More Manring magic from our house concert December 2, 2007. Some good closeups of the fingering toward the end. Enjoy!

As far as I know, he uses two basses in the performance at wizman440's house, and I think they are both either custom-made or his signature models. One (this one) can change tuning from the head only. It is fretless, with an extended fretboard and extra deep cutaway to reach the extra-high notes. If you watch some of the other vids, you will see a tan one with a super-deep cutaway and extended fretboard, but any single or combination of strings can be retuned from the bridge as well as the head.

@pizzicato1615 жыл бұрын
I said that same thing when I first saw Manring. In a lot of his other tunes he does a lot more then just the E to B on the low string. This can be played on a 5 string. I can play it myself on the 6 string that I have. The detuning makes more sense on his other tunes.

It is tuned EADG, however the detuner lowers the E string down to a low B. All 4 of the strings have the same detuners at the headstock. This is my favorite of Manrings basses. I even prefer this one over the hyperbass.

A fivestringer will sometime cause more harm than good; with all the chords and dissonant sounds in Manring's playing, it may well be a disturbing element. Not to mention the feel, playing a five is not the same as a four. And love the video, fun to see guys who look like they really get a kick out of performing!
@pizzicato1615 жыл бұрын
Piccolo bass strings are just the same EADG up an octave. So it's like the lower 4 strings of your guitar on a bass. But on his Hyperbass the tuning can be changed to whatever he wants.

Actually, I learned this song, and the way I did it, anyway, it's more a form than a piece of music. there's the Pre-chorus and chorus, which is the part from 1:07 to 1:52, and other than that, there's just the verses, which are completely improvisation. Then there's the bridge after the second pre-chorus, and then a 3rd verse, pre-chorus/chorus -> outro. The "Written" parts aren't terribly complicated, so this song can basically be fit to all different skill levels, within reason.

No, they're way different. Look at the shapes, for one thing. The Manring Hyperbass has a less traditional shape; the red one he uses in this vid is shaped like a typical bass, just with a super-deep cutaway to match the extended fretboard. The tan one is wider and has different curves. His sig also has a custom bridge that can retune one, two, three or all four strings at the same time. Between the two retuning systems, he can retune like a third of an octave in either direction, up or down.
