When I was in school, a few of the councilors would try and guide AA students towards manual labor or other jobs that didn’t require a degree! Good thing so many of us ignored this! I came from a family of teachers and we had one doctor so a degree was expected from us! A few didn’t get one but everybody doesn’t need one! I think a trade school is a better idea for some people that don’t need many of the extra courses that you may never use again. and many do get an Associates in whatever their field is. It just depends on the person

I had that same experience in High School in the 70's. Yes, this is what guidance counselors did back then. Also, my son was gifted and at first the counselor tried to say he needed Ritalin. Thankfully, one of his teachers had him tested and he was transferred and placed in mentally gifted classes. This made a difference when he was finally challenged and directed.

One didn't need to be African American to get a bad counselor!! My sister, who spoke 3 languages, was told she would make a wonderful secretary, ...because she had good handwriting! White teenager in the 60's!

@libertybabe6086 some teachers and counselors should know that not every child is an early bloomer. My daughter was an ardent reader and catches on fast, while my son was not. He took maths exam a few times and didn't pass at that time but he aces Engineering maths. Every child is wired differently.
