Having met Michael and had the pleasure of chatting with him, you come to realize that his music is who he is. Gentle, kind, meditative, thoughtful, playful and bemused. He makes the music he wants to hear the way he wants to hear it. If you don't like his music, then in a way, you don't like him because his expression on the bass is as honest as it comes.

That is a beautiful way of describing a man
This man is at a completely different level of understanding harmony

The harmony is fairly standard but the way he achieves his sound is incredible and the technique is next-level.
Beautiful composition... clearly this is a piece that could be arranged for any instrument and sound lovely. Manring is not JUST an amazing bassist... he's an amazing musician and composer.

Glen Denig It’s good to see someone actually defined (or persons of this talent) as a Bassist and not a Bass Player..!!
That's like, your opinion man. This song brought a tear to my eye. I was there when this video was recorded and it was an incredibly powerful moment to me. For you to say it lacks any real "depth and soul" is almost insulting
I have been mesmerized by this song from the first time I heard it in "92". It is like a mantra. I love how Michael brings his production sound with him. I saw him with my favorite, Michael Hedges in Maine along with the Flecktones. He really was the perfect bassist to accompany Hedges.
This is quite frankly the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard.
That bass changed more tunings in one song than my guitar does in a year
Some novices just don't seem to get the tuning aspects of Manrings songs. The tuning is part of the song. That's why he uses a hyperbass to be able to achieve a wide range or notes and octaves while playing. He can flip one switch or push one button and attain crazy range and sound. It's all the more impressive that it is a 4 string bass.. and good luck trying to get his hyperbass.. the hyperbass without his custom bridge is about 6 thousand. I asked for the custom bridge and they turned me down and said when they do make one you are looking at 9k+.. insane.

There ok.. i appreciate the music but personally rather have a decent pbass and a couple pedals..you can pretty close this for a lot less
He Really Plays The Bass...Like A Gentlemanring !...
the best fretless bass composition I've ever heard
The intro he's doing here where he doesn't let any of the string talk through is like... whoa. A whole new experience. Crazy.
It's me or it is impossible to not only watch it once.. mesmerizing
Such an amazing player. Saw him with. Michael Hedges several times. Was he a student of jaco? He has definitely found his own voice. I just watched a documentary about Jaco and all the musicians were talking about how there has been no one to touch him. I disagree. Michael is doing some imteresting things. Taking it to another level. Its been 36 years since the sad tragic death of jaco. Lets never forget his greatness or his inovations but lets make room for a virtuoso like Michael Manring. Wishing Mr pastorious could have conquered his deamons but no such luck. Michael seems like a very together individual this is 2011 ? I need to look up what he is doing today.

I could watch this for 6 hours straight. So awesome- seeing bass in a whole new light :)
I like this version better than the DVD version!
The soul of four strings...wonderfull sound...
Chills every single time I listen to this.
Thank you Dear Mickael for being such an inspiring source for bass players!
Michael is amazing...one of my favorites! The name of the song is "Selene".

Here in 2021 & wow 😊 👍
Dear Santa ,I would like a hyperbass for Xmas. I swear, I'll be good
This dude is on another level...not sure which one though....😁
Siempre amare esta canción hasta el día de mi muerte haha!
The Jeff Beck of the bass. This is transcendent.
Juste pour ce morceau , Michael Manring alias "L'homme qui sonne", doit avoir avoir sa place au Panthéon des musiciens.
None of you could recreate this and nor would you want to. He is an artist expressing himself in his own way, as you do. If it is not your thing then that's ok, move on.
Ladies and gentlemen, now that Mr. Manring has finished tuning his bass guitar, he would like to play something for you.

there always HAS TO BE at least one negative individual on here, like "fretbuzz59"who has little or nothing good to say about new directions.I only read a few of his(hers)acidic remarks and that was enough.I would not be surprised if Fretbuzz59 also hates the Zon bass and the effects used!Its just art man,Manring can play anything,but chose to innovate.
Innovative
My phone does well with listening to bass parts. This needed headphone to hear it all.
The intro reminds me of the Swedish poem Aranira(I forget how to spell it)
Just play the thing for a change
I don’t see him as just a bass player in the normal sense, but a musician that likes the tones he can get from a bass that aid in making beautiful music. Coupled with that Zon, which is just made for him, figuratively and literally. I mean, I’m more of a funky P-Bass kind of guy, totally opposite to this kind of thing, but I appreciate it nonetheless.
Is he playing through that markbass?

