Thanks for this one. This was the exact comparison I was looking for. Honestly, through my own research and accord I had already decided that the M12 would suit my needs. While heavy into the M18s, I also use DeWalt and Makita in their respective 18/20 volt lines as each have their own advantages in certain tools for me. This would be my first foray into the M12 platform so future battery purchases would be made and open up some inclusion opportunities for other m12 products. A multitool had previously been thought as something I could do without, like those years I thought the same about a sawzall which I cannot imagine not having now. I can see the advantage of having a multitool in certain situations on the builds/fabrications I do. I was in the process of purchasing the M18 version as a gift and had thought to ask the visiting Milwaukee rep about the comparison between the 12 and 18. His response was to look at me like I was stupid and walked away to do something else. Oh, well. Can't win 'em all or let someone else's bad day define mine, lol. To everyone at VCG and the viewing gang members, Merry Christmas and stay safe!

****THE M12 OSCILLATING TOOL HAS A KNOWN PROBLEM**** First, I have many M12 and M18 tools, as well as a few oscillating tools, including two M12 fuels(first and second gen) and one M18 fuel. I stopped using the M12 OMT because the inside battery housing will destroy batteries! The vibration will chew up the battery ear clips that allow it to snap into the housing. Once they start chewing, the condition only gets worse. It's been the same thing for both generations. Once the tabs start wearing out, that battery will no longer snap into the housing support, and will easily pop out under even the slightest stress or vibration. Been using the M18 ever since. I have too many good M12 to allow the m12 oscillating tool to destroy my batteries. I wish Milwaukee would develop a new battery clasp/mounting system for the M12 batteries.

Really good comparison video, I’m all in on team red myself, so I did pickup the M12 Fuel OMT a few weeks ago, for pretty much the same reasons you came up with. Have the previous non fuel M18 but wanted the less vibration and higher speeds the fuel offerings had, as well as slightly more compactness. That and saving the $80 was nice too. Not disappointed at all with the M12 Fuel, a great tool to pickup. Now I just need to find a sale on the Milwaukee blades in that compact case!

The 12vfuel lines are the best on the market for class and out compete most 18v brushed and brushless. That being said the 18fuel lineups power is insane but the 12v delivers just enough plus the weight loss in tool size, makes the m12 the best to buy for me..except for a few tools here and there, hacksaw, vaccum etc

I truly appreciate this clear, balanced, apples-to-apples comparison. Like commenter Tim, below, I am about to buy my first Milwaukee oscillating tool but had NO idea how to choose between the M18 and M12 versions. (I have both battery systems in other Milwaukee cordless tools.) Why the company makes no effort to explain the differences between these two configurations strikes me as unprofessional and irresponsible. Fortunately, you stepped up and did the job for them. For this amateur carpenter and his meager budget, the M12 is clearly the way to go. THANK YOU!

Thanks for the video. Great info. One tid bit that I think was missed, or perhaps a no brainer, is that due to the high price of the batteries folks should consider buying the model that fits their current battery supply if shopping on a budget. I am personally stacked up with M18 batteries, so the M18 model will be my go to simply for that reason. I just replaced the my small battery pack for 89.00, and they only go up from there. It's all preference, but I personally don't want to travel down the 12v road of battery purchases to save 80.00 on a tool. For me, it would be a 9.00 hit based solely on the price of the small 89.00 battery. Thanks again for the great comparison video.

A reminder for content creators concerning work safety... Any tool with moving parts vibrates, even drills. But when it comes to things like jackhammering, using Multi tools or maybe flatting the ground with larger vibrating machines, or above all: the vibration tool no. 1: the concrete viber, vibrating the air out of fresh concrete, making it more compact. Thing is with vibrations, they are extremely dangerous. They damage your nerves if used for too long. Joints will also get fucked. I would simply like to see reviewers of tools like this take into aspect that if you use the tool for longer times, the less vibrations one is Always the winner. Also, dont forget that there are anti vibe gloves for tools like this as well! In many countries, there are established rules on how long and frequent certain tools may be operated by one person. You can't build if you're Dead. Safety first. Be safe and mindful out there, I am recovering from a snapped stretch joint in my thumb. Im a professional carpenter and I refuse to use this tool without rest for more than 30 m at a time, max 2 hours per Day. And even if the tools is used that frequently, something has gone wrong. All this said, this is DEFINETELY in my Top five favourite tool list as a pro. Peace

Thanks for the comparison! I ordered the M18 since the bare tool was one sale for just $10 more than the M12 bare tool, I've seen others test the auto feature and it actually seems nice and I will just use my 3ah high output on it to save a bit of weight. But for me most importantly, because I have CECS syndrome in my right forearm, even if the vibration is marginally better, that's the tool I will buy.

Super comparison, thanks. You confirmed my thoughts with real data. I replaced a Gen 1 M12 OMT with the M12 Fuel version and was amazed. I had ordered the M18 Fuel Gen 2 OMT but when it arrived, decided it wasn't likely to do much that the M12 couldn't do, and it was bigger and heavier, so I returned it. FWIW and without having actually used the M18 version, I wonder if it might be a little harder to control on detail cuts than is the M12 due to the increased angle of oscillation. On vibration, I wonder if the bigger battery is helping the M18 version to feel like it's vibrating less?

Been in the construction field over 39 years so had the chance to try many different types of cordless tools. If I would say one thing it would be Quality control It’s amazing how so many companies forgotten about it. I understand these days tools are made in certain ways so they will break and you would go and buy another one. I remember trusting on certain types of brands just because quality was the best. I like your point Vince about the tool being easy to knock over same with drills if your working in a house lay your tools flat! Also with the m18 I like that the battery is at an angle or it would interfere with your wrist I feel.

Thanks for the video and much respect to you and the gang. Understand your point here but for me, I opted for the M18 version. I have no M12 tools therefore no batteries. By the time I purchased the M12 tool and 2 batteries I would be over the cost of the M18 tool. Thanks for the comparison, gave me a good reason to think.

good review, I purchased the M12 Fuel bare tool with sanding disc and blade, I already had a M12 Fuel impack with both batteries and charger, I really like the M12 Oscillating tool, wished I'd got one sooner, it's so handy.

I think I’ll go the M18 route, mainly because 18volt batteries are all I have on my job site. The M12 looks like a fine tool, and is a screaming good sale now. But it would drive me crazy to have 12’s and 18’s on my job until I croak. My sanity is most important to me at this point.

Fair enough, I will say I've had the m12 fuel impact for a few years now & depending what type you work you do it excels on all marks. Very light, fits in all types of spaces & plenty of power for the size it can drive 3 inch screws & 2 inches lags no problem. To each their own tho!

The M18 battery and usage time is the advantage along with the auto feature. The higher capacity M18 batteries will allow more usage. They are the same size so M18 is the best option overall. Plus most people have more M18 batteries.

Weeks ago I went M12. Smaller lighter Both oscillating at same speed. You should give blades time to clear material not push down and overheat it - saves blades/money. Yes I have both m12 & m 18 batteries already

Exactly what I was looking for, I was thinking that the M12 is a great tool at a decent price. M18 looks like a fantastic tool but pretty pricey. Curious of the performance difference between the two, this clinches it. Buying the M12. Thanks for the great videos.
