    I think Tyson was intimidated by Holyfield, and is why he kept staring at him. He seems to be become more aggressive in these press conferences when he’s facing a more difficult opponent (eg the Lennox Lewis brawl).

    You can tell Tyson thought he walked this fight. To say, “you got nothing coming, man, nothing, Nothing coming”, shows that he expected Holyfield to be an easy night for him. I’m not sure about deep down, but it clear Don King & those around Tyson thought Holyfield was shot as a fighter & well on the descent. The hangers on probably drummed that into Tyson & he ended up believing them. These people were so amateurish. I remember Tyson once talking about how even when in training for Larry Holmes, Kevin Rooney told him over & over, “don’t think you don’t have to train properly just coz this guy has been inactive or that he’s 38”. And that was the type of difference between a corner man who really cared & cornermen who were only interested in money & robbing from Tyson. Rooney would have had Tyson fight 6 times before facing a fighter of the calibre of Holyfield. Rooney would have had him sparring 10 hard rounds in the gym 3 times per week against guys who would not just fall over or fold.

    Same with Teddy Atlas. A lot of guys say Mike's biggest mistake was firing Kevin Rooney and the team, but equally as big was messing things up with Teddy Atlas. Teddy Atlas, Cus D'Amato and Kevin Rooney together would've made Mike into an indestructible machine. But Don King the parasite came in and screwed everything up and Mike was too young and stupid to know any better.

    Say what you want about don king but he made the big fights happen we don't have promoters like that in boxing anymore they allow the fighters to duck eachother and fight less competition and give big money out to fight nobodys

  • @ProfRogers

    @ProfRogers

    2 жыл бұрын

    That is actually not completely true. Top fighters that were NOT with Don King were frozen out and denied opportunities. King's best fighters would duck threats. Lennox Lewis being a great example. Yes Boxing today does have lots of problems with top fighters ducking each other, but don't make out that King was some messiah who ensured the best fought the best. The only reason Tyson vs Holyfield 1 happened is because they were both King fighters and Evander was considered 'over the hill' and no threat to King's money fighter Tyson.

    You can tell by this press conference that Tyson came into this fight to emotional, angry towards Holyfield. And it worked against him. Along with him not training properly and underestimating Holyfield. Look at Holyfield...calm cool collected composed. If only Tyson had not underestimated Holyfield, gotten into great shape...trained properly like when he had Kevin Rooney, he would have won. No doubt.

    Look at their recent opponents at this time - Holyfield had three fights with Bowe, one with Moorer and another with Mercer. All very competitive (he also had that joke bout with Czyz as well as a stay busy fight with Alex Stewart). Tyson on the other hand faced McNeely, Seldon, Bruno and Mathis. All were scared and offered very little resistance. I was rooting hard for Tyson that night but going in I knew he had his hands full. After four years out he came back to face guys who didn’t prepare him for a tough fight so when he met Holyfield he wasn’t ready at all.
