He is selfish to watch his family become impoverished and not return any training to upcoming mathematicians. He became what he hated most, unethical!

Accepting very huge money and awards would also means he's alike to those greedy Chinese mathematicians whose very money and fame motivated. He wants to prove that money means nothing to him to the very end. But he ended up thinking also many other mathematicians in the community are obsessed with the prize, thinking of splitting the million dollars. Yes he did become unethical partially affecting family and friends but he is setting up morals really high. This man deserves no hate, he's a pure genius and yes on his part there is so much unknown about him that people should understand and consider.

Perelman doesn't owe anybody a damn thing. He values his privacy and his independence, and he has every right to. His contributions are greater than what most people will contribute to mankind.

The only way I would disagree with you is 1. His mother who could have used his help with earnings from elsewhere and 2. The non mathematical infighting world, i.e. students who he could have taught with his strict ethical edict and created a counter to that which he hated. I think it was selfish if anything less than mental self preservation.

@@justchaz. totally agree. To say he doesn't owe anybody "a damn thing" would be perfectly fine, but only in the corrupt mathematical world that Perelman himself denounced. If his stance indeed is that mathematics is inherently a moral, just science then he must prove it by guiding younger minds the way his teachers guided him. That'd be the morally just thing to do. Even so, I'd not stretch it to say that it's selfish. But it's not the morally correct thing to do, to retire and shut shop.

@@daisychain8011 We agree. I still stick to my- selfish for any other reason than mental preservation judgment. No matter how many billions of us exist, we are all accountable to each other and a gift like that, requires more of the person. My worldview, I guess.

maciej wrotek aretwo deetwo I don't think knowledge makes people happy. It's the contrary, being dumb makes you happy, since you will have no anguish at all. However about Perelman the case is not so simple as above. He like mathematics as a way of avoiding the anguish of the existence, but he will not practice it, hence he is not happy. Furthermore, I doubt he has ever fucked someone (really, the maximum you can say is that he fucked a hooker or something like this) and he lives with his mother (I don't have time to discuss this point now, but this is a really important point). Anyway, briefly, he don't have a social life, he don't have a way to relieve anguish and he lives with his mother. Exclusion is not an option if you want happiness. I don't have time to discuss the philosophical details today.

aretwo deetwo yes exactly what i saw was a man who wants to live life the way he wants, not how society dictates. its very admirable and what most of us are too cowardly to do. plus he has the leverage, being a genius and all. and he has a moral code...which cant be said for 99% of other humans anyway. respect.

Я восхищаюсь Перельманом. Каждый раз, когда мне тяжело учиться, я вспоминаю, что в стенах моего универа, на матмехе учился этот легендарный человек. Я в миллион раз менее способный в математике человек, из-за чего я постоянно получаю трояки, а иногда и вовсе ухожу на пересдачи, иногда мне кажется что больше я не осилю, не потяну наваливающегося объема новой информации, и каждый раз я вспоминаю этого человека, и понимаю, что это просто позорно сдаваться и болтаться на грани вылета, когда в тех же самых стенах обучались такие гении как Перельман, поэтому я начинаю упорствовать еще сильнее, чтобы хотя бы немного соответствовать и хотя бы на грамм приблизится к этому великому человеку.

Дружище, все дело во вовлеченности. Лишь вовлеченность позволяет нам не просто вести наше дело не просто осмысленно и с радостью, но и успешно. Мы выходим на совершенно иной уровень, на котором вопрос тяжело-легко вообще не стоит. А для этого ответьте сам себе - каковы Ваши дальнейшие планы? Для чего Вы учитесь? В какие разработки, изобретения мы интегрируете Ваши знания? Возможно это будут разработки новых автомобилей или летательных аппаратов , как у Илона Маска, а возможно - разработки каких-либо бытовых приборов, или спортивных , электронных тренажеров. Ответьте. что Вам интересно. начните изобретать уже сейчас - и Ваша математика скаканет на совершенно иной уровень.

Но Соломон-Яков Исидорович Перельман, который написал эту книгу имел сына - Михаила Яковлевича Перельмана (1919-1941), ( выпускник математико-механического факультета ЛГУ (1939), погиб на фронте в 1941 году.). Григорий родился в 1966 году, так что сын Якова Перельмана не мог быть отцом Григория---значит-- Яков Исидорович--- не дед Григория Перельмана.

