Michael Manring "The Enormous Room"
Музыка
Michael Manring performs "The Enormous Room" in our average sized living room. This house concert date was Sunday December 2, 2007. For the gear geeks, the signal path is through a Boss GT-3 pedal board, to an Eden Navigator Stereo Preamp, to a QSC 1000w amp, split to two 4x10s (Ampeg and Glockenklang). In other words, we aren't using half of what's in the rack. (addendum) For what it's worth, this is MY rig, only the basses and the Boss Pedal Board are Michael's. So rip on me, not him for the gear.

Of all the virtuoso solo bass players around Manring is one of the few, if not the only one, to capture my attention on a deep emotional level. His playing is not just a showoff, a showcase of awesome and terribly complicated techniques. It's beautiful, haunting, otherwordly music.

Definitely. I think thats one of the nicest things about this video. Its a performance, but its not ostentatious. He seems so humble with his talent and it focuses all of the attention onto this incredible piece. I dig it.

That’s not just any fretless. That’s a custom built Zon, from a master luthier. I’ve got a beautiful Warmoth z-bass I’m in love with. I’m not worthy of a Zon.

I always get tears in my eyes when I see that grown up man at 1:25 looking in awe at Michael, just like a little boy who just saw the coolest thing in his life!
I've been a Windham Hill lover (since the mid '80's) & following Michael's music through the years. Somehow this performance slipped by my greedy lil' ears. At this point in my life, I am a single middle aged Mom raising 2 kids with autism. I don't have the luxury of being able to get away for vacations & my stress level can get very high. I find 2 things in life help me to cope (& sometimes escape into my own head): my own sense of spirit & music. Michael has no idea just what a joy his gift of music brings to me.

+Catherine G I feel the same about his music. It can heal for some reasons. I had the chance to see him twice in France, and have an autograph of him signed on the DVD "Resonance". I would like to add one thing : with such beautiful music, words become useless. God bless you Catherine.
Stuff like this makes you feel like you could live forever and still experience something new. Come to think of it, that’s exactly what art is.
Whenever i see a person who is at the highest level of their craft im always astonished that they wear pants, they brush their teeth, they eat food...like they haven't advanced that aspect of their lives and it makes me feel really special because i also wear pants. Ya know?
This man proves that you don't need to play 16ths at 200bpm or slap all the time to have incredible technique. I don't think I've ever spoken a word while listening to this song, how many hundreds of times I've listened to it.
How can this performance even be possible? The incredible memory he must have to be changing the tuning in his strings constantly to feed both the bass notes and the HARMONICs too is insane! Its as if he added 4+ strings and created a new instrument entirely out of the bass sequence of notes/chords. To get so much more out of the old stodgy 4 string bass is amazing to me. I feel lucky to have a recording I played on where Michael accopanied myself with Carl Weingarten.

Michael's tone and these frequencies just completely transport me. I feel like crying like a baby at how much I feel from this piece. I just wonder how Michael can think about the piece and all these harmonic changes with the hips hots etc at the same time. Mind blown, heart open. Thanks for sharing
This peice is one of the most beautiful ones ive ever heard on bass. It just gives a good deep fealing inside.I'ts amazing how music can make you feel good inside.

here I am, 13 years later after watching this video and discovering Mr. Manring for the first time. thanks youtube and thank you Mr. Wilson.
He's done this mix of through and circular composition. It's so beautiful. I'm sad It's taken me 15 years to have heard this masterpiece. Thank you for sharing!
I use this video to fall asleep daily, it is pure magic
There is some real magic going on here, the ending gives me goosebumps every time!
Not only is Manring a musical genius, but songs like this are incredibly soothing to listen too
Some real beautiful stuff. I am drummer and LOVE MIchael. I saw him play in a music store concert. Just amazing person inside and out. he has a real love for the instrument and pulling everything out of it!!!! GO FOR IT MICHAEL... It's too bad the masses don't get into Michael Manring......
People like Mr Manring make it all worth it. Thank you!
Man! Emotion, emotion, and more EMOTION!
words cannot describe what i'm thinking right now... i'm not even a bass player, just the fact that he's such a great musician that he can make you feel exactly what he's feeling through his playing. absolutely marvellous.
This is proof that, in the right hands, a fretless bass can be one of if not the most beautiful instruments out there. It also doesn’t hurt to have one of the best bassists of all time playing it.
I love this song. It's really made me rethink my playing and particularly playing a solo. A solo doesn't have to be fast and filled with as many note as possible. Michael's playing is so interesting and the song has such a beautiful melody. It just slowly unfolds. Ingenious!
Makes me think of my dad I don't know why but when I'm alone and I listen to this I think of all the fun I had with my dad I have been a foster father for almost 20 years and I recently after a long time adopted a little boy and gave him my fathers name
Seriously, an orgasm just exploded in my ear and flooded it with beautiful harmonics and bass notes. So beautifully delectable. I could close my eyes and listen forever!!! This and "Selene" are my favorite.
This is the music equivalent of floating around in deep space. Beautiful song and Great musician!
beautiful.. just perfect
Somehow Hedges still lives... I love this song deeply.

