From homophobic to out and affirming, LGBTQ+ Christian advocate | Aubrey Brolsma | TEDxHopeCollege

NOTE FROM TED: This talk represents the speaker's personal beliefs. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Everybody has a journey to find themselves. Some are painful. Some are joyful. Aubrey Brolsma, in this TEDxHopeCollege talk, details her journey with faith and sexuality, finding herself amongst the paradoxes. She reaffirms her faith and lives out and proud in her queer identity. In order to combat religious trauma and alienation, we must discuss how acceptance can happen every single day. Acceptance doesn't have to be so hard fought. Lives can be saved and relationships can flourish. Aubrey is a junior at Hope College studying history and classics. She is from Noblesville, Indiana. Aubrey wanted to be a speaker because she wanted to talk about something that could change minds and save lives. She is also involved in Prism and Emmaus Scholars. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    Ignore all of these so called Christians to their hateful rhetorics. The Bible has been translated many times, even for homosexuality in 1946. For some reason marrying the same gender is worse then murder and sleeping with underaged children (looking at YOU, certain pastors). The backhanded responses in our community is unfortunately led astray. This was a wonderful TED Talk, May God bless you in His light ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

    There is a film about the translation in 1946: the mistranslation that shaped culture... and it has riled up a lot of christian churches without having seen it... I really hope it has the impact it seeks, to heal divisions in the church and bring those in pain towards the light.

    Although I agree with the majority of this message, I disagree with how it is presented. It is possible to love someone without accepting a sinful part of them. We are ALL sinners and Jesus loves us fully despite this. This is why He died for us. He made a way for us to have forgiveness. Its still on us to accept Himand to change outselves to be more like Him. That being said, I proudly affirm and accept the LGBT+ community. Being queer is a gift and no one should make you feel ashamed for this. Being queer and acting on it, embracing it isnt a sin. It's a blessing.

    To any queer people who have given up christianity because of condemnation in the church, I encourage you to please dont give up on Christ. He doesnt view you as wrong or sinful for being queer. The church has been at fault for this wrongful bigotry. Please try to find an affirming community of believers to share your life and experiences with. It may be hard, but it's getting easier every day as more and more churches are becoming educated and learning to accept you.

    Her point was not to refute the claim that "the bible condemns homoxesuality" but to inform you of the harm such a position does. People have suffered greatly and even died as a direct result. As she said at the end, there are plenty of resources that explain what you need to know. There's also a new book out, concise and easy to read, by Jonathan Tallon. Please also be careful about misapplying scripture. The tickled ears are of those who justify wrongdoing, like those who give in to humanity's basest instinct of suspicion towards those who are different, who thank God they're "not like that tax collector", who like to oppress the vulnerable. It's not about those who promote love.

    Research on this topic leads nowhere. The politics surrounding this topic are so deep, objective research is not being done or at least being widely publicized. The speaker is wrong, but I understand her. The world doesn't know what to do about lgbt, neither Christians nor queers themselves. It is definitely a sin to act on those feelings. People don't understand how the average queer person is negatively changed by acting on their sinful desires, probably because those who speak out against those sins are silenced. I do believe translations issues occur. But not in like several separate places in the Bible. Homosexuality is referred to, what, six times in the Bible? So how could all those six places be mistranslated? The Bible is a tool, not something to be worshiped, but the vast majority is also true.

    You've been down a hard road. I can't imagine what it's been like. But as an atheist, I'm disappointed with the path you chose to cope with it. You remodeled your view of God until he approved of what ever you happened to be. As if the all-powerful God of the universe were that pliable and subject to your wishes. As an atheist, I step back and look at the Bible teaching on LGBTQ people and I've ended up agreeing with the evangelicals' view. You are what you are, and the Bible says what it says. Neither should be warped to accommodate the other. The solution I see is a break between the two. Abandon the Bible whole cloth. Give up on the concept of God. No more compromises. I know, you have so much invested in Christianity throughout your life. You wanted so much to believe in a loving God. It's so hard to walk away from something you've devoted so much of your life and emotional commitments to. How can you admit you were so wrong after all this time? But reality and nature don't care about your mental commitments. Facing up to the fact that you were wrong all along would be the hardest road of all for you to go down. Can you do it?

    I know the verses in the bible that condemn against homosexuality. However, You have to take into consideration, that bible is also an historic book, so it was written by people. At the time, homosexuality has mostly been forbidden, which is why paul talked about it so negatively in his letter to romans. So I'm not sure if everything that the Bible says should be taken literally as god's word, cause it was still written by people and times were different back then.

    Must a Christian be sinless. Can we only be Christian if we have no sin, must we be perfect in every way without flaw or without sin to earn the love our Lord.

    Hey to who ever reads this! God does loves as who ever u but still if u are in sin he would urge u to repent but if u dont then he can't do anything Cuz its ur personal will, and LGBTQ+ is hated by God for all those who dont know Paul writes it in Roman's 1 do read it and see for urselves, and hope we all know what God did for Sodom and Gomorah, Guys if u didnt know this and is caught up in this sin, dont worry still u have time to repent and better do it now Cuz it's the right time, God is still there wating when u would come back, but dont misuse that time is there and I can still enjoy, God's love is everlasting but so is he a jealous God and ya so hope u guys understand and again God doesn't like LGBTQ+ as God made human as man and women not man and man or women and women, marriage is a Holy covenant and do not spoil it....I pray for ur deliverance and healing! Amen God Bless!

    Read your bible and pray in Jesus name. Ask to be led by God and to not deceived. Spiritual warfare is real and the Prince of the power of the air wants to keep you in allegiance to him. He wants you to continue being of the world. Pray for guidance. Put your pride aside and submit to the Lord.

    Romans 1 - New Testament 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

    you see this is why you need to be educated from the Bibles from 1576 💀 your being deceived by a Bible that was written by the government official.. this is why you go deep into context and read more than one especially the original KJV or the Geneva Bible or the dead sea scrolls...
