You could save on an older m12 3/8" drive ratchet and splurge on the m12 fuel extended reach 1/4" drive ratchet. Also, I'm seriously in love with the m12 system.-I think my wife is jealous.

One possible improvement: move the forward and reverse control onto the handle so that we switch without taking the ratchet off the bolt. A lot of time, it is in wrong position to begin with.

@@wayned3137 I don't get it on wrong position often but sometime when u get into tight space, a turn too much will back it against something that u then can't get the ratchet out without reversing it but then u can't even reach the control knob because it is against that something. I work on BMWs, unlike Japanese cars, they don't have serviceability. If it is a button on handle, u can easily reverse it.

@@derekkchung I agree. A push button switch close to the paddle like on an impact wrench would be my preferred choice for working on European cars (I own an Audi and a VW)

when I use my very Long 3/8 MAC TOOL air ratchet I'm always grabbing the air fitting and air line to give me that extra 4 or more inches on Breaker Bar power... ie Truck Bumpers etc in the Auto Body Shop

The boot can stop the grease come out but it can't stop the sand get into the vent holes of the motor.

I feel like depending on price, if you are going to buy 1 or even a set, you should just go ahead and buy the extended reach set or 1. Might as well get the extra reach.

I bought the 3/8 short. Now I need the extended. Thank you, you are killing my wallet 😂

I think the fuel one have two vent for the motor that you can't drop any sand into it,so becareful when you loosen bolts like engine bottom plastic cover.

I have the snap on extended neck and I love it. Snap on neck is little longer and slimmer, i tried the Milwaukee and i wouldnt trade my snap on for one of this, the price point is not far from the snap on so spend the extra bucks and get something youll be 100% happy with.

In the UK there is quite a difference in price. I paid 175 for my extended reach. I inquired about the snap on which came with two batteries and it was over 500!

Snap on is an absolute rip off across the board in the uk.

Milwaukee needs to change the position of the forward and reverse switch on these. That’s my only compliant! To many times I have gotten the tool wedged between a hard surface without being able to access the switch to change the direction so i can thread in the bolt enough to remove the tool! Again other than that its a great tool in either the FUEL or NON-FUEL i have both and they still have plenty of life left.

I agree with you. I too have had the ratchet pinched in an area and unable to switch directions. Would be nice to have a reversing lever. I actually wish the FUEL ratchets had the head size of the non-FUEL. But they are great tools that get used all the time.

Shop Tool Reviews I also agree about the head size difference. That is what set Milwaukee apart in the beginning from snap on in my opinion other than the price. The snap on head was and still is larger than the non-fuel 1/4 ratchet. My boss actually had a snap on 1/4 ratchet and he traded it in to the snap on dealer once he used my non-fuel ratchet and went out and bought me and him both new fuel 1/4 ratchets. Ill be purchasing the 1/4 extended reach next. My plan is to use the 1/4 ratchet like a 3/8 ratchet by simply adding an adapter. That way while I’m doing a project i can use one strictly for 3/8 sockets and the other for 1/4 sockets however i see fit. Thanks for the great review!

Flat Bastard Engineering Channel the switch should work the same way as an impact drills forward and reverse switch. But on the ratcheting head when you pushed the rod either way it would reverse the paw.

I initially bought the standard length 3/8” Milwaukee ratchet but I returned it and got both 3/8” and 1/4” long reach ratchets.

I finally purchased the shorter version after debating for a very long time and 3 months later they came out with the extended reach version, unbelievable. The only thing that needs to be done with all these ratchets is place the tighten and loosen switch down on the tool like a drill. Using that switch on the head is a real pain.

That's a bummer. I will have to say that I love the extended, but at the same time, I don't think I could do without our standard (shorter) version. Your complaint is not alone, but something that's probably tough to "fix" without major engineering.

