    I see how there are discrepancies with the other games regarding Samus' freezing up against Ridley, but I actually liked how it actually made her human. She wasn't necessarily scared of Ridley; she had PTSD. That's why they showed the flashback and then portrayed her as a child. It's a lot more realistic, in a sense. I think another reason why she froze up was because she thought she had finally beat Ridley, but he seemed to keep coming back.

    I agree with pretty much everything in this review; while the story is pretty dumb (seriously, the subplot with "the deleter" is just kind of forgotten and never addressed), the gameplay is pretty fun. I like that there are mini-boss encounters all over the place, and the setting (a facility engineering creatures to be used as bioweapons) is just as brilliant an idea as it was in Fusion. Something I've always thought, but never really heard anyone talk about, is how this game is essentially a Ninja game with a Metroid skin. Think about it; Samus is agile, has the sense move or whatever it's called for dodging, and regains energy by standing still and concentrating. If you told me that Team Ninja presented a half-finished ninja game to Nintendo and they decided to re-brand it as Metroid (a la Kirby's Epic Yarn) I would absolutely believe you.

For the review of this game is the most fair review has ever been made, or that will ever exist. No moar months of anything though. Just do things at your own pace. Oh and XD That whole "REMEMBAH ME?" Debacle was intense feels yo. Intense feels. Which game are you thinking or reviewing next? I can imagine how exhausting that last one was. Its gonna be thanksgiving soon.

    That's actually bullshit. THEY CREATED HER to be a badass. We filled in the gaps because she herself portrayed those attributes and did not submit to emotion so frequently being hardened from experience which was an attribute. She receives no recognition for her past feats that topple regular bounty hunters in stature. No, Mr. Nfreak, it wasn't that we didn't understand her character, it was the developers that didn't understand her character and could not possibly write emotions into a female character without making her seem absurdly fragile at the crack of a whip.

  • @NaveedMohebbi

    @NaveedMohebbi

    The writer and director of Other M was the same as the director and one of the developers of the original Metroid so to say it wasn't his vision for Samus from the beginning is a complete assumption and something we'll never know unless Sakamoto comes out and says it himself. In Metroid 2 you could see the slight emotions portrayed by Samus when saving the infant Metroid. Then in Fusion, there is a lot of backstory to Samus as a character. Everyone seems to forget about Fusion.

    ***** yeah... it's called fan feedback. Same reason why there were an absurd amount of fanservice to the Dark Souls community in Dark Souls II with even an item going so far as to quote Solaire. Even without the fanbase, he already created a stoic character FAR different than the manga realized game he went for in Other M. I implore you to find how these two characters can even be the same person with the background information presented. I never said female characters couldn't exhibit emotion. Look at how successful the Walking Dead managed to create human characters. It's just that the manga version of Samus is too illogical and inane to fit in with the serial version.

  • @NaveedMohebbi

    @NaveedMohebbi

    GothaBillsAndDeath I guarantee this had nothing to do with fan feedback. Ever since Fusion which was way back in 2001, Sakamoto seemed to have a direction HE wanted to take the story of Metroid. Remember the Prime games had nothing to do with him. Also the manga is not canonical so I don't know why you're bringing that up.

  • @GothaBillsAndDeath

    ***** The reason I mention the manga is because it directly took after more from the manga's history of Samus than her exploits from other games. She wasn't the iteration of previous games and somehow grew motherly emotions to an entity that reacted off instincts whereas previous versions would've explained her feelings in a much different light. She has this constant need to explain EVERY FUCKING THING that happens and make introspective observations, sometimes simply repeating what someone has said. This isn't inspiring or letting new Samus emit emotions better, this makes her completely an incompetent clone. Never once complaining about the idiocy her higher ups force her to do when in the most pragmatic sense, it would've been exceedingly better if they hadn't limited her in certain locations. Never once using her credibility as a proven Bounty Hunter spanning from across multiple worlds with incredible success as a bargaining chip or at least as an excuse to defy these idiots when their rules become hazardous to her life and the operation.

