Musical influences from all over the world spanning the generations and genres keep creating new styles and yet so many times, you will hear a riff or a run, that sounds like something that already exists. Sometimes people criticize a song that sounds like an already existing song, but it can't be helped if you're influenced by it and pick it up, not necessarily on purpose. Music is universal and if a musician picks up a lick from another song and puts it in their own creation, it's a compliment. Thanks for the Reaction. Michael McDonald was huge to me and one very special love back in the 70s.

Drummer Jeff Porcarro, R.I.P. Bad cat! He was the drummer in the band Toto (Rosanna, & Africa). His brother Steve was keyboardist for that band & his dad was also a percussionist. Cool reaction as you clearly are involved with music yourself. Good ears! The late bassist Louis Johnson of Brothers Johnson (Stomp, & Strawberry Letter 23) worked closely with Quincy Jones, & you’ve heard him on Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall & Thriller albums, as well as George Benson’s Give Me The Night & many others. He mastered the technique called ‘thumbing & plucking’, which your heard on this track. Bassist hits lower notes with his thumb, & pulls higher notes with fingers. Mad funky! Larry Graham is credited with establishing that style, initially with Sky & Family Stone & his own Graham Central Station. Today you still have Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Michelle N’degocello, Bakithi Kumalo, Nathan East, & many others. You might wanna look for Bengali Indian, Mohini Dey lighting up cyberspace with her blazing bass style. 👍🏾🎶

Nate Dogg + Warren G sampled this! 🐕 RIP. Michael Macdonald first got big when he + Kenny Loggins wrote What a Fool Believes. The Doobie Brothers hired MM. They received a Grammy for Best Song in 1979. MM is a guest vocalist in a ton of songs, partial list: Yah Mo B There with James Ingram, RIP, Ride Like the Wind with Christopher Cross, This Is It with Kenny Loggins, I'll Be Over You with Toto, RIP Jeff Porcaro. As for Jeff Porcaro, he his brother Steve + Steve Lukather were busy in 1982. In addition to this, they played in their band Toto, Donna Summer, Chicago + in Michael Jackson's Thriller, each musician having a bestselling album! 🤯🤯🤯🤯 David Foster, who did not work with MM or Toto, worked with Chicago + MJ. In addition JP, Lukather + were working with The Tubes in 1981 + 1983, both albums bestsellers! 🤯🤯 RIP Jeff Porcaro. This is 4/4. Just some syncopation added so the groove feels different.

Steve Lukather was best friends with Eddie Van Halen, and since Luke was doing session work on Thriller, he was (I think) the guy who got Eddie to play the Best It solo for Quincy Jones and MJ. So it should be no surprise to know that Michael McDonald was tapped by Van Halen producer Ted Templeman to co write "I'll Wait" on VH's album, 1984 when Eddie ran into songwriter's block. Though he got no songwriting credit, if you give the tune a listen and you'll instantly recognize Michael's stylized keyboard composition but with the song rendered through the VH MUSIC MACHINE.

Good Reaction. You know your music my man! Ack all comments below, except that I thought McDonald used John McFee from Doobies instead of Lukather from Toto on lead guitar. At least he did on the Soul Train. Those were his two sisters singing the female background vocals. Louis Johnson from "the Brothers Johnson", well it just doesn't get any funkier than that. And Jeff Porcaro was one of the best ever in my book. (Steely Dan, Toto, Boz Scaggs). Listen to Jeff on the "Lowdown" intro from the Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees album, or the "Rosanna" intro from Toto. He was a creative genius, God rest his soul.

The zoom in "jesus" line in the intro cracks me up every time. Beat was sampled because it's just so perfect. There's a mashup that's SO good. Oh shit. Good to find a channel where you know music itself. 4/4 for sure but with such a smooth swing in it. Think the clav is ahead of the beat in some spots to accent it, I'm hearing that in the build beginning at 4:41 with the clav hitting before the 2 and 3, and I think the guitar is doing a "3 in 4" 8ths thing in the next section. Honestly its late enough I lost my ability to count lol

Really enjoy your commentary JayRah! You should do a reaction to a less known Michael McDonald song "To Make A Miracle".
