Mind-blowing facts about Uranus | COSMOS in a minute #23

Ғылым және технология

Uranus is the coldest planet in the solar system. Temperatures here can dip as low as -225°C or -373°F. Besides that, it has a very dynamic atmosphere. Wind speeds on Uranus can exceed 900 km/hr or 560 miles/hr. One of the most unique features of Uranus is its extreme tilt. Most planets in our solar system are tilted on their axis to some extent, but Uranus is actually tipped on its side by about 98 degrees! This means it essentially orbits the Sun on its side. Due to its unique axial tilt, Uranus experiences extreme seasons, with each pole getting around 42 years of continuous sunlight, followed by 42 years of darkness. It is also one of the least explored planets in the solar system, with Voyager 2 being the only spacecraft to have passed by it.

    Yes, the Tilt is essential, enabling wind speeds to increase, thus sweeping the sphere of detritus. Without it, blockage occurs & things slow down, intensifying the roastings & extending the freeze. At that stage, a doctor is needed.

    From the Report of the IAU/IAG Working Group on Cartographic Coordinates and Rotational Elements of the Planets and Satellites (2000), section 3: The rotational pole of a planet or satellite which lies on the north side of the invariable plane will be called north, and northern latitudes will be designated as positive. The planetographic longitude of the central meridian, as observed from a direction fixed with respect to an inertial system, will increase with time. The range of longitudes shall extend from 0° to 360°. Thus, west longitudes (i.e., longitudes measured positively to the west) will be used when the rotation is prograde and east longitudes (i.e., longitudes measured positively to the east) when the rotation is retrograde. The "invariable plane" in question is the invariable plane of the Solar System. By contrast, the usual convention for quoting obliquity is to use the right-hand rule (fingers curl in direction of rotation, thumb points north). This is inconsistent with the definition used to determine the north pole but people seem to prefer having the rotation period always be a positive number.

  • @Thor8u

    @Thor8u

    Жыл бұрын

    So basically (how I am understanding this) people don't like it when the planet spins "backwards" relative to all the other planets. If it is upside down then it isn't spinning the opposite direction (retrograde), it's "just upside down." From another source: "Since 1982, the International Astronomical Union has defined the north pole of a planet to be the pole that lies north of the ecliptic plane (the plane of the solar system). Uranus’s “north star” happens to be Eta Ophiuchi, which is about 82° from the north ecliptic pole on the sky. To an observer looking down on this pole of Uranus, the planet’s rotation is clockwise, which is retrograde (backward) from the way most other planets turn. By this definition, no planet’s north pole is ever tipped more than 90°. But you do have to mention, in addition, whether the rotation at that pole is direct or retrograde to specify it properly. The 98° tilt, still quoted in many textbooks, comes from the fact that Uranus’s equator nearly coincides with the orbit planes of the main satellites, and the planet rotates in the same direction in which they move. As orbital elements are defined for planets, satellites, and comets, the inclination can have any value from 0° to 180°. Either way, Uranus’s rotation is retrograde when you look down on the pole lying north of the ecliptic - the one now called (by convention) the north pole." - Roger W. Sinnott

It is the stinkiest, compromised of gases in the atmosphere that make its awful smell 5. It is the least visited in the solar system, the only one to visit was Voyager 2.

Without it, things slow down and blockage occurs, intensifying the roastings and extending the freezings. Return to the Tilt or face complete shutdown.