I stumbled on this looking for Micheal Hedges and Micheal Manring collaborations, as I am a guitarist who loved Hedges music, but this blows me away. I now see such a different view of Manring. Thank you Brian Wilson for posting this so many years ago.
I've watched tons of bassist's videos. This is the one I've said "holy shit" to the most. Holy shit.
Never heard of him until now...mind=blown
Intelligent and beautiful music!
I love the guys face at 1:25, looking at Manring like he is some kind of deity. It's really good that someone with this much talent in such an unusual art is being recognised for how amazing he is :)
First time I heard this piece, it brought me to a better place. It still does.
Wonderful. Very relaxing and yet surprising :)
wonderful, what a mastery, thank you ;)
An enormous talent. Beautiful song that brings tears to my eyes each listen. Brilliant playing. I could've sworn if I close my eyes I was listening to the album.
Wow, I liked this. I've heard other stuff by him. Some does nothing for me, some can change my day if listen to it with the sunrise. He really has it in his hands.
I bet the designers of that bridge and those tuners never thought they'd be used in such a way. It's really amazing how it works, and how much he has to be familiar with alternate tunings to switch so often and quickly. Pretty awesome.

Manring helped design that bass. It's called the Zon Michael Manring Hyperbass, so I think the designers how some idea how the bass would be used.

EAP Raven The Hipshots came around before the Hyperbass, and I sort of suspect they didn't expect to see four of them mounted on one bass. The bridge was designed specially for the Hyperbass, though.
Brilliant. The result of 10,000 hours of practice no doubt.

When I first discovered this song (and Michael), I was playing in a band. I showed him to every one of my bandmates and I said, "I want to be able to play like him." Everyone except the singer basically scoffed at me. Michael is one of the main reasons I strive to be a better bass player. I've only been playing for about four years come Christmas, but I think I still have a long way to go. A VERY long way to go. This is, in my own way, an "aspiration chain", of what I strive for: Technique: Michael Manring, Geddy Lee, David Ellefson (for picking), Geezer Butler, John Myung, Martin Mendez Humility for the Instrument: Michael Manring, Geddy Lee Experience: Geezer Butler, Geddy Lee, John Entwistle Rather corny way of looking at it, but these are all my main aspirations when it comes to the bass. But I hope that by playing with many different bands and seeing those still alive in concert, maybe I could learn something more by watching them or understanding them as people.

I've been listening to Michael since 1984( I've been playing since 83 ).....he still makes me feel that way. I had the good fortune of meeting him at a small show and watching from this same distance. A kind , gracious, and gentle soul indeed.
Absolutely ethereal and beautiful piece of music right here. I'm just completely captivated whenever i hear Manring play.
won't you listen to this just all day long?
Ok you build whole universes with those bloody fingers, so what? EEEHHHH? Ehm... ... ehr... A bass that becomes the only thing you need to create. Thanks.
I just can't get over this bass composition and performance!
My favorite solo bass composition. Amidst all the tuner pyrotechnics is a gorgeous melody and some fantastic (and unexpected!) changes.
I feel unworthy of the bass, every time I watch Mr. Manring performing anything.
Made me thing of opening up a book and looking at the fresh new young world evolving Before humanity started to murder it. Amazing how music can inspire you. :')
The most perfect synthesis of instrument, artist and composition. This is musicianship exemplified, and my favorite version of this piece.
Michael is definitely a musician's musician. His inner musical quality is so natural, and his passion, and enjoyment for it is what I think makes him so good.

@@wizman440 A number of years ago when Michael was in the Chicago area, I had the good fortune of attending a couple of his SWR clinics at local music stores on consecutive nights. While not as intimate as this performance, it was a real treat to interact with Michael in small-group settings. He's such a sweet guy and his skills leave me speechless every time I see/hear him play! At once clinic someone commented that what he does "sure beats playing Led Zeppelin covers" to which Michael replied, "I'd probably make more money doing Led Zeppelin covers!". Thanks for sharing this video!!!
