Mike Tyson vs Mike Jameson 24.1.1986

Спорт

Mike Tyson gets pushed into the middle rounds for the first time in his career against journeyman Mike Jameson. More info below...
Mike Jameson was a tough boxer, and although he had lost 9 fights by this point in time of his career he had only been stopped twice, once by Tony Fulilangi in 1982 and the other against Frank Bruno in 1983. Jameson had lost but gone the distance with other notable boxers of the time such as undefeated Scott Frank, Yaqui Lopez, Randall Cobb and Michael Dokes. Although Jameson had 14 wins, he hadn't beaten anybody of note.
Tyson started off the year well with a 1st round TKO against David Jaco racking up his 16th win in total. To this point in time however nobody had taken Tyson past the 4th round. Tyson was suffering from bronchitis heading into the fight...
Jameson entered the match with Tyson holding a significant height, weight and reach advantages. Standing 6'4" tall, weighing 236lbs and having a 79" reach, Jameson was a giant compared to the 5'10", 215lb Mike Tyson. Jameson spent most of the fight clinching and retreating from Tyson throwing only the occasional punch. Tyson did well to stalk his opponent around the ring forcing the pace however he had no answer to the repeated clinching of Jameson. In round 2 Tyson opened a cut above Jameson's left eye which caused Jameson to retreat even more than he had been, focusing on surviving more than winning. Round 3 was interesting in the fact it was only 2 minutes long and Tyson was warned for a low blow. In round 4 Jameson was warned for clinching and a possible intentional headbutt, immediately following the warning Tyson pounced on Jameson putting him down with a flurry of punches. Somehow Jameson survived the round and took Tyson into the 5th round for the first time ever. Following a flurry of hooks early in round 5, Jameson went down for a 2nd time and although he got back to his feet, referee Joe Cortez surprisingly stopped the fight.
Mike Jameson remained active until 1992, losing all but 1 of his next 8 fights. He came very close to causing a couple upsets in 1987 when he knocked down Tony Tubbs during the final round of their fight, lost by split decision to Phillip Brown and then had a no contest declared in his bout with former World Heavyweight title challenger Jimmy Young. Jameson's last fight was a majority decision win over 6 rounds against the practically unknown Berry Basler, in 1992.
Tyson was lined up to face veteran heavyweight James "Quick" Tillis in May, widely considered to be Tyson's first REAL challenge, however he still had a couple more victims to plow through before then...

Fun Fact: Jameson used to spar/train with Mike. He was of the few guys that would actually spar with him because Mike would hit so hard, and he would come back the next day and do it all again. Man is tough, and knew Mike's style.

Mike Jameson was our pest control guy who serviced a building I used to work at in San Jose, CA. Dude was super cool and humble. I knew him for about 2 years before he casually told me he used to box during a conversation. When I asked if he had ever fought anyone that I’d likely heard of, to my surprise I learned he went 5 rounds with Tyson in 1986, the longest anyone had ever lasted with Tyson up to that point. Just goes to show, you never know what people’s past experiences are. Either what they’ve accomplished, or what they’ve been through and survived.

7:02 - That uppercut could decapitate a tank. Jameson has a helluva chin. Mike worked the heavy bag for 5 rounds, body and head. Merciful stoppage to an accumulated beating. And I just love Mike's post-fight interviews when he was on his way up. So humble and knowledgeable. It was when he still loved to fight. Hungry to win the title for the deceased Cus. '85-'86 Tyson is my favourite.

Tysons hand speed was absolutely ridiculous for a heavyweight. This fast, quick twitch tyson imo was the best HW specimen there ever was in the history of boxing. And what the world didn't know at this time.of his career, was that his stamina was superb, and his chin was made of iron. In these early fights, approx his 1st 20 to 25 fights, he seemed to be just faster paced and on a fuckin war path.

And had he not married Robin, or went with Don King, he probably would have never wound up in prison (thus depriving us of what should have been his prime years from 24-28), and continued to take the sport seriously. He would have been unquestionably capable of beating Holyfield, Bowe, and Lewis.

@brucescott4261 Tyson has no one to blame but himself, he allowed those snakes in the grass to infiltrate his circle. Tyson had little self discipline and mental toughness imo, he needed guidance. That's what his original Cus/Rooney/Jacobs/Cayton team gave him. All he had to do was soak up knowledge and skills being taught to him. Team Tyson was made up unqualified men who did whatever Tyson wanted to do. If Tyson didn't want to train hard certain days, rather go out and about, chase p#ssy, etc, we're they gonna tell no, absolutely not. Tysons conditionin and elusiveness were immediately affected by making up his own team and cutting ties with the original team. He was not the same, if people cant see that they are blind. But I agree, Tyson has no one to blame but himself. No excuses.

He said got a call from his manager if he wanted to take a short notice fight in the UK against Frank. Now mind you this was before social media. Jameson was able to absorb some serious punishment. Also, this earlier version of Tyson was such a well-conditioned student of the sport. Physical stamina much better than he is credited for, an iron chin, and he was patient here. Used mostly body punches until about round 4 when the head started opening up, and Mike himself showed no signs of being tired. I still contest that we never got to see Mike in his "prime." Had he kept his corner instead of going with Don King, he would have remained a hungry student of the sport and would have hit his true prime about the time he (instead) showed up hungover against Douglas and subsequently went to prison. He may still have lost some fights in his career eventually, but he definitely would have been capable of beating Holyfield, Bowe, Lewis, Morrison, and Foreman.

These guys were picked. Cus and Rooney picked these guys, but that is what you do to teach a very talented fighter and help them become a champion. It was good for Mike to beat these guys. Against journeymen opponents Tyson could make mistakes with little consequences while gaining confidence and improving with every fight. These were the right fights for Tyson. He was able to stay busy, get plenty of ring experience and stay out of trouble. He stayed in the ring and off streets. But that was gone, without Cus and Rooney in his corner, Mike was subject to his own distractions and it started taking a toll.

I swear it pisses me off something fierce when refs do this shit. There was no reason to stop that fight if the fighter wanted to continue. Yes, Jameson was losing. But he wasn't getting obliterated. (mostly because he would continue to tie up.) Yes, the odds are Jameson was going to lose. But everyone knew that going in. But as long as Jameson is coherent of his surroundings, and he wants to fight, and he continues to throw punches.... YOU CAN'T STOP THE MATCH! That is such bullshit.

@@Tonymontanayayo I'm sorry, but are you mentally challenged? If you are, I apologize. I'm not making fun of you. But you seemed to have totally missed the point of my comment. Because my point was that he wasn't currently in danger. He was still in the fight. He was losing. No doubt about that. He was getting soundly beat. But I can show you example after example of fights where it was one sided, yet thanks to a lucky punch or the other guy simply punching himself out, and tiring, the fighter who had been losing, ended up winning. There's always that possibility. And as long as there is still fight in the boxer, as long as he is still capable of putting his hands up to defend himself, he deserves that chance.