There is no question that this gentleman is pure genius. He tackled a problem, solved a problem for no other reason than it was there to be solved. He accepted no prize nor money for his contributing efforts but rather said that the prize donors/decision committee was unfair because he felt that another's work was equal to his own. He is truly a great man.

What i have read is that he does not like the mathematical society /people in general . So he does not want to be associated with anything related with that . He just did it because its his life , a person who was born a mathematician .

Странный "вывод"))) Кто такие "они"? Почему "купить"? Есть нарабонтанные методики - "выполнил -получи заслуженное", "заслужил-получи награду". И все привычно следуют этому. Ну, а он - НЕ ВСЕ! Потому и решил задачу /потому, что НЕ такой, как многие/. И подло рассматривать реакцию и решение Перельмана, как желание в ещё большей степени привлечь внимание к себе. Кто так думает - мелкий человечишко. /Хотя и страшно образованный/. Если бы так рьяно и всенародно обсуждалось воровство /столь типичное для рашки/! I hope the future generations remember Grigori Perelman as the person who wrote the papers on Ricci flow which finally provided the solution to Poincare's Conjecture.....and not because he declined the Fields Medal and Millennium Prize. The media had headlines like 'The world's smartest man declined million dollars ! ' And many media personnel made a mockery of his intellect saying that he could've given them the million dollars instead if he so wished to not use it. It's as if they are promoting the proclivity that the only mark of an intellectual is how much money he has (or had in his life) - that's how most people measure success of a human being. I don't expect much from the money-obsessed media & society-at-large but I sincerely wish that at least the mathematics and physics community recognize his ethical standpoint along with his mathematical brilliance.

Благодаря характеру он разгадал и " благодаря " характеру остался в одиночестве. Классика.

Гриша Перельман - рыцарь математики. Идеалист, для которого честь (научная честь) важнее денег, престижа и т.п. Если кто-то считает его больным сумасшедшим, пусть лучше к себе присмотрится. Возможно, что болен именно тот, кто Гришу не понимает. Нравственно болен. Ну а личная польза от Перельмана для меня - лекарство от гордыни. Когда я начинаю чувствовать себя умнее окружающих, я вспоминаю Гришу и понимаю, что интеллектуальная дистанция от меня до дебила меньше, чем от меня до Гриши. На этом гордыня заканчивается, за что Грише большое спасибо.

Einstein's mother - by his own words, due to his constant alienation from her - did not deserve it, but certainly Perelman's mother does. As did Ramanujan's mother, Galois' mother. But in this regard, the Universe arguably knows no matriarchy or patriarchy or patronage, only pure Platonic ideals, only soulmates and friends of impartial, unconditional understanding.

Новых решений, наверное, не будет. Это в XIX веке можно было по несколько серьёзных задач решать. Сейчас математик, решивший задачу такого уровня - уже герой. И скорее всего, на следующую задачу его не хватит. Причём не хватит не по части интеллекта, а воли и духа, которые здорово расходуются в таких делах. Печально то, что наши академические власти не порвались на британский флаг, чтобы уговорить Гришу на преподавание в российском вузе. ОК, он ленинградец и не хочет в Москву. Ну пусть в ИТМО преподаёт. Это тот случай, когда не человека нужно прогибать под систему, а систему выстраивать вокруг человека. Потому что, если Гриша хотя бы десяти студентам передаст свой подход к решению задач, свой способ мышления - это уже будет для страны польза, невыразимая в рублях и долларах.

Чем ? Только тем что открыл эту теорему ,а в остальном ? Мама ,которая ему посвятила всю свою жизнь , здоровье ,живёт в нищете ,а он кроме того чтобы помогать ей ,на старости лет жить достойно , наоборот ,обрёк ее к жалкому существованию и сам тоже так живёт ,да ещё на ее пенсию ! Мог бы взять эти деньги и дать в маме пожить достойно в последние годы ,чтобы она путешествовала ,чтобы она хорошо питалась и ни о чем не думала ,если не хочет о себе думать ,мог бы подумать о своих близких !