It really doesnt matter, just curious.
To play a song almost exclusively with harmonics, you need to KNOW what you're doing, and certainly Michael knows his stuff...
This is how to play bass.
Sounded like Robert Fripp in the beginning!
It's like this bass was made to his image
@JonHop1
3 жыл бұрын
It literally was. Him and Zon literally made it for him piece by piece 100% custom built to Michael's specifications, with Zon's amazing craftsmanship and machining.
JACO LIVES !
Somebody. Tell me. What effect pedal is he using?
@mindfuc
5 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure its clean, just using his Zon super bass.
@MrGul
5 жыл бұрын
@@mindfuc It's absolutely NOT a clean signal - there's a lot of reverb in the sound to create that kind of ambience (he mentions that in interviews, too). As to precisely which effect pedal he's using, I don't know - but pretty much any decent reverb pedal/rack unit should be able to get you at least close to this kind of reverb.

Does Mike have drop tuning on all his tune keys ?? Sounds preeetttyyy coooool. WoW Edit: And what does he have on his bridge, just further drop tuners? Cheers
@stethoscanomaly

Hipshot xtenders for each tuner, and the bridge has a very complex system allowing for three different tunings. It's really complex. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kW2AybeEe6bTdNY.html

Hip shots on all strings and detunable bridge. $10K bass designed by him and Zon as an experiment. Amazing Instrument. I have the Hyperbass but without the bridge Michael has
@BenCDaugherty

That bridge is probably the most expensive part of that bass
He should get together with Percy jones
Usually I can hear the song in Michael's work, but this one was too random and abstract. It took me a couple of minutes to realize he was playing, not tuning his Hyperbass...and I LOVE his work!!!
@adroit57

Yeah because this song is impossible on a standard bass without being able to raise and lower the keys.
What do you mean 'gimmicky'? Crap like Nikki Manaj and Lady Gaga. Not to mention Bullshnae pop music is gimmicky. Michael is one most talented bass players on the planet. I would spend my hard earned money to see him play than the ones I mentioned above.

Don't feed the trolls.
I first discovered this player and his unique style about a month ago. Now after ive seen and heard his many pieces i feel like i feel when i listen to highly specialized music,it tends to get quite repetitive,and not in a good way. But his technique and his use of mechanical levers to alter the notes is pretty amazing. I see this man more as an performance artist. I would like to see him in the role of more traditional bass player so i could get a reference as to what his real style is. Now he is masking himself in these techniques and soundscapes etc. But he is good at what he does.

Yet so difficult to so well.
LOL.
so what music does have depth and soul to you? I'm insulted because given the technical prowess and how much soul he actually pours into his performance, it's still not full appreciated because somehow it's perceived as "gimmicky". Gimmicky is Michael Angelo Batio. Gimmicky is the myriad of "drifting" rip offs that have sprung up ever since Andy Mckee went viral. This is pure. At least to me >:(
Why be insulted? After all, it's only, like, my opinion, right? To me this stuff has the depth and soul of a flowery Hallmark card.
@JonHop1

Opinions can be insulting.. Especially when they are very ignorant in nature.
Obviously inflections of one instrument don't necessarily translate to other. Decades ago, transcribers of rock guitar developed ways to convey some of the idiosyncratic things rock players do. If I found this Manring's stuff the least bit interesting, instead of mind-numbingly boring, I might be open to his techniques & the tricked-out bass. OTOH, Stanley Jordan makes "real" music (as opposed to soundscapes), & I can't stand that either. Though that's b/c of his sound more than the substance.
Nonsense. Bach's fugues can be played on any standard keyboard instrument, using standard techniques. What's more, they could be transcribed note-for-note for configurations of non-keyboard instruments. This new age rubbish can only be played on this non-standard instrument, using non-standard techniques. It's a gimmick.
@carsoncityairsoft

fretbuzz59 you really aren’t very smart. Why is your definition of a piece of “music” (as you keep saying) something that can be transcribed onto another instrument? This doesn’t make sense on any level of thinking. If you didn’t like it then why did you waste your time and my own brain cells in commenting?
All his compositions like this sound alike. Music composed for specialized instruments rarely has any real substance, and this is no exception. It's gimmicky, and lacks any real depth and soul.
@carsoncityairsoft

fretbuzz59 huh that’s weird, you commented five different times saying the exact same thing over and over again, and yet I’m surprised to see no content on your channel. Even six years after you commented you’re still only an internet troll who doesn’t have the skill or knowledge to put his money where his mouth is. Fret buzz indeed.

"Music composed for specialized instruments"... No dude, the instrument was designed by him to do exactly what he needed... It's like Tosin Abasi and his guitar... It's a new level of musicians. The "depth and soul" are not in music itself... They're inside the listener.
