Converting a Bachmann Class 170 (2 car) Turbostar to DCC

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Many thanks to KBRAILVIDEO in this joint video production. For this video we take you though (as best as we can) how to hard wire a Bachmann 2 car class 170 Turbostar DMU. As the Bachmann class 170 isn't DCC ready, it's a case of hard wiring this model. You'll need two decoders (one for each car), a soldering iron, solder, flux, wire cutters, & wire strippers.
The decoders we've used are Gaugemaster DCC26 Opti Small Decoder from www.scalemodelscenery.co.uk More of this model in action after this DCC conversion video to follow..... Thank you.

Thank you for the video. I manged to follow your instructions and it all worked perfectly first time. Very pleased as most of my 'projects' take a few versions before they work or I give up. I used a DC Concepts function decoder and an old Uhlenbrock decoder I had in my spare parts dept.

It was well paced and informative. The only different way I would have done it would be to have added an 8PIN socket, and not hardwired, so the chip could easily be replaced. Nevertheless you put together an excellent "how to".

Was going to go for a 8 pin socket. But as the Gaugemaster decoder i've used on this can be un-plugged off it's harness, it's another sort work around on the socket so to speak. Many many thanks on the feed back, very much appreciated :-)

Hi, thanks for the video. Did you ever make the video for converting the Bachmann class 158? I'm sure that would be much appreciated.

Hi Micheal, for the class 158 it's the same procedure as this one bar the top head light. Just converted a class 158 to DCC but do have another awaiting conversion. Will have a look at doing a video on that once i've got a couple of decoders for it.

Thank you so much for sharing this video of how to do it! Is the reason for the second decoder just for the lights in the dummy car? Reckon I may be as excited as your daughter. :-) Thanks Paul

You're welcome. The second car the dummy car needs a decoder for lights in that car, so hence fitting the decoder to it.

How would you do this for a 3 car version ? Cheers Matt

For the motorised center car, the red and black wires from the decoder go to the power pick up wires. The orange and grey wires on the decoder go to the motor. For the non motorised driving trailers, they are wired up the same as the one shown in this video. Many thanks.

Far as i know it's the same process for the Baccy' 158. I've got a couple 158's a waiting hard wiring to DCC. I'll do a video of that in due course. Kind regards.

That sounds like a good plan that :-) I may look at uprating the lighting whilst i'm at it, with one of the DCC lighting kits by Express Models.

I have 3 class 170 3-coach units, so I'm guessing that I'll need 3 decoders for each unit, 1 for the lights on either end and one for the motor which sits in the middle coach, then my 4 class 158's would be like your video - man the expense of it all never mind the time for someone like me who is not the most nimble with little wires and soldering irons, 17 decoders 😩

You could through wire it with mini plug/sockets between the coaches, that way only one decoder would be need. Various retailers do discounted multi decoder packs which will save you some money. The way to do it is bit by bit over time to help spread the cost.
