We just came down Mineral Creek from Engineer in a stock 4-runner. Some good size rocks on a poorly chosen line bent up my running boards, and the shelves are certainly not for beginners. Some good holes and water crossing above poughkipsie trailhead... What a blast!

My daughter and I had just moved to Cortez. We rented a Jeep Wrangler and got lost in the rain on this trail in 2000. Never saw another vehicle ever. Not bad for first timers!

It’s pretty cool. First time I’ve ever ran it. We’ve always hit the Alpine Loop trails from Silverton. It’s cool that it had a couple bonus lines and it’s more than just a county road 👍🏻. Thanks for watching!

We had driven that morning to ouray and the trail we had wanted to do was closed down for a bike race. So on the way back we decided to do this in my brand new Jeep Wrangler and being my first not beginner trail it was surprised but we had fun and only one oh crap moment on a shelf road where it had some of it eroded and was not wider than my tires this was back around 2017-2018 time frame

Going up is challenging for sure but coming down from Engineer is a completely different level. BPF 10 (butt pucker factor)

Cody! This was mid-October. It was below freezing when we started in the morning. Great time to be there. Way less people on the trails. Just hope for now big early snowstorms! - Geoff

That narrow ledge would get my attention! I was on the road today but heard there was some snow in the Rockies......do you run any winter trails? Great vlog again.

Thanks Tom! The shelf road here wasn’t bad at all. No obstacles on it and it was a little wider than a lot of the other shelf roads. We got about 7” here in Castle Rock so sadly the high country trails will be over with for the season! We will probably hit some of the lower elevation trails like China Wall and maybe Liberty by Penrose. We’ve only been to Moab once in November so we’re going to go in a few weeks and hit Elephant Hill. We ordered a roof top tent so there will be more trips planned for sure!

Thanks Tom! We’ve never had one and that is the hope! So many times we drive 3 hours to a trail, wheel all day and then drive 3 hours back home so I’m hoping it will be great for that! Do you have one?

Honestly me or my wife have never even set foot in one. Camron convinced us after this last camping trip. We ordered the Free Spirit Recreation High Country 80”. It is a full king size bed 🤴😂😂😂. Should be plenty of room for me, my wife and the kids. I will let you know how it works out!

Can you come back down to Alpine loop start the same way you go up?

Yes. There are multiple routes to take.

Did it in a Forester this October...okay...took me 5 hours, but....just sayin' the signage at the Animals Creek end of the ride needs to be firmer than "Four Wheel Drive Recommended".

Nice! You honestly don’t need much of a rig to hit a lot of trails, especially with a good driver. Most people’s rigs are way overbuilt for rudimentary trails anyway - Geoff

Yes. We started at Hwy 550 and went to Poughkeepsie Gulch. The sun was brutal right when we got to the shelf road section 🤭

Ran it the other way from Engineer to connect to Ophir.

Sweet. I want to run the full length next year. We ran Poughkeepsie to the wall and then the local Jeep club came down and had locked the gate at the top. They let us play around on the wall for a little while and then we had to head back out the way we came

reckon a stock Colorado Z71 can do this trail?

Yes. The FJ cruiser in this video was stock at that time. It ties you into all the other awesome alpine loop trails!

You bet! I’m happy to help out! Take this trail and then hit Engineer Pass and then go to Lake City and come back to Silverton on Cinnamon Pass. I can’t wait to get back out there this summer!

I would say for the most part, yes. To be sure, go to the San Juan National Forest webpage and look for the MVUMs (motor vehicle use map). These maps are very detailed and show where dispersed camping is not allowed. All of those trails down there are excellent!!!! - Geoff
