I think they were to supplement the HSTs; these would do new stoppers and the HSTs would do the fast services
I love the livery I believe the turbostar units were still on the midland mainline until 2004 when the meridian voyagers took over
Thanks for posting this. I used to travel on the Turbostars from Market Harborough to London and Leicester. I remember how overcrowded the TS services were, but I still liked the vehicles and missed them when they were replaced. The first thing I did on a Meridian was to dislocate my shoulder in one of the toilet cubicles.
I remember going on these (as well as MM green HSTs) when I was a kid. This video is pure nostalgia. It’s almost as nostalgic to me as the ex-NSE/South Central liveried 455s/456s.
It is the best livery I had ever seen since. I always remember seeing these from my old Wellingborough house :) Great vid.
If you see a CrossCountry 170 numbered 170 1xx (170 101 to 170 117) it's one of these Midland Mainline ones. So glad this is captured and uploaded! None were in service in late 1998 / early 1999 then, just testing...?
My favourite will always be 170107.
I miss National Express Midland Mainline. It was the first privatised railway operator, as such as: GNER, Midland Mainline, Virgin (Cross Country and West Coast), Central Trains, Silverlink, Connex (Thameslink, Southern, etc.), SPL, Arriva, Stagecoach (Southwest Trains and Virgin), First (Great Western Railway, Northwestern, Hull, etc.), and so-fourth; that we all remember them like yesteryear and worship them till’ the day that we all die.
@pompeyrdabest thanks for comment and info . the staff were all pro the units i did ask them what they thought , did not speak to driver about them , no body minded me filming then either . i thought the livery was ok as well . i did enjoy filming this it was a good move after endless weeks of freight . i had forgotten this piece it was at the bigining of a newport tape. its for all the people who like units. cheers
@simpletimes222 This came about cause a friend of mine wanted to get these units i went along as company and filmed what i could , never thinking i would look at the video again , the tapes were stored in a cool dark place for 12 years , ive played them 3 times once to record to vhs and once to record to dvd and for youtube .i think i prefer st pancras then as to how it is now......thanks ...ian
East Midlands trains now have load of turbo stars replacing 153s 156s 158s

158s are staying so that EMR have enough stock to cover Liverpool-Norwich.
Very good video! Wish that these turbostars went to east midlands trains rather than cross country
The comment below is correct. All Midland MainLine 170's (Turbostars) went across the Central Trains in 2004, when Midland MainLine started to introduce the Class 222 Meridians as these had superior acceleration than the Turbostars. I miss the units as they were lovely and the MML livery was awesome.

Is overcrowded another reason
I have a bachmann class q70 of the class 170 in this livery! I do like that livery
Would be so amazingly odd to see a 170 at St Pancras now
1st June 1999 is when the MM 170's started operating (now at XC).
@60791 thanks i thought they might be a bit light weight , were they increased to 3 cars ?
A guess maybe 5 years ago the Eurostars went over to St Pancras .....but it could be longer...ian
Ironic that EMR are now getting more of these back, with 3 set's not long arriving from Southern, delivered to Derby Etches..... one set having been left in Etches, and the other two, been driven to an alt storage location (I believe somewhere near Chesterfield), whilst upgrades, repairs, paint etc are carried out.... this in turn, will displace EMR's current stock of 156 / 158 units. I believe faberoony90 has a vid of these ex Southern units arriving at Derby kzread.info/dash/bejne/gXh8u5RuZLyccaQ.html

158s are staying due to not having sufficient Regional stock to cover Liverpool-Norwich services. Also, the storage location near to Chesterfield is Barrow Hill.

@@brunaskarting116 bugger, wished they kept the needed 156's and not the 158's, especially as the toilets on the 158's are evil.

And London Midland
I think most of Midland Mainline went to Central Trains which eventually went to Crosscountry. I dont know for sure but i do remember this livery. I thought it was a decent livery to be honest. Brill footage any how
Now the units are belonged to Crosscountry
I thought it was in 1998 not 1999...
2018 XD
