Mike Struggles to Breathe - Diaphragm Paralysis Treated by Dr. Kaufman

Ғылым және технология

Out of nowhere, Mike began to struggle with shortness of breath. From mowing the lawn to walking upstairs, he couldn’t fill his lungs with enough air. During a swim in a lake, his mysterious condition took a turn for the worse and Mike feared he would drown. It was then that Mike started a journey… a journey that brought him to Dr. Matthew Kaufman-a reconstructive plastic surgeon, specializing in diaphragm paralysis. This is Mike's recovery story.

Mike, that is a great story. I am also one of Dr. Kaufmans patients in California. I had the same surgery back in February 2017 at UCLA. Its been 5 months since the surgery and I do notice a big differrence. My Physical Therapist are very happy with my progress. I am in Law Enforcement and injured my nerve while being attacked by a suspect. I hope to go back, but time will tell. I highly recommed Dr. Kaufman for Phrenic Nerve surgery. He is truly the best Doctor I have ever met and will be forever be grateful to him for making my quality of life better. Mike, take care and I wish you a great recovery. Frank A.

@Mihajlo Dejanovic I never got a reply, I’ve just been trying to figure it out myself. I thing I found is that I have what’s called upper and lower cross syndrome. You can look it up to see if it matches your posture. Basically if you have a forward head posture, all your neck, shoulders and chest muscles are frozen from trying to hold your head up, and if your low back is super tight and has too much curve it stretches out your abs and jams up your hips and pelvic floor.

  • @Juggernaut365

@Mihajlo Dejanovic look on you tube for lower cross syndrome and start there. If you can fix the muscle imbalance your diaphragm should start working. I don’t know anything about the nerve pinch stuff though. I’m just trying to fix the lower cross syndrome…. It’s taking FOREVER

Amazing how I came across Dr. Kaufman after my husband was diagnosed with bilateral phrenic nerve paralysis. It was a very unsettling experience to see my husband suffer with difficulty breathing or not breathing as a normal person would . Amazing how we take our breathing for granted. A supposedly normal process but one day we became so distraught to be sent home after spending almost a month in the hospital to be told there was no plan or any treatment options. It was then I was determined to find help for my husband, the love of my life and yes I found hope in Dr. Kaufman after I researched and got in touch to consult and to find out there were options and if was then the journey of hope began for us. Surgery was 08/03/2018 and from there my husband began to improve one step at a time until finally, no more by pap or oxygen and another surgery on 11/15/3019 y to complete the other side of his diaphragm and here we are now, thankful to Dr. Kaufman for all he has done to help give my husband a chance to be normal. We love you Dr. Kaufman. The professional manner and courtesy you gave to us while in New Jersey showed us you love and care about your patient’s. We are forever grateful to you and your professionalism in healthcare and giving of your heart and time you took to ensure we got through this journey by your encouraging words of wisdom. You did it and we are very grateful to you and your staff. Carter and Debra Cartrette

@Dr. Kaufman, On CT it says that I have mild right elevated hemidiaphragm. Can this indicate nerve damage or is it only severe elevation that would indicate that? It also found 2 nodules and a cyst in my middle and lower lungs, and mild degeneration of the vertebral column. Also, do pulmonologists do that sniff test or is it another specialty? I have an appointment later this month for follow-up with the Pulmonologist, but the CT makes it sound like nothing needs to be done since I'm not a smoker. I have had chest congestion on and off and coughing up congealed phlegm globs at random various times, and shortness of breath upon mild exertion.

I am having diaphragm issues. They call it diaphragm dysfunction its moving less than 2 cms makes me feel horrible my 02 levels are fine feel bad when humidity is up and in the morning. Its both sides of the diaphragm. Had an emg on the limbs and was clean but didn't test the phrenics maybe cause I had the sniff test to show minimal excursion. Having a SFemg done at Cleveland Clinic and he says if nothing shows it maybe idiopathic. My question are I used to crack my neck back and forth is it possible to damage both phrenics and also what would be my next step if he says idiopathic I just want to feel normal again. Not effecting my 02 levels is there anything that can be done just makes me feel horrible. Have you seen anyone that it just happened without a cause? I live in PA. Thanks for your time