    ***** Not only that, she freezes so many times next to monsters. She's so in "love" with Adam almost to a degree that Twilight couldn't beat with Kristen Stewart that she never complains about illogical choices and constantly contemplate what Adam would do WHEN SHE DID THIS CRAP ALREADY. It's this mooping, whining and complaining that I hated about her as a character. Her freezing KILLS PEOPLE. The character that has saved the universe multiple times through intergalactic battles has Naruto like flashbacks when she could easily gun creature down and people die because of her incompetence. I'm talking about numerous other times other than Ridley which is a whole piece of annoying all on it's own because the creature isn't built upon, it isn't given it's own momentum and progression for me, a guy who doesn't read the manga, to appreciate with the same amount of fear faux-Samus exhibited. And I'm not even the biggest fan of the Metroid series. I don't even want to know how hard of a blow this had to be for people who were fans of Metroid.

    Not played that much of the Metroid series games, but I can see the gameplay looks really reminiscent of earlier titles, just in a 3D setting. What always pissed me off is the absolute lack of respect Samus gets in the game, by this point in the timeline Seamus has completely wiped out the Metroid race, Destroyed planet zebes and completely annihilated the threat of Phazon thus saving the Universe, SINGLE HANDEDLY, has Adam not heard of her accomplishments she has routinely taken out god like aliens and yet he still treats her like a grunt, and then the game has you try to believe that one of the soldiers was gonna have her eliminated, are you kidding Planet destroying, God Killing, overall badass Samus Aran was gonna be killed by one of the federation soldiers, the same soldiers that die by the dozens and Samus constantly has to save, oh and the icing on the cake has to be that Metroid Fusion takes place after this, and how does fusion begin, WITH SAMUS WORKING WITH THE FEDERATION AGAIN! Seriously after they tried to kill her she still is gonna work with them, Fuck you Sakamoto

    I know how you feel. I just beat the game a couple days ago, and since then I've tried to find reviews and videos that doesn't bash the game into the ground, just because they didn't like one flaw. It's like it's a crime to actually like this game. I actually liked the story too. Yeah there are some holes in term of the chronology of the series, but when I play a game, I don't look at the context with other games in the series, at least not the first time around. Yeah sure the voice acting could have been better, but most of Samus' monologue is (in my opinion) just her writing/recording her log book.

    Punyaha Mukhopadhay Actually I found it to be a good Metroid game though very linear, but it really reminded me of Super Metroid a lot. I think those expectations people have to the franchise come from the prime trilogy and I haven't played those. I just don't find them appealing and I'm not good at first person shooters. Yes I do realize you don't just run around and shoot enemies, but you can't deny the fact that beating the bosses and enemies requires you to have at least some first person shooter abilities.

    My main problem with Adam was not that he told Samus what to do but how he behaved; he seemed like a giant jerk for no reason at all. And I just didn't care about him dying, which is a problem. Adam could've been the biggest jerk in the world if he was a fun character to have around but he's not I was bored of him after the first hour of game play...

    3:11 exactly! adam telling samus when to use stuff is just like that part of a Metroid game where you have to start with nothing. even I realized that after playing the game more. and the reason they showed a flashback of samus as a 3 year old is because she was recording the most scarring memory in her childhood and the gameplay realy isn't so bad when you get used to it

    It's a shame no one talks about this or when they do, they completely missed the point... Samus stated in the beginning that she's been having nightmares about the events of Super Metroid, yes this includes her 'final' confrontation with Ridley. By this time, she's probably figured that there wasn't away for him to come back, as the entire planet was blown up (And she was also told that there wasn't anything on her suit that could be used to revive anything *cough cough*). The point is, she was already unstable before even arriving at the ship, and meeting up with Adam was... Odd... To say the least. But the whole Ridley scene completely caught her off guard.

