I believe that some of our grandads that HAD to work on farms on the docks and in the mines instead of going to school during The Depression as teens and in many cases as preteens are the tough guys. What about all the kids who took up arms, some without any training or rifles, to fight for their respective countries against the Axis?

there's people who are extremely fortunate to grow up watching JOE LOUIS, ROCKY MARCIANO, & MUHAMAD ALI whole careers . As for me, i was fortunate to grow up watching IRON MIKE TYSON's whole career., from the GOOD, THE GREAT, THE BAD & THE UGLY. I was 14 years old in 1985 when i first discovered TYSON, and i became an official FAN and watched his whole pro career from 1985, all the way to his last fight in 2005 . And it was an extremely EXCITING 20 year EXPERIENCE indeed

On this day, 36 years ago, Mike Tyson became the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, the youngest to ever do so at his best. He was one of the most physically, talented, heavy weights to ever exist. It is a shame that, in a lot of ways, he beat himself by not remaining fully dedicated to the sport of boxing.

5 years would've been enough. The trouble really started to escalate around 1988 between the Robin Givens relationship and firing Kevin Rooney because Don King talked him into it, combined with Jimmy Jacobs dying. Jimmy Jacobs dying is an underrated event in Mike's downfall because his death left a vacuum, giving Don King the opportunity to swoop in.

@@lucashenderson2775 That reptillian snake King saw Tyson as his next cash-cow with this title win. Managers Jacobs and Cayton were in the way. Later with Jacobs out of the picture (conveniently) he teamed up with Givens to push Cayton out and gained full control in '88. Starting here he was corrupting Mike with riches, booze and women, willingly indulged in. Mike got soft and Rooney became exasperated and left. In his memoir he said he actually wanted him to stay but I think Rooney was tired of King's machinations and the swarming of idiots and corrupting influences. Like it's been said, if Cus lived for 5 more years, he would have kept the vultures away without a doubt, he was incredibly wise battling the mob in the '50s. Mike could have gone down as the Greatest.

one more thing - Berbick only started to box at age 23. I think he was 32 in this fight. Tyson started to box around 12, and was 19 when he won. Starting at such a young age, and having full, daily access to the gym w/famous trainers and managers must have been an enormous advantage. Berbick was an old man when he fought Tyson. Berbick fought toe to toe against Tyson in his "prime" - and anyone can see how strong and powerful Berbick looks. Tyson commented after the fight about how surprised he was about Berbick's strength - something like, "he was as strong as me!" so, given that Berbick went toe to toe against prime Tyson, you've gotta give him credit. he fought against his game plan, trying to prove his manhood. No one without moving around that ring (and basically running, for some of them) could survive. I don't think of anyone going toe to toe and surviving to go to a decision before this fight occurred. Ribalta fought awesome but had to move constantly.

Berbick was terrified like every other person who got knocked out by tyson, and couldn't even preform right. He had given up in his head before the fight even started and his face said it all. It's so sad because all the bad hands he was dealt as a child to finally find solice in his adopted father Cus D'Amato. Then after Cus's death he had Andy Rooney to propell him to the finish line. Had he never got with Robin Givens, had he continued to train and fight more often as champion, and had he stayed clean off the drugs and partying he could have dominated the early 90s like he did in the late 80's. I think Holyfeild and Lewis would have still beaten him but it would have been a more competitive match up. I am very curious how he would fair against Bowe or the Klitchco Brothers too. As for the modern Era 2000s heavyweights he would have demolished them.

At 48:32 Berbeck: "was it the second round?" That shows you how vicious the punches were by "Iron" Mike. Classy interview overall by Berbick. He seemed like an honest guy who just happened to be champion at the wrooong time.

I've read both of Mike's books - Undisputed Truth, his memoir, and Iron Ambition - My Life with Cus D'Amato, which is also a full biography of Cus. I have to say, if Cus stayed alive for 5 more years I firmly believe Mike would have reigned for ten years. He would have kept him sheltered, on the straight and narrow and completely brainwashed (in a good way). Those snakes absolutely ruined Mike's prime. Surrounded by idiots, he got soft with riches, booze and women.

So many what ifs in his career But let's be thankful for what he did provide, 3 years of first class entertainment as maybe the most exciting boxer ever We can second guess him all night for the poor decisions he made but I prefer to remember his prime, which burned out much too soon And to be frank if he avoided the poor decisions he probably would have retired at 25 before having to fight Lewis, Bowe, or Holyfield and gone full time into promotions After Spinks he probably only world have fought 3-5 times, his last fights are probably against some combination of Bruno, Williams, Stewart, Douglas, Mercer, Morrison, and McCall before calling it quits

November is Native American Heritage Month: We’re celebrating by honoring a number of figures who have blazed a trail for the Native American community. Wes Studi of the Cherokee Nation has won acclaim for his authentic, empathetic, & moving performances in classic films like ‘Dances With Wolves’ & ‘The Last of the Mohicans.’ In 2019, he received an honorary lifetime Academy Award, making him the second Indigenous actor to receive an Oscar. As a young man, Studi served in Vietnam and became involved in Native American activism prior to his foray into acting. Studi entered the movies later in life - after the age of 40 - and credited his late start with helping to inform his performances. ‘Life has served me well,’ Studi said in his Academy acceptance speech. ‘I can connect with characters I play simply by referencing real life.’

We all agree had Cus D'Amato not died in November 1985 and had lived a little bit longer, Tyson's life would not have unraveled the way it did including the firing of Kevin Rooney. Everything would've been different. What is underestimated and not talked about alot is Jimmy Jacobs death. Tyson and Jacobs were very close. Jimmy was like a big brother to Mike. Had Jacobs lived a little bit longer as well the same applies to him on his influence in Tyson's life. But as sad as it is it wasn't meant to be. Such is life.🥊🙏🏻

True and also bull about Mike not facing any top heavyweights yet,he fought capable experienced heavyweights like James Quick Tillis and Jose Ribalta, knocked out Marvis Frazier in about 20 seconds, and Frazier had been the distance with top heavyweights like bone crusher Smith. Also Mike fought Mitch Green, considered a top heavyweight at the time. You can umm and AHH at the fighters I've named but they were credible debatable fighters and you can't deny Tillis wasn't a top heavyweight at the time and at his very best against Tyson who gave him a very close fight that could have gone either way,so,Tyson was more experienced than Merchant claims, with the smile and fake boxing knowledge,I find him irritating at times, when has he been inside a boxing ring to fight or even gym to spar.smh.

@@paulanthony5274 Agreed, Tyson had plenty of credible opponents. He was a victim of his own dominance. Biggs was an Olympic Gold Medalist that beat Lennox in the amateurs, Pinklon Thomas was a very technical boxer with a brilliant jab, Razor Ruddock, Tony Tucker, Alex Stewart (who gave Holyfield a hell of a fight). These are all good fighters that could have become world champions if they weren't already. A bad KO loss is devastating for a fighter's career because it not only damages their self belief but also any aura of intimidation that they may have carried prior to being demolished. Tyson made good fighters like Biggs, Pinklan, and Stewart look terrible. That was a big part of why so many call him overrated.
