I love how humble Mike is in this video. He understands that impressive, complicated drumming isn't what got Nickelback to where they are today, and that the simpler, laid back drumming and a simpler style in general is what helped Nickelback reach popularity (or infamy, whatever you wanna say). He also appreciates the choices taken on the original drum track and learns off it, which is a great thing. I love his remark hilarious about how he's just a "50 year old santa claus/prog guy". Amazing drummer.

Mike is a true veteran in terms of music sessions. We all knew him through DT or Liquid Tension, but if you listen to his work with Avenged Sevenfold, Winery Dogs and other stuff, clearly shows a great versatility.

True actully. He uses a massive kit on most of his stuff but he tells a story with it. Every change in the mood he mirrors with a change in his drumming. While he is playful he doesn't lose the emotional core of what makes the song. He is a storyteller, which is crazy for his instrument. I don't know any other drummer like this.

My uncle Sam was born with missing calves and feet and forearms and hands. He had a little non-moveable nub at the end of each "elbow", that's all. Same with his "legs". Yet he could drive a car, hunt with a rifle, and fish. He'd also beat us kids in wrestling most of the time. And some of us were as old as 15 and played football. So what you say about Portnoy having no feet yet still being able to play double bass, is likely true. If Sam could catch fish without arms I bet Sam could play double bass without feet. @@Jamesnpk

Agreed. I'm not a Nickelback guy but I'm super familiar with this song from its time as the WWE Raw theme, so to hear this version really emphasised what Mike actually does. It can be lost, or at least more subtle, with DT stuff as they're all doing the same maestro, next level building game with each other, but to take what is a super basic song with simple musicianship and then add one master...damn, it really makes it pop. I can't wait to hear what he'll do with DT.

The speed at which Mike reacts to his flub in the breakdown section, realizes what part he' s in, and instantly corrects within a second is masterful. That's how you recognize a true pro.

tbf the song works well live with the crowd getting involved with the "hey" bit. a double bass might take away from that.

@@benjambreegI think for the general (pop) audience the double bass as well as all the fills would have been to much. But I totally agree, it makes the song so much more interesting.

It’s too much man. You need to learn how to write a pop song. This is a very niche community watching this video. The average Joe just wants to get drunk with friends and sing along to some tunes. You cant do that if the vocals are covered up by thumping double bass

@jd0879 why does he need to learn to write a pop song? He basically said if Nickleback wants to get their balls back, as in not pop...

Snapiests Snare and Kick in History. He has the rest as well, but as soon as you hear the Snare and Kick you know it's him. It's not the mic'ing, he mutes the skin after every hit it seems. And steady like a metronome.