  • @ThrillingDuck

    @ThrillingDuck

    That's a very good point, but I think most people are still thrown by the game's chronological place. I happen to think that scene would have been really cool in a re-imagining of the first game, but considering this is Samus's FOURTH encounter with him, it's just a little harder to swallow is all. The way I see it, this should have been her reaction either her first time fighting him or MAYBE her second (in like a desperate why won't you stay dead sort of way, seeing as he did murder her parents right in front of her). But to actually FREEZE UP on her fourth encounter after never visible reacting previously is just a bit much :P Out of context though, I really enjoy that scene XD

    ***** The only pixel hunt I had trouble with was the one with the green blood on the green grass. Maybe the first one, but that really shouldn't count as it's a new mechanic being presented to me, of course it's confusing. All other places they kinda gave you a hint at what to look at. Like when you spot MB they show her from the back looking at Samus. The moving plant when you see Ridley (little birdie) the first time.

    As bad as it may be, you would think that from all of the focus on the story that the game was actually a Metroid movie that came out, not you know, a game. I understand that it was the most controversial aspect, but when it comes down to it I play games mostly for the gameplay and the story is a distant second. Thanks for actually reviewing the gameplay unlike most other reviews of it I see.

I've honestly not finished Other M, only getting as far as that ridiculous Varia Suit segment. [I literally gave up at that point after dying]. From what you've said though and what I've played I completely agree with you, I don't think it is a bad game, but it is an awful Metroid game. I was actually saying points out loud right before you said them :P I will definitely play through the whole of Other M when I get to it, currently doing a series of Metroid in chronological order so it will get its time ha. Anyway great video as usual, keep up the great work :) I'll make sure to check out your channel more seeing as youtube doesn't want me watching. Also I'm curious what kind of Metroid game are you most looking forward to seeing come out? A 2D or 3D game? I love this game. The graphics are AMAZING for Wii, looks PS3/Xbox 360 quality. The music is pretty decent. The story, characters, and voice acting are really sweet. I love Samus' voice actress in this game and I wish she'll return in future games. And the gameplay is fun and addicting. My only complaint, and this is a major problem, is the thing where Adam won't let you use your weapons. But I'd be a fool to let that stop my enjoyment of Metroid Other M. I can't rank it any lower than 9/10. BTW, the way Samus' PTSD about Ridley: wouldn't you act the same if a monster killed your parents, you swore you killed it, but it comes back? So I completely understand her PTSD.

    I read the manga just last night. The Manga is often brought up as a defense for the Ridley scene, but in reality, the Manga does more to contradict Other M than support it, EVEN the Ridley scene, now I think that scene is horribly overdone, but the fact still remains, in the manga Samus makes it exceedingly clear that she's gotten over it, she faces Ridley again and her exact words when Ridley tanuts her about being a crybaby are "Im not who I was before" and she anihilates him. The Manga doesn't support Other M

    Though I still haven't played Other M, I think Samus should always have a voice and emotions. Other M just pushed it in too quickly. The Ridley scene was a bit absurd (and a lot more absurd) if you're talking about the difference from the Prime 3 reaction, but the flashback itself is kinda cool. I do agree that it's very flawed, and she hasn't finished of Omega Ridley so the reaction would have been more justified if Ridley was destroyed in Prime 3

    I guess we all have different opinions. Maybe I'm one of the more positive ones when regards to Metroid Other M, since I totally loved the game. First of all, game looks and sounds great, secondly it plays awesome. Voice acting bad? Maybe again I have different taste, I think her voice acting was quite good. Maybe I compare female voice acting to e.g. Felicity in Arrow, since she's terrible :P . Yeah they took riscs, they made it into their own Metroid game. Of course I also missed the backtracking, but on the other hand, it was fresh and I really didn't mind adjusting to a newer, maybe simpler approach. I thought the story was kinda nice. I do understand your point about Riddley, but I'm really not bothered by it. This game showed her human side, I looked at it in a positive way. It was an emotional scene. Besides this, I think it's a good first approach on a 3D/2D Metroid, and I wish they'd make an improved version on 3DS, instead of that nonsense Metroid game they introduced now on E3. I'm also a Metroid fan, but I really despised Hunters (that REALLY was a bad Metroid game), and I guess I'll also not like this one. Not saying it''s a 10, but I think it's a good game really. I really enjoyed the gameplay, boss fights were cool. Admitting, that part where you can use the Varia suit after that boss fight, was a stupid design decision. So yeah, that one was shameless :P . On the other hand, it did make the part harder, and I do like hard games (Dark Souls ;) ).