Flat Bastard Engineering Channel it would have to be made as an electronic switch just like every other tool, but the ratcheting action might be the issue why it’s not possible to do. If people can do this kzread.info/dash/bejne/gIZnlLeFqMXQicY.html then Milwaukee engineers should be able to move the switch lol.

so, I've been researching a few different brands and types and I've kinda narrowed it down to a couple different options. the 3/8 version of this, ingersoll rand r3130 20v, kobalt 24v max, and snap on 14.4 v. I prefer how thin both the snap on and the Milwaukee are, but I've only seen a manual torque spec for the kobalt and snap on, which are both around 150ft/lbs (not the electric torque which is 55ish). is there a similar manual torque spec (as far as manual breaking force) with the milwaukee? I'd rather not have to switch tools just to break a bolt.

We've had this exact discussion with Milwaukee engineers, and they have yet to release an exact manual torque number. They did clarify that it can be used with manual force, because there were rumors out there that said they couldn't. I wish that I had a better answer for you.

How much torque can the extended ratchets take? I know you said 40 and 55. But then you said you’d crank it a bit more if it needed by hand. So I’m curious how much they can take

I would say they should be able to take 80 ft-lbs of force. I've applied this much many times.

The 3/8 is just to bulky. Wish it had the footprint of the 1/4. That's the only reason I didn't upgrade from my non fuel

Could someone get the 3/8 and use a 1/4 reducer. More power, cheaper and flexibility. Or is it a bad idea with a ratchet such as this? Awesome review, thanks!

The step down could increase length of the ratchet far enough it wont fit in the spot, off the top of my head old VW 2.0 8v spark plugs the 3/8 -> 1/4 step down would be too long to fit under the intake manifold

Hi can the extended ratchet 1/4 take manual ratcheting on 15-19mm bolt just like the 3/8? I already have the standard 1/4 ratchet. Im asking because the 1/4 head is more smaller than the 3/8 head. Thanks

That 1/4 has a $$$$ issues! lol I want it real bad but the price of the non FUEL ( yes it is a weaker tool and no extension) but with money saved you can buy another tool or battery or gas for car food for man. Maybe start with the old cheap one and see how much you need it.

I bought the impact, its a shame that it doesnt lock like these weak things do…but i agree the wider base batteries are unsuitable, they should just make the battery longer

Personally, I want the tool with highest output, 1/2 in. drive. The second one will be a 3/8".

I have a wore out both SNAP ON and MAC TOOLS air ratchets 1/4 and 3/8 ... because I do AUTO BODY I need my tools oil and grease FREE and I like my Tools CLEAN so I wipe down my tools with Lacquer Thinner (Gun Wash) with a damp thinner rag.... The Thinner takes of the Milwaukee white letters and paint off and not sure how the Plastic will fair over time... would like to see a Smooth All metal Body for easy cleanup or a Clean Smooth chemical resistant plastic body on the tools (and NO you can't use fish eye city WD40 in a Auto Body shop)

I have used the Snap-on ratchets, but not the MAC. I understand what you mean with keeping oil out of the shop, we do some restorations. Another one that works well for cleaning tools is baby wipes or hand wipes. Easy to make your own with a roll of paper towels and Dawn and lemon juice. No oils to pollute.

I use SuperClean diluted with distilled water to clean all my tools! It takes off the grease, bondo dust and dirt extremely well and won’t hurt the plastic or the paint on the tool.

I know a lot of people like the older non-FUEL versions because they were faster and they have a smaller head. Not a bad idea. You will Love that Stubby. That's a really handy tool to have around the shop.

@@Shoptoolreviews not even that. I sometimes have to go on road calls for flat tires and I have a 8 yr old dewalt. It's very large as well as the battery. Too heavy to lug around over time. Milwaukee is really changing the game. These fuel stubby impact guns take off lugnuts no problem 💪

Having a longer one has help me to do more jobs too just ask my wife 😝

Wtf? I hate review video where they never use the tool. Torque a bolt down and show the tool in use. Get a car and take some nuts and bolts of that been exposed to heat and the elements.

@@michaelarnold1590 Later in the video, I show them even with the tape measure. The way the camera lens works, you can't get the picture to make the even at both ends. The lens makes them look more uneven than they actually are.
