I always believe Tyson was at his physical peak here, even his original technique has started to faded. In two fights against Ruddock he was getting nailed by big hooks and uppercuts and he just stood there like nothing happen and continuous to trade. I think in second fight there's a punch which threw his mouthpiece away , yet Tyson just didnt care.

@Brian Charles sustained beating my friend. It was never one shot. He got outboxed for numerous rounds. You're missing the point. Holyfield never took a sustained beating. It was always back and forth. Tyson had a great chin but not a great heart. He never fought back under pressure but took his beating. Holyfield, Douglas and Lewis had to literally batter him for 11, 10 and 8 rounds to win. Just to make it clear, I'm talking about chin not career record.

Such an awesome fight. The last of the vintage Tyson fights, including the rematch of course. This era is my personal favorite for him. He had already been through turmoil, lost his titles, and now his longevity was being questioned at 24 years old. He may not have been the technician he was in the 80's anymore but he was still ruthless. It's really hard to say who would have won had he faced Holyfield in 1991. You can tell he was on a mission to regain his titles and was serious about it. What a different time the early 90s would have been had he been free.

Steve Lott personally messaged me on one of my questions and he told me he stopped watching tyson after tyson fired him and rooney. Steve said tyson was never the same after spinks. The training regiman and mental approach and skills all deteriorated. The brute skills he developed and peaked with in early 88, turned into a ragefull approach to fighting and this exploited his decline in abandoning the defensive first posture damato created so brilliantly in him and atlas and rooney maintained iin him so skillfully, all went out the window after 1988.This was one of the reasons for tysons loss to douglas, according to Steve Lott. He no longer moved his upper body and head with that sharp twitch and throw combinations in an instant as soon as he saw an opening. I watched the douglas win and thruout the mid rounds, douglas was so open for combinations. the younger tyson would have been pummelling douglas in those middle rounds. This tyson had some type of hesitation in retaliating swiftly after 1988 and especially vs douglas in those middle rounds watch the fight carefully again in rounds 3-6 and you see a totally different tyson, even when he was in close and douglas leaned on him and grabbed him.It was nothing the younger tyson would have had problems with retaliating with 4 punches in a second. That's the attack that hurts the oppoennts, THE PUNCHES THEY DONT SEE!!! He lost that.It went with his motivation and focus to win and not lose, the determination. Once douglas got the jab in consisitantly ,tysons declined discipline told himself that we'll go for the rematch, give him this fight and I'll take care of the rematch. It was 100% mental decline. Also notice he wasnt sweating with beads of sweat before the fight started. TYson always had beads of sweat on him before the bell rang. No good, A dry tyson was no good.

This Tyson, just headhunting with big shots was still probably the best heavyweight around in 91, he showed an iron chin in this and the rematch with questionable training camps. I think he would have beaten Holyfield at this point. He left prison with none of his former skills, just looked scary and still hit hard if he landed. Ferdie Pacheco is wrong, and nobody caught it. He asked Richard Steele why he didn't talk to Ruddock, to ask him if he was ok etc., like he did when he asked Bernard Taylor in the fight with Chavez. There's a very good reason, taylor was knocked down and had a count; in this case, there was no knockdown nor count. The referee can't stop the fight to ask a fighter if he's okay; that can only happen when the action is broken by a knockdown or standing 8 count, which wasn't applicable here. That's your answer Dr Pacheco, and all these experts ranting and raving, turning this into a big fiasco, simply because none of them realize you can't stop a fight to ask a guy if he's ok, or to look at his eyes to see if he's coherent. R. Steele only had 2 choices; stop the fight or let it continue. He may have stopped it to soon just the same, but the criticism that he didn't ask Ruddock if he was okay isn't legitimate. The referee sees the fighters much closer up than anyone else, so I think it's a bunch of crap to question him every time. In the Chavez/Taylor fight, Steele took a lot of criticism that was totally unwarranted. He stopped that fight based on what he saw in Taylors' eyes, and because Taylor didn't answer when Steele asked him a question. Every decision isn't going to please everyone, And indeed a decision may be wrong occasionally. However, the best outcome is to err on the side of safety.

The younger Ruddick threw combinations and was developing into a more complete fighter. However, he got addicted to that hybrid upper cut/hook punch he threw. It was powerful, but it seemed he slowed down and was looking to just land that one big punch. He should have continued to develop into a more complete fighter. It would have set up his bigger powershots. I think he beats Tyson if he had continued to develop, throwing those combinations and probably goes and wins a belt. Ruddick had great power and Tyson's ability to absorb his punches is more impressive as the years go by.

That's true Torii. It left him wide open for people like Lennox Lewis and Morrison to exploit. Razor should have developed a more diverse attack to go with his 'smash' shot. It could have set it up better and also gave him better defense. He would have lasted longer as a fighter. I do believe he wasn't the same fighter after his two fights with Tyson. Razor admits he wasn't the same after those two fights. Lewis and Morrison where part of the 'clean up crew' after the Tyson fights.

You can see in this fight how mike had regressed from his early championship days. His head doesn't move as much,he's far more flat footed and open and his workrate isn't as impressive.saying that he still had far too much for ruddock, dishing out a beating on the Canadian who at the time was the division's dangerman.

Ruddock was entertaining, but i think he was quite overrated after the two encounters with Tyson. I mean the guy had a pretty weak chin, and his legs were made out of rubber, and he only had that great left hook. He was easy to read, and was wide open. He could have been so much better with a snapping jab, he never used it ffs.. Lewis took him apart, and even Morrison trapped him and blew him out. I am sure everyone else of the greats of that era would have beaten him aswell.

Although a good performance from Tyson here, you can already see the diminishing talent, and cracks showing, standing more square on less head movement a bit flat footed and sloppy. Headhunting but still packed a punch

with a full 35 seconds left and ruddocks arm tied behind the ropes, tyson would have finished ruddock off in the next 15 seconds with a barrage as he did to bruno in 89 or steele would have stepped in the right time to stop it. It wouldnt have mattered, the tyson comeback here was destined with giachetti for the next 2 years, to ko douglas in a rematch and holy would have been ko'd in 92 in 8 rounds, had they fought. Tyson without jail would have gone on to fight foreman after the holy fight and fat old george would have been pummeled as well. This rape of desarie washington and jail put the screws on the lid of tysons failed comeback. After jail, he was again ready to lose as in tokyo in 1990. He came out of jail too confident and didnt train anymore with the same tenacity as before 1989 with rooney. He believed holyfield was ready to die and the others were tomato cans. No more discipline in tyson anymore after jail.IN fact, after 1988 ,the game was over for mike, according to Steve Lott. He told me he didn't even watch tyson anymore after spinks. He knew mike was never the same after 1988.

fadethetrade I think Tyson's downfall was firing Kevin Rooney as his trainer after Jim and Cus passed. Once he was in bed with King, it was inevitable. Rooney was the only one who would stand up to Tyson and tell him what he needed to hear, instead of what he wanted to hear, like the 'yes' men King surrounded him with.

I think either way, Tyson wins the first fight and KO's Ruddock. He easily won the 2nd fight. As for Chavez Taylor, I think Taylor deserved the win, there would've been a rematch and Chavez would've KO'd him.