I usually don't like motion controlled games at all but switching between fps mode and 2.5d is done really well. The boss fights are amazing as well. I haven't had this much fun since I played Super Metroid way back in the day!

    They should have kept Samus as a silent protagonist. Making her talk was like if they made Link talk. It just wouldn't be the same. Nintendo fucked up.

    I tend to agree on that point. Although, it would have been even worse if Samus was a silent protagonist in Other M the way it is.

    also, I had the worst time in finding those "go fish" moments. like literally 40-60 minutes just looking in a dark room. I HAD to go online to find them. that made Metroid other m a 4/10 to 0/10 its literally worthless to me and I don't think it should have been made. I'd much rather have another Metroid fusion AND zero mission which somehow, are 10/10 games to me and I play them every year because I love them to death. idk if anyone else loves them as much as me, but that's true love to me. :-)

    you made a misspelling in the description "Did you know if you put the M in from of Other it spells Mother?" it should say "Did you know if you put the M in front of Other it spells Mother?" front front front please write this word 50 times on a piece of paper then correct your spelling please.

    Ohboy. I'm one of the many fans that absolutely detests Other M. And while I could sit here and rant and rave about why I despise it, I won't. Everything people hate about it, myself included, has been said to death. All I can really say is that Miyamoto has pretty much given Metroid back to Retro after the failure of Other M (confirmed through a recent article). On that note, based on the poor sales of Other M--it took 17 months for it to finally sell 1 mil copies globally, contrary to Nintendo's goal of selling 1 mil at the end of the year it was released (2010)--it's safe to say that we may never see another Metroid game like this. Nintendo realized the mistake that was made. It's difficult to truly know just how many fans like or dislike the game. But I believe the majority is tipped towards great dislike amongst gamers and fans. And Nintendo appears to have listened to the majority. Granted it could be a return to square 1 if Sakamoto and Retro are forced to work together. ....hopefully not, for the franchise's sake.

    Things wrong with Other M: -Characterization of Samus -Despite popular belief, dialogue =/= character development. Body language and character actions were used in the past to show a very different Samus, one who had emotions but didn't let them get in the way of the mission. Even in Fusions Samus was more independent, in one case flat-out ignoring orders to progress further. -Gameplay -Exploration and pacing were thrown out the window with Samus constantly running at Mach 5 towards the next GIANT GLOWING YELLOW DOT on the map. Any challenge was removed from combat with auto-aim and insta-dodge -Graphics -The environmental detail that gave each individual room in an area its own personality and fleshed out the world was completely absent from Other M. -Lack of Originality -Remember all the cool new enemies mixed in with a smattering of classics from the Prime games? Well, in Other M all we get are 3D versions of Super Metroid enemies. No new designs. The only original enemies that I can think of off the top of my head are Generic Eyeball Monster, Giraffe Tree, and Gardening Equipment. I could go on but I feel like I'm just beating a dead horse at this point. People who want to think that Other M is in any way a good Metroid game and anything beyond mediocre at best aren't changing their minds any time soon.

    Haters gonna hate. You basically say you don't like anything in this game. Your justification for not liking these things is the same as mine for liking them. We simply like/dislike them. Respect different opinions. Also, some of the complaints are simply invalid. Linear gameplay? Fusion had it as well. Not the first time, not foul. Characterization? This is the first game that characterized Samusin ANY way. Not having characterization in previous games does not equal having the character being the opposite of what Samus's depicted here. You interpreted Samus how you wanted her to be, and when the game makers gave you what Samus actually is, you cry foul. Fuck off with your silly expectations. Also, this story ocurrs after ALL previous games except Fusion, so she's not contradicting any personality you may project on her, since clearly the events of previous games lead to her emotional state on this game.