As someone who worked in both Russia and America I think this story perfectly summarizes the different perspectives of Russians and Americans. To your average American, everything is measured in dollars. It struck me when I first visited the country is was impossible to have a conversation with anyone without money being mentioned. My experience of Russia contrasted strongly with this. Russian people are far more interested in the higher cultural aspects of life. A striking example is the popularity of classical music, literature ballet and theatre with Russian youth. Sadly for most American youth culture is about what's the latest story from the House of Kardashian.

What you say was true for the Soviet Russians. They had morals and ethics. Modern Russians are WAY invested, money-driven, and interested in wealth/item acquisition than ever before, which is sad.

Clear principles, extraordinary amounts of determination and persistence. I can't imagine spending all of my brain capabilities on one problem for over 5 years. I applaud his perseverance. But this way of working can also drain all of the energy. It is sad that in the end, the press ruined everything by trying to make a huge story out of it, using any possibility. Ignoring moral standards and truths for a quick buck. This greedy behaviour can destroy everything, even in math, a field that is usually so pure and untouchable that it could not be tainted. But I guess the media knows it better. I wish Perelman good luck for the future. A great man, staying true to his principles unlike most others.

The way these idiots talk about him in the end, how he impoverished his mother, how he owed it to the community to go on - I can understand how he is disgusted by such people. They are indeed just scum, despite their compliments towards him. He solved a problem of a magnitude, unimaginable for the tiny minds of such little "men", he advanced mathematics, he didn't indulge in fame and attention, he didn't show greed by accepting a reward, he just wanted to solve this conjecture. In return, he was accused of stealing, he is accused of destroying his family, and is called a weirdo. Just because he progressed science. They are just trash, he is right. Indeed, Gromov is very far from scum, one of the greatests. His point was: he should give somenthing back to the community, perhaps teaching others just like he was taught. Not teaching is somehow "unethical" too. But Perelman retired so that's not possible.

I completely understand you. But it's not that they are talking trash about Perelman. That's just how they feel personally about it that what he overdone and overthinking about the mathematical community. Although i would not agree that he impoverished his mother. There are other ways to earn money, but accepting 1 million dollar and medal would imply that he's as greedy as those Chinese mathematicians which are very fame and money driven. Refusing those would slap those Chinese to their greedy souls. Also yes hes a pure genius and very sensitive that's why the didn't like the idea of them discussing of splitting the credits to the solution and the prize as the idea of some in the community making him more reluctant to them. Even if people think he's unethical at that moment, i think he's setting up morals really high. Mikhail Gromov and other's are not talking trash. They are just being honest and more accurate but of course that's their opinion as Mikhail said that he's high moral standards and persistence gave him lot of force to solve the problem. He also said that Perelman is one of the greatest geometer, and might be the best of all. Other one told that he's a national hero. Those are enough to tell how much they actually respect the man.

Great man Dr. Preleman. Its unfortunate that his deeper sense of selfless service to Mathematics, his humbleness, "down-to-earthness" is sometimes taken as his sense of low selfworth, or that he "underestimates" himself. The audience applauded after every name they heard, so maybe it was just a habit. But if you find this part of the ceremony in another video, you will see that they applauded for a long time for Perelman :)

Applaud is an act of honour, and it doesn't matter if Grigori is seeing/hearing it or not. Do you solve the math problem because of the prize? Do you help others because of the invisible man in the sky is watching you? Do you have to convince people that your proof is correct?

I know modest people like this. It's not about asking him to accept an award, or giving him the choice, he's too modest and stuck in some moral thought. It's just giving it to him, because he should not be living like a bum. He is a hero, not like people who tried to cheat him out of the award, because they wanted the spotlight. I did a little research on this matter and I already can see why this Russian genius mathematician did what he did. We cannot understand or know because we haven’t been in the academic circles he had been in. Whatever he did is right beyond the point we can understand so any judgment would be wrong! Perelman's story is something that sticks around. I've got his arXiv prints on my desk at work - I'll never understand them but I like what they represent - a man's will and determination spanning several years. Andrew Wiles also spent about 7 years working on an infamous problem and managed to make it out the other side. This doesn't seem to be the case with Perelman. I wrote to Perelman some years back with the email he left on his papers, just generally saying hello, no real surprise there was no reply. For Perelman it was very important for people to understand his work as opposed to seeing him as an enigma.

A true hero and a man of principles, though it burdens me to see that his family and himself are not bearing the fruits of his great achievements.