So they stopped and diagnosed me with asthma. I was still have shortness of breath so they did a fluro x-ray and what do you know, I have a bilateral paralyzed diaphragm, my left side only . So now I’m going back to pulmonary in 2 weeks i am worried of what’s gonna happen next . I am a us army soldier currently serving I’ve been battling this for a year and just now found out . I can only assume that most of these folks with possible diaphragm issues in the older comments have gotten answers to their questions by now, however, anyone new to this comment section thinking they may have a possible paralyzed diaphragm to get a “Sniff Test”, which is an video X-ray taken of your chest cavity while standing and takes about 30 seconds as you take 2 quick sniffs, a few seconds apart through your nose, which records your lung reaction with regard to your diaphragm movement. I had a double lung transplant 9 months ago and wasn’t getting good results with my daily spirometer tests I have have to do which records your lung volume, and was still having shortness of breath, especially with short strenuous tasks. My transplant pulmonologist is satisfied that my phrenic nerve was damaged during surgery which has parallel my left diaphragm! I’ll be seeing a neurologist to find out exactly where the signal is broken! My doctor also told me to stay away from chiropractor’s, especially if the neck is involved!

About two years ago I've had difficulty breathing with chest pain. I've been to a cardiologist, gastroentorologist, pulmonologist and no one can nail down what it is. The pulmonologist only gave me a breath test and said it was fine about two years ago. The odd thing is, at the same time as the breathing issues happened, is started experiencing severly stuffy nose, stomach pain, insomnia, and it's worse after eating or doing cardio. I'm going to request the sniff test to see if this could be an issue but just curious if anyone else had any of these other symptoms simultaneously. I'd definitely fly to NJ to get this if it was the answer to two years of utter misery.

This past year I have been suffering with shortness of breath that continued to get worse to the point I am pretty much home bound now. I saw mutiple doctors who all dismissed my symptoms as anxiety. I became my own advocate and finally got my answers at the diahpgram center at Colombia/NY Presbyterian in NYC. I go for a phrentic nerve EMG and Sniff test to confirm their diagnoses. Would this be something Doctor K can help with ? I live in NJ .

Hello, my name is joey. I have been suffering from breathing problems for 4 years. It has debilitated me, and i cannot do much at all. It is particulerly harder to breathe lying down. It hurts to take a deep breathe and my breathing feels very restricted. I cannot relax. I have had heart exams and results come out fine. I do not have pulmonary clots, or pulmonary hypertension. I do not have copd. However, my pfts have shown a restricted defect, but doctors have told me it is asthma, yet nothing helps. I breathe with my shoulders, and neck. I cant really breathe with my abdomen as it feels to heavy. I am looking for help. If i could write to dr. Kaufman or send in my medical records that would be truly a great. Thank you.

I was in a motor vehicle accident, restrained passenger about a yr and a half ago. My breathing has been affected. I had a C2 extending into C3 fracture, and a lot of pain that stems from my left hip. What did the diaphragm paralysis feel like? I've mentioned phrenic nerve to all my physicians. One of them thinks it could be COPD, and one said Anxiety. Certain poses alleviate the tight band feeling around my diaphragm/stomach area, so some of the therapists are thinking it could be muscle related. I know you aren't a doctor, but I would like to hear what it felt like for you before the surgery, and how long the recovery was from the surgery, and if you recommend it or if I should follow this lead more. Thank you for sharing your story. Now I only wish Dr. Kaufman was closer to my area. Thankful for all the healthcare and that these specialists exist.

I hope you are finding answers Jessica. I am so exhausted in my search. I am looking for answers like you, hence my being here. I got tired of being dismissed as having anxiety or them asking me if i was depressed. I would rather have a doctor step up to the plate and say, "I don't know, but i will try my best to help you." This has never happened. LOL. i was recently found to have a paralyzed diaphragm, and it was not the doctor who discerned this. As he was ending his consultation with me. I asked can we go over the MRI together, because regardless of the notes the radiologist made, i know something is wrong. I could tell he did not want to review the MRI with me, but he dug deep for the patience to review them alongside of me. As he was clicking through the frames, I asked a question about what i saw and if he could explain what i was pointing out to him and he said that is peculiar and that should not be there. Sent me off to get a "sniff test" and this test confirmed paralyzed diaphragm. But what good is a diagnosis if you don't find the cause of it or the cure/remedy for it. My doctor has offered nothing other than it may spontaneously regain function. I don't have several years, I am suffering now and my whole quality of life has diminished greatly. I am glad I have a starting point and a confirmation now. So, Keep at it!! You will find answers

@@tristandangelo9073 Thank you.....and just wow. I never thought of asking a doc to review scans and images. A cardiologist told me it was anxiety before the accident ( after a gallbladder surgery my BP dropped to 110/70 as the norm and sometimes 100/60 which is very low, especially with a hr of 90-100). Funny enough, one of the surgeons from the GB surgery was there to repair some internal bleeding from the mva. It could be so many things, and I've asked my pcp for a referral to spine doctor.... I'm glad you figured yours out. That's amazing, rare, and awesome!!!