  • @PacdemonStudios1

    samus88 Read again: dialogue does not equal characterization. In the Prime games they used facial expressions and body language to show her reaction to the events occurring. That is characterization. She was shown to have emotions but be able to put them aside to get the job done. The linearity of the Fusions was acceptable because it was a handheld game that was intended to be played on the go, players wouldn't have time to spend an hour looking for a secret passage. Even then they made it reasonably difficult to find your way to the clearly marked objective due to the inclusion of secret passages. And silly expectations? How is the expectation for the game to at the very least live up to its predecessors and not completely fuck an established character up the ass silly?

  • @samus88

    @samus88

    10 жыл бұрын

    Stop it with the established character bit. There was NO character. NO character whatsoever. Samus was only the name of the sprites you played with on the previous games. You clearly have different standards than me, because the cutscenes/dialogue completely sold her character to me. It's basic storytelling, for sure, no prize winning there, but it was more than enough for me to get into the story. Back to linearity. So you're saying that console games shouldn't be linear? Are you against any linear game or just Metroid games? Then again, different standards. I don't care if it's linear or not. I had no problem with the gameplay.

    samus88 I don't think you fully understand, so I'll tell you again: JUST BECAUSE A CHARACTER DOESN'T SPEAK DOESN'T MEAN THEY DON'T HAVE A PERSONALITY One of the basic elements of storytelling and characterization in a visual medium is to convey character without 2 hours of shitty monologue delivered in a boring monotone in a story that has so many contradictions and plot issues with every Metroid game before and after.

    The fact that Samus is wearing freaking high heals in her suit is more than a little sexist. This game is just awful, not even up to the standards of the other Metroids, especially the Prime games. If you really want to know why fans despise what Team Ninja has done to Samus you would do well to check out TheGamingBritshows video on Other M

  • @osaka35

    It's pretty sexist and disrespectful, surprised you couldn't see it. You seem to just be looking at the surface layer of the story and don't bother to dig any deeper. Which is fine, I guess, for a casual metroid player, but most of the anger is coming from those metroid fans who have a strong respect and knowledge of samus.

  • @filipinowhiteboy

    I hate to break it to you dude, but the game IS sexist. It would make no difference if the roles were reversed. It would still be incredibly misogynistic. Every praise that Samus has for Adam is contradicted by his actions. He is nothing but a contemptible jerk throughout the entire game. Forbidding the use of heavy weaponry is one thing and in the context of the story it makes sense but forbidding the use of Vital safety equipment like the Varia suit? Why? What sense does that make other than to show that Adam is sadistic bastard who wants to see Samus suffer until she is at her limit. He even shoots her in the back for no reason. This just highlights how effed up their relationship is. You know what Adam and Samus's relationship is like? It's like the relationship of the Joker and Harley Quinn except in that series it's properly contextualized for how unhealthy and Eff'd up it is.

    MrMetroid1998 that's not a good enough counter to my argument. Fighting monsters is something she's generally been good at. That isn't something new. Unless you take the break down against Ridley, which yes, does not make sense and does make her character seem pathetic. She doesn't even get to kill him. And before you tell me to read the manga, I already. I loved the manga. It fleshed out her character a lot better than this damn game did (Samus never mentions her Chozo upbringing in the game). It also gave context the Metroid Zero Mission, my personal favorite metroid game and the game where Samus conquered her fears of Ridley (If the manga is supposed to be canon).

    +MrMetroid1998 This game is incredibly sexist. The real hero turns out to be Hey Everybody It's Anthony, the only other female "characters" present are a mother-figure and a daughter-figure, the whole experiment gets fucked up by the two forming an emotional bond, and Adam shoots Samus in the back rather than reason with her in order to sacrifice himself in the most meaningless way possible. Adam is also a sadistic SOB, since he watches Samus burning to death for the entire Pyrosphere section without the damned Varia Suit. And Samus should have died when Ridley deactivated her suit! They were still in the damn Pyrosphere! But, no, we have to see how nimble and flexible she is in midair, so off goes her armor!
