon use the bible to prove his theology he uses his opinions, preferences etc but no Gods word. So if it's not the God of the bible it's a false god

You can say whatever you want about Brandan. I think he has the right to do and say as he wishes. With that being said. He will reap what he sows. And he is bending truth and the word of God to propagate his twisted version of Jesus and God to fit his needs and ideas. At the same time fulfilling the prophecies of the end times. The false teachers that will come to deceive many. There is one of them. Beware of this man.
