Funfact: they were not intentionally looking for a deaf girl. When Millicent Simmonds gotbthe part, writers got notes from her parents on raising a deaf child. So you could say her parents helped with the script.

She knows alphabets in ASL from the book she bought but can't make a full sentences using ASL. But thankfully our family and even our neighborhood can read her lips well so we can still communicate. She can speak, not clearly but somehow understandable. There are a lot of deaf people in Indonesia that can't use or never heard about asl especially those who's live in the rural area. I hope Indonesian's government have more education program on ASL for those who need it. I want to be an ASL interpreter too actually

It has evolved over time, just like spoken language has! Flip the question and ask, “Who chose the words for us to speak in English, ‘I’m good. How are you?’” Same question can be asked for Spanish, French, German, etc. All these languages evolved naturally! As for the origins of American Sign Language in particular a lot of it if from LSF (French Sign Language), and Martha’s Vineyard (an island where an overwhelming amount of the population was deaf, and everybody communicated in sign). The two sort of merged together, and over time Americans have modified signs to make them their own!

Millie has the cutest side profile, also i had no clue she was actually deaf
She was amazing in this movie and this interview...I can’t imagine the movie without her...great casting choice.
She did an amazing job, such a great actor. I love these movies ,she made them great looking forward to a part 3
She is talking through sign language but talking nonetheless, the crew should have had a camera in front of her just like we usually have in any speaker interviews

Lucas Vieira Plus cutting away to the movie clip while she’s explaining something makes it difficult for deaf people to follow. Whenever she’s using sign the camera should be on her, not cutting away so only hearing people get her message.

There can't be a camera in front of her since her interpreter is in front of her (which is necessary for good Sign language communication)
@SolarisMusic

@@paulinezugzwang1773 The camera aimed at the speaker would usually positioned (at least in a setup like this) in front of the desk, on our left. Under no circumstances would the camera be literally in front of her face.

Millicient is so gorgeous and elegant, and the translator is very talented and expressive.
she’s so pretty and talented and graceful i can’t deal
She definitely deserves to win an academy award 🥇
She’s so cute. I just wanna be her friend so bad
Seeing her and that an actual deaf person played this role makes me sooo happy. Deaf culture is so wonderful and representation is so important. My son in deaf and it had made me a better mother and enriched our lives. I can’t wait to see what a bright future she will have.
Ok she's crazy pretty and around my age wow

This is actually really cool. I hope she keeps playing roles in movies.
Without sounding stupid or ignorant, I’d be really intrigued on seeing how they came up for all the signs for words, like the first people that were like (moves hands in air) that means “Im good! How are you?”

Yeah I wonder how different than speaking language because they have something to go off of. But I don't know much about the origins of either
@awesomelyathena7147

Different countries have different signs American Sign Language, British Sign Language, Spoken Sign Language, French Sign, Spanish Sign, Military Sign and etc. Jessica Kelgren-Fozard has a video on the differences between American and British SL. You could always Google the origins of sign language.

What a lot of people don't know is that sign language (at least ASL) is not a literal translation of English. It's a separate language with its own grammar, which is part of what makes it so interesting and beautiful.
